Summary: Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. What does it mean to be black in corporate America today? How are racial dynamics in organizations changing in a post-Obama era? How do we build inclusive organizations? Inspired by and developed in conjunction with the research and programming for Harvard Business School's 2018 celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the HBS African American Student Union, this groundbreaking book shines new light on these and other timely questions and illuminates the present-day dynamics of race in the workplace. Contributions from top scholars, researchers, and practitioners in leadership, organizational behavior, psychology, sociology, and education test the relevance of long-held assumptions and reconsider the research approaches and interventions needed to understand and advance African Americans in work settings and leadership roles. At a time when there are fewer African American men and women in corporate leadership roles (following a peak in 2002), Race, Work, and Leadership will stimulate new scholarship and dialogue on the organizational and leadership challenges of African Americans and become the indispensable reference for anyone committed to understanding, studying, and acting on the challenges facing leaders who are building inclusive organizations.-- Provided by publisher.

    Cornel West.
Summary: "First published in 1993, on the one-year anniversary of the Los Angeles riots, Race Matters became a national best seller that has gone on to sell more than half a million copies. This classic treatise on race contains Dr. West's most incisive essays on the issues relevant to black Americans, including the crisis in leadership in the Black community, Black conservatism, Black-Jewish relations, myths about Black sexuality, and the legacy of Malcolm X. The insights Dr. West brings to these complex problems remain relevant, provocative, creative, and compassionate. In a new introduction for the twenty-fifth-anniversary edition, Dr. West argues that we are in the midst of a spiritual blackout characterized by imperial decline, racial animosity, and unchecked brutality and terror as seen in Baltimore, Ferguson, and Charlottesville. Calling for a moral and spiritual awakening, Dr. West finds hope in the collective and visionary resistance exemplified by the Movement for Black Lives, Standing Rock, and the Black freedom tradition. Now more than ever, Race Matters is an essential book for all Americans, helping us to build a genuine multiracial democracy in the new millennium."--Amazon.com.

Summary: The role of disaster medicine is becoming more important as the frequency and severity of natural and technological disasters increase. The triple disaster that occurred in Fukushima on March 11, 2011 calls for innovation in the training of health care professionals, pre-hospital emergency care providers, and emergency personnel in the management of the medical consequences of radiation disasters. While many books are available on disaster medicine, none is specifically devoted to the role of physicians in the management of patients exposed to radiation leakage from a damaged nuclear power plant. Radiation Disaster Medicine aims to fill this void based on the response to the Fukushima nuclear accident. Each chapter addresses principles and practices of radiation medicine within the specific context of that accident. Topics covered include the role of physicians in radiation disasters, the concepts of external and internal exposure, prehospital and hospital response, disaster behavioral health, and radiation emergency response from the perspective of national and international institutions. Most of the contributors are active educators and researchers in radiation medicine with first-hand experience in dealing with prehospital triage and management of patients within secondary and tertiary care hospitals in Japan. It is hoped that this book will assist in attaining the ultimate goal of radiation disaster medicine: to help the patients.

    Contents:
Physicians' early response to Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident: Challenges and lessons learned
General considerations in radiation disaster medicine
    Medical perspective
    Pre-hospital emergency medical response
    Hospital emergency medical response
Disaster behavioral health: Psychological effects of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident
Management perspective: Structure of radiation emergency response in Japan

Summary: This book covers every aspect of radiation myelopathy and considers the evidence from all species in which it has been studied. The historical and current understanding of the pathogenesis of this rare but devastating injury is first discussed. The evidence regarding the role of a variety of factors in radiation myelopathy is then reviewed. Readers will find detailed information on the impacts of total radiation dose, radiation volume, dose fractionation, hyper fractionation, age, anatomic level, comorbidities, radiation modifiers, other therapies, and retreatment of the spinal cord. Given the similarity of the pathogenesis of radiation myelopathy in humans and experimental animals, the potential for cross-species modelling of dose response is explored, with attention to relevant species differences. Treatment of the condition is also fully considered. New theories are presented regarding retreatment, small volume response, and the final step in white matter necrosis. The final chapter addresses the medicolegal issues elicited by radiation myelopathy, which is often the result of treatment error. Radiation Myelopathy will be of high value for radiation oncologists, radiation physicists, dosimetrists, biologists, neurologists, medical oncologists, and attorneys.

    Contents:
    History
    Pathogenesis of radiation myelopathy
    Clinical radiation myelopathy
    Radiation myelopathy in stereotactic radiosurgery
    Experimental studies on fractionation effects
    Experimental studies on volume effects
    Other clinical and experimental studies

Summary: This book is a collection of all pertinent information on radiation safety applicable in nuclear medicine and research using radioactive materials. Radiation exposure causes harm to humans and is strictly controlled by several regulatory authorities (NRC, FDA, EPA, DOT, etc). The practice of nuclear medicine involves the use of radioactive materials in patients and research, and is well regulated by these agencies. However, information on radiation safety practice in nuclear medicine and research areas is scattered throughout the literature and federal registers. For busy nuclear technologists and professionals, it is quite time consuming to look for and acquire specific information and instructions to follow in radiation-related occasions and incidents. This guide provides ready-made, handy information on radiation safety as required in the practice of nuclear medicine, presented in a concise form for easy understanding and quick reference related to a given situation and/or incident. This is an ideal reference for nuclear medicine physicians, nuclear medicine technologists, and researchers using radioactive materials.

Summary: This book is a practical guide to the use of modern radiation therapy techniques in women with gynecological cancers. Step-by-step instruction is provided on simulation, contouring, and treatment planning and delivery for cancers of the cervix, endometrium, vagina, and vulva. Beyond external beam radiation delivery, full details are presented on three-dimensional brachytherapy at all sites for which it is applicable. Moreover, in-depth guidance is offered on the various advanced techniques of radiation delivery, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image guidance for external beam and brachytherapy, and stereotactic body radiotherapy. Radiation therapy is a critical component of the multidisciplinary management of gynecological tumors. With modern technology, both external beam radiation and brachytherapy can be delivered in a highly conformal way. This requires precise contouring and accurate planning techniques. Summary: This book presents new information on radiobiology that more clearly refutes the linear no-threshold (LNT) assumption and supports radiation hormesis. Fresh light is cast on the mechanisms of radiation hormesis and the potential benefits of low-dose ionizing radiation in preventing and treating a wide variety of inflammatory and proliferative diseases. It is proposed that these effects may derive from cellular communication via electromagnetic waves directed by DNA, with each cell acting as a quantum computer. Readers will also find close analysis of the negative impacts of radiophobia on many aspects of modern life, including attitudes to imaging technologies, licensing of nuclear power reactors, and preparedness for survival of nuclear war. The book will be of interest to researchers and scientists in radiobiology, radiation protection, health physics, medical physics, and radiology. Specifically, it will provide medical physicians, radiation oncologists, radiation epidemiologists, gerontologists, cell biologists, toxicologists, and nuclear engineers with a wide range of interesting facts and enlightening novel perspectives. -- publisher's website.

Summary: Investigates radiocesium movement in all major components of forest ecosystems, e.g. the plants, animals, insects, microorganisms, and soils, during the initial stage of contamination after the incident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Most of the work was conducted at a common research site. More specifically, the book examines the contribution of surface uptake by trees in the dynamics of radiocesium during the initial contamination stage; the movement of radiocesium in the form of small organic fragments that are essential to the radiocesium dynamics in forest ecosystems; and the upward movement of radiocesium due to microorganism activity, which promotes the effective decontamination of the forest floor. Lastly, it explains why spiders could be a valuable indicator of the contamination level in forest ecosystems.

Summary: Radiofrequency (RF) has been used in many areas of medicine for some time, but only gained popularity in aesthetics in the early 2000s. Although initial procedures provided variable results, the field of RF has grown dramatically. Currently, a multitude of devices which offer an array of technologies, each geared to specific applications, are on the market. In this book, a comprehensive discussion of the evolving area of RF is provided, and the current and cutting-edge technologies which span from noninvasive treatments of facial wrinkles to invasive body contouring procedures are discussed in detail. The methodologies covered include thermal and ablative modalities, volumetric and fractional approaches, as well as practical aspects of application in clinical practice. Included are also pearls on patient management and prevention and treatment of complications. Finally, RF-based procedures are compared with equivalent laser and surgical approaches in a risk-benefit evaluation. Reviewing the standard of care for RF-based treatments and providing information relevant for clinical decision-making and practice management, this publication is a valuable tool for dermatologists, plastic surgeons and all practitioners who use or are contemplating the introduction of RF into practice.

Summary: This book describes the principles and applications of radiofrequency treatments for various spinal indications, including disc herniation, discogenic and radicular pain, facet joint arthropathy, and benign and malignant lesions of the vertebral column. The aim is to provide a handy guide that will acquaint readers with all aspects of radiofrequency neurotomy at different levels of the spine, enabling them to carry out treatments effectively and safely. Radiofrequency neurotomy, or radiofrequency ablation, is a minimally invasive procedure that is associated with a reduction in complications, side effects, and risks of anesthesia as well as with lower costs. This book, written by world-renowned authorities in the field, fills a significant gap in the literature by specifically focusing on the use of radiofrequency for spinal conditions. It will be of value to a range of specialists, including interventional neuroradiologists and radiologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopedists.

Summary: Three years after the publication of the first edition, Radiological Anatomy for FRCR Part 1 remains the best seller in its category based on its faithful representation of the examination. This second edition is designed to reflect the change in exam format introduced in spring 2013. It includes two new chapters as well as some new cases in the remaining chapters and tests. Under the new exam format, candidates will be presented with 100 cases, with a single question per case and a single mark for the correct answer. This book covers all core topics addressed by the exam in a series of tests and includes chapters focussing specifically on paediatric cases and normal anatomical variants. The answers to questions, along with explanations and tips, are supplied at the end of each chapter. Care has been taken throughout to simulate the exam itself. The book aims not to replace the already available literature on radiological anatomy but rather to complement it as a revision guide. It will help candidates to identify the level of anatomical knowledge expected by the Royal College of Radiologists.

Summary: This book provides a state-of-the-art review of the technical and clinical aspects of the vascular interventional radiological (IR) procedures currently employed in obstetrics and gynaecology. A particular focus is on uterine artery embolisation for fibroid disease, which is contrasted with the main alternative uterus-conserving surgical approach of myomectomy, and with ablation therapy. Detailed consideration is also given to the role of embolisation in a variety of other less common conditions, including arteriovenous malformations, post-partum haemorrhage, abnormal placentation and pelvic congestion syndrome. IR procedures are examined from a critical gynaecological perspective and with regard to surgical alternatives. The authors include leading interventional radiologists and gynaecologists from the United Kingdom, Europe and North America. .

Not infrequently, abnormal findings on CT images are functionally silent and therefore difficult for nuclear medicine practitioners to interpret. Furthermore, in general only a low-dose CT scan is produced as part of the combined PET/CT study, and the resulting CT images may prove suboptimal for image interpretation. This atlas is designed to enable nuclear medicine practitioners who routinely read PET/CT scans to recognize the most common CT abnormalities. Slice-by-slice descriptions are provided of anatomical structures as visualized on CT scans obtained in PET/CT studies. The CT findings that may be detected while reviewing PET/CT scans of various body regions and conditions are then illustrated and fully described. The concluding section of the book is devoted to the principal MRI findings in diseases which cannot be evaluated using PETs/CTs.

Summary: This atlas is intended to enable nuclear medicine practitioners who routinely read PET/CT scans to recognize the most common CT abnormalities. Reading PET/CT scans can sometimes be challenging. It is not infrequent, in fact, to encounter abnormal findings in CT images (not related to the neoplastic disease under evaluation) that are functionally silent and therefore difficult to interpret for nuclear medicine practitioners. Frequently, these findings are clinically relevant and should be reported, interpreted and compared to previous scans. This may also have an impact on patient management, since expensive tests like PET/CT are expected to provide the highest level of diagnostic information. Generally, CT images associated with a PET scan are acquired in a low-dose modality, and therefore prove to be sub-optimal for CT image interpretation. Sometimes a comparison with a full-resolution and contrast-enhanced CT atlas may be difficult. Low-dose CT slices are thicker than diagnostic CT and offer less anatomical detail, which can affect accuracy in terms of recognizing both anatomical structures and pathological findings. Today it is becoming increasingly common to acquire a standard PET/CT by combining the administration of contrast media and a diagnostic CT; here, too, basic CT reporting skills are needed in clinical practice. This atlas features a chapter on "normal anatomy" (with and without contrast media) that is based on low-dose and full-dose CT images from PET/CT standard acquisition, and which identifies all the relevant anatomical structures. Other chapters (focusing on the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and musculoskeletal system) present cases with common and uncommon anatomical abnormalities. The addition of new cases with ceCT in this revised second edition rounds out the coverage of PET/CT reporting. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, and oncologists alike.

Summary: The nutcracker phenomenon (NCP) is an accentuated phenomenon of normal subtle compression of the left renal vein (LRV) between the abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery. The nutcracker syndrome (NCS) is a syndrome caused by NCP, resulting in hematuria, proteinuria, or left flank pain. The established diagnostic criterion of NCP is a pressure gradient more than 3 mmHG across the compression site, and NCS has been known to be rare, but probably is not rare and in fact quite common. The most important reason why NCS is known to be rare is that the diagnosis is difficult unless invasive venous catheterization and pressure measurement confirm the pressure gradient. Doppler ultrasound is useful in measuring the flow velocity of LRV. From the velocity measured by Doppler ultrasound, we may estimate the pressure gradient. Doppler ultrasound of LRV needs technical skills and experience. Computed tomography (CT) is a popular imaging technique for patients with hematuria, and we need to be familiar with the findings of the NCP at CT. There are variations of NCP associated with vascular anatomy and posture of the patients. This book will illustrate the concepts of NCP and NCS, findings at Doppler ultrasound and CT, and variations of NCP.

Summary: This atlas explores the latest advances in radionuclide imaging in the field of inflammatory diseases and infections, which now typically includes multimodality fusion imaging (e.g. in SPECT/CT and in PET/CT). In addition to describing the pathophysiologic and molecular mechanisms on which the radionuclide imaging of infection/inflammation is based, the clinical relevance and impact of such procedures are demonstrated in a collection of richly illustrated teaching cases, which describe the most commonly observed scintigraphic patterns, as well as anatomic variants and technical pitfalls. Special emphasis is placed on using tomographic multimodality imaging to increase both the sensitivity and specificity of radionuclide imaging. The aim of the second edition of this book is to update the first (published in 2013) by reflecting the changes in this rapidly evolving field. Particular attention is paid to the latest advances in the radionuclide imaging of infection and inflammation, including the expanding role of hybrid imaging with [18F]FDG PET/CT SPECT/CT, without neglecting new radiotracers proposed for the imaging of infection/inflammation. Written by respected experts in the field, the book will be an invaluable tool for residents in nuclear medicine, as well as for other specialists.

Summary: The main purpose of this book is to create a reference for the indications, contraindications, patient selection, treatment practice, treatment side effect management, and follow-up of radionuclide treatments. Besides standard methods such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy, newly developed biological treatments, targeted treatments, personalized treatments, external beam radiotherapy, and targeted radionuclide treatments have begun to take their place in professional practice. Nuclear medicine, in addition to its role as a tracer of cancer, also assumes the role of treating with radioactive molecules directed to the cancer it traces. These traceable next-generation radionuclide treatments, whose efficacy and reliability have been proven and where diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up are carried out together, are increasingly included in oncology practice together with the new developed radiopharmaceuticals, ensuring a high rate of damage to cancer cells while protecting the surrounding normal tissues. Molecular cancer treatment will become more effective with individualized next-generation traceable radionuclide treatments, which will be shaped by genetic studies in the future. Radionuclide treatments for many cancer types and benign diseases are presented by experienced nuclear medicine experts in the light of their own experience and case studies, while systemic treatments in common cancer types and side effect management of these treatments are summarized by medical oncologists. This book will be of interest to nuclear medicine physicians as well as oncologists.

Summary: This book provides detailed information on therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals and discusses emerging technologies which have potential for broad clinical implementation. Recent advances in molecular biology, radiopharmaceutical chemistry and radioisotope production have stimulated a new era for the use of radiopharmaceuticals for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT). Emerging clinical trials include use of peptides and monoclonal antibodies radiolabeled with therapeutic radionuclides for cancer therapy. In addition, small molecules are used for the treatment of chronic diseases such as metastatic bone pain palliation and radiation synovectomy of inflammatory joints. In the interventional arena, therapy of primary and metastatic liver cancer and arterial restenosis following angioplasty of both the coronary and peripheral arteries are being explored. Reactor and accelerator production of therapeutic radioisotopes is also integrated into these discussions. The development and use of radiopharmaceutical targeting characteristics required for treatment of specific disease processes and how these are implemented for radiopharmaceutical design strategies are also described. Radiopharmaceuticals for Therapy will benefit audiences in nuclear medicine and radionuclide therapy and will thus prove an invaluable source of up-to-date information for students, radiopharmaceutical scientists and professionals working in the radiopharmacy and nuclear medicine specialties.

Summary: This book reviews the current clinical practice of leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) diagnosis and treatment, which is predominately by intrathecal chemotherapy and/or in combination with external beam radiotherapy. LM is a refractory lethal complication of many human malignancies when neoplastic cells grow in the meninges. The use of penetrating emissions from radionuclides has the advantages of visualizing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and ablating meninges at shallow depths and has been used to diagnose CSF flow anomalies and to treat LM. The scientific bases of using radionuclides inside human CSF and ablating LM will be discussed within the text, with results from established and completed clinical trials to explore optimal use of radionuclides to diagnose and treat LM. Many limitations of current practices of treating LM are also discussed, as well as potential avenues of overcoming these limitations. This book is an ideal guide for clinical researchers in the practice of treating leptomeningeal metastasis including radiologists, neurologists, oncologists and radiotherapists as well as their associates.

Summary: This book, in MCQ format, is a comprehensive tool that will help Nuclear Medicine and Radiology residents and attending physicians to understand concepts in nuclear medicine. Questions cover clinical applications of nuclear medicine techniques to the cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, skeletal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and central nervous systems. In addition, topics in physics, radiopharmacy, and radiation safety are addressed. The MCQ format closely resembles that used in board examinations in nuclear medicine. Each question has four possible answers, only one of which is correct. About 60% of the questions are linked to clinical cases, with each case having four questions on average, along with one or two images. The remainder of the questions are free-standing, with or without an image. Answers are concise but are supported by references to the literature when necessary. Pearls in boxes are used to highlight the most important pieces of information. While the questions are scrambled, as in board exams, an index categorizes each question into one of the systems or topics. .

Summary: Medical treatments designed to help people can also be harmful or fatal. Around 2.5 million people die this way each year. So if any kind of medicine makes someone unwell, they or their doctor should report it. Those reports, from nearly every country in the world, go to the Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) in Sweden. As the Centres first director, Professor Ivor Ralph Edwards transformed it from a tiny operation with limited horizons into an internationally acclaimed scientific organization at the heart of the World Health Organizations Programme for International Drug Monitoring. He was then succeeded by his wife, Dr Marie Lindquist. This is the story of how a new science developed and a passionate and dedicated pursuit of worldwide medicines safety, with an unerring focus on the welfare of patients. The pioneering work of Ralph, Marie and their collaborators on every continent protected the lives of millions of people. It may yet improve the lives of billions more.

Summary: This introduction to random walks on infinite graphs gives particular emphasis to graphs with polynomial volume growth. It offers an overview of analytic methods, starting with the connection between random walks and electrical resistance, and then proceeding to study the use of isoperimetric and Poincar inequalities. The book presents rough isometries and looks at the properties of a graph that are stable under these transformations. Applications include the 'type problem': determining whether a graph is transient or recurrent. The final chapters show how geometric properties of the graph can be used to establish heat kernel bounds, that is, bounds on the transition probabilities of the random walk, and it is proved that Gaussian bounds hold for graphs that are roughly isometric to Euclidean space. Aimed at graduate students in mathematics, the book is also useful for researchers as a reference for results that are hard to find elsewhere.

    Contents:
    Random walks and electrical resistance
    Isoperimetric inequalities and applications
    Discrete time heat kernel
    Continuous time random walks
    Heat kernel bounds

Summary: "It is now more than ten years since the first edition of this book was published. In the intervening years, while many things have remained unchanged, there have also been many new developments over the period. This second edition refreshes the first, refining some of the sections to better explain their contents and, at the same time, replacing some examples with more current illustrations. To reflect the changes, we have created new chapters by splitting and then expanding old chapters. Thus, we now include full chapters on data and safety monitoring including interim analyses of accumulating data, cluster designs, repeated measures, and non-inferiority designs as there has been a rapid increase in the use of such trial designs along with some methodological developments and improvements in statistical software available for analysis. In addition, we have included entirely new chapters on stepped wedge designs, genomic targets and, feasibility and pilot studies. The chapter on stepped wedge designs reflects the growing importance of such complex intervention designs while that on genomic targets highlights the research focus directed towards more individualised medicine. In contrast the new chapter concerned with feasibility and pilot studies brings us back to the early planning stages of the clinical trial which is planned. The chapter is included as there is increasing recognition that perhaps a more structured approach is required at the planning stage of any proposed trial. The intention is to help avoid the conduct of clinical trials which fail due to the basic assumptions made at the planning stage being inappropriate. This edition is divided into three sections: I Basic Considerations, II Adaptions of the Basic Design, and III Further Topics. As the title suggests, the first section is intended to cover topics that are relevant to all randomised trials of whatever design and complexity. Thus, it may be the key section for those who are new to clinical trials and an aide-memoire for those more experienced in this area. For this purpose, it concentrates on the parallel two-group controlled trial with a single outcome measure where patients are randomised individually to one of the two interventions concerned. The second section expands on the individually randomised design in several ways by considering paired designs, repeated assessments of the (same) outcome measure over time, more than two interventions, and non-inferiority trials. It also includes cluster trials, and stepped wedge designs in which groups rather than individuals are randomised to the interventions concerned. The final section deals with genomic targets, feasibility and pilot studies, and a final chapter on miscellaneous topics including adaptive designs, large simple trials and very small trials with new additions describing alpha spending functions and the predictive probability test for use in interim analyses"-- Provided by publisher

Summary: Ranunculales is an order of flowering plants belonging to a paraphyletic group known as the basal eudicots. Medicinal plants of this order provide myriad pharmaceutically active components commonly used worldwide in ethnomedicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Interest in plant-based medicinal resources has led to discoveries of many novel compounds in various species, and to investigations on their chemodiversity, biodiversity and pharmacotherapy. Ranunculales Medicinal Plants covers this order of flowering plants comprehensively in this context; detailing the phytochemistry, chemotaxonomy, molecular biology, and phylogeny of selected medicinal plants families and genera, and their relevance to drug efficacy. The book carries out an exhaustive survey of the literature in order to characterize global trends in the application of flexible technologies. The interrelationship between Chinese species and between Chinese and non-Chinese species is inferred, in the text, through molecular phylogeny, based on nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequencing. The title discusses the conflict between chemotaxonomy and molecular phylogeny, in the context of drug discovery and development. It offers invaluable and holistic coverage for the study of Ranunculales as a pharmaceutical resource.

The expert commentary expands on the potential clinical significance of the tracing, provides a differential diagnosis, and, where appropriate, discusses its importance diagnostically, prognostically and the implications for clinical management. The text contains chapters on virtually all the relevant urodynamic findings and clinical conditions seen in practice, including lower urinary tract conditions in both adults and children, neurogenic and non-neurogenic dysfunction, and other commonly seen conditions such as lower urinary tract obstruction, vaginal prolapse, and detrusor overactivity. The material is also presented in a practical manner, with special consideration to the latest national and international guidelines. Written by authorities in the field, Rapid and Practical Interpretation of Urodynamics is a valuable resource that fills a key gap by providing a systematic method of interpretation of urodynamic tracings in an easy to understand textbook that will benefit urologic trainees and experienced urologists alike.

Summary: This book demonstrates the recent advances in rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) for differential diagnosis of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Interstitial lung disease is a group of diffuse parenchymal lung disorders affecting the interstitium, a part of the lung's anatomic structure, causing inflammation, scarring, or excess fluid. ILDs include interstitial pneumonia, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, nonspecific interstitial pneumonitis, cryptogenic organizing pneumonia and sarcoidosis, which are associated with various degrees of morbidity and mortality rates. ROSE has proven its value in diagnosis with routine transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) procedures, especially in difficult clinical cases. The first part of the book discusses the principals of performing ROSE procedures, reviews the basic concepts and summarizes the distribution and morphology of tracheal/ bronchial/ pulmonary cells. The second part covers specific interstitial disorders, including a number of difficult and rare cases, and features iCT images and cytological illustrations. Providing readers with valuable insights, the book is an important resource for practitioners involved in the care and treatment of patients with ILD. This book is part of the 4-volume collection ROSE in Diagnostic Interventional Pulmonology.

Summary: This book offers cutting-edge evidence on using rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) for the diagnosis of neoplastic diseases in pulmonology. ROSE has become an efficient interventional diagnostics tool and important reference for lung disease differentiation, increasing the adequacy rate, diagnostic yield and accuracy of interventional pulmonary procedures. By performing a rapid stain in the bronchoscopy suite, with evaluation by a trained physician, ROSE can be used to ensure the collection of suitable and sufficient material for ancillary studies in an era of caner-targeted therapy. ROSE holds considerable value in terms of evaluating sampling adequacy for further immunohistochemistry testing, microbiology studies, flow cytometry analysis, and molecular assays, providing a preliminary diagnosis for patient care. The first part of the book discusses the key principles for performing ROSE procedures and reviews key anatomical structures in the lung. It also covers typical cellular characteristics on the ROSE scale for pulmonary solid malignancies. The second part of the book features abundant figures and illustrations of ROSE cytopathology in common neoplastic diseases, e.g. adenocarcinoma, squamous-cell carcinoma and small cell lung cancer, while also exploring more unusual types, e.g. pneumonia-type carcinoma of the lung (PTCL), mucinous adenocarcinoma, lung mixed carcinoma, pulmonary metastases from extrapulmonary primary tumors, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), and lymphoma. This book is part of the 4-volume collection ROSE in Diagnostic Interventional Pulmonology.

Summary: This book provides an overview of the use of rapid prototyping in patients with cardiac pathology. With the exponential increase in the use of prototyping, or 3D printing technology, medical applications are becoming more widespread across specialties. Although medical centers are beginning to apply this technology for improved patient care, there is no single text to which specialists can refer for guidance about this emerging modality. The book discusses the use of rapid prototyping in medicine; model creation; image acquisition; rapid prototyping techniques; applications in congenital and structural heart disease; and development and management of a rapid prototyping service. The use of rapid prototyping for pre-procedural planning in patients with cardiac disorders such as septal defects, Tetralogy of Fallot, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and ventricular assist devices and heart transplant significantly enhances visualization of cardiovascular anatomy. Rapid Prototyping in Cardiac Disease is a unique and valuable resource for cardiac imaging specialists, cardiothoracic surgeons, radiologists, and biomedical engineers.

Summary: This book focuses on predictive, preventative and personalised medicine (PPPM) and how it is related to the healthcare of rare diseases. Readers will discover how advanced rare diseases healthcare provides an excellent "proof-of-principles" for the personalisation of healthcare systems on a global scale. Chapters look at national plans for rare disease, at biobanking, gene identification, rare cancers, virus gene therapy, induced pluripotency for cell therapy amongst other topics. There is a chapter dedicated to personalised medicine for hereditary deafness, and another exploring the complexity of genotype-phenotype correlations. Specific diseases such as Fabry's, Gauchers and mitochondrial cytopathies are highlighted and we look at enzyme replacement therapy in lysosomal storage diseases. This work is part of a series, produced with the involvement of the European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalised Medicine. The series focusses on the concept of an integrative medical approach by PPPM. This volume is dedicated to all aspects related to the prediction, prevention and personalised treatments of rare diseases, and in doing so it explores developments relevant to all medical branches. The authors cover ethical considerations, the creation of a robust platform for professional communication, synergies with patient organisations, "doctor-patient" collaboration and a new philosophy of integrative medicine by PPPM. This volume serves as a reference source for scientific and medical centres in the field and can be used both at medical curricula and graduate level in the life sciences. Those who place a special emphasis on healthcare promotion and innovations intended to combat rare diseases, save the affected lives and enhance life quality will all find this book of great value.

Summary: The past decade has witnessed tremendous progress in the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to malignant lymphoma as well as in understanding of the underlying molecular pathogenesis. Optimal treatment strategies are now based not only on accurate diagnosis but also on thorough evaluation of clinical and molecular risk factors. Even more importantly, molecular targeted approaches have been shown to be effective in the treatment of distinct lymphoma subtypes. Against this background, clinical management of especially the rare lymphomas remains a challenge for the general oncologist. This book provides a comprehensive overview of current treatment strategies in these rare lymphoma subtypes. Experts in the field from around the world describe the histomorphology in a clinically relevant manner, consider the role of risk factors in detail, and discuss the spectrum of therapeutic approaches. Special emphasis is placed on the translation of molecular science into clinical care, and a disease-specific algorithm is proposed for each entity. This book will prove an excellent resource for both experienced and inexperienced practitioners.

Summary: "Advances in Cancer Research, volume 153 provides a timely review of the biology, biochemistry, and current approaches to therapeutically target the RAS oncoprotein, the most frequently mutated oncogene family in human cancers. 2021 saw the approval of the first direct RAS inhibitor (sotorasib) for use in treating non-small cell lung cancers harboring KRAS(G12C) mutations. The successful approval and use of this drug highlights that the once "undruggable" RAS is indeed pharmacologically tractable. This volume provides an overview of efforts to develop additional approaches to therapeutically target oncogenic RAS. In addition, the reader will find excellent reviews on the history and research efforts to understand the biochemistry and oncogenic activity of RAS in human cancers."--publisher's web page, viewed February 1, 2022.

Summary: Raspberry is a globally-significant soft fruit crop, with increasing interest to consumers due to its versatility and health-related constituents. In this background context, it is therefore timely to consider the present and future status of the raspberry crop, particularly with the advances in the use of molecular tools and plant phenotyping to improve our understanding of improving crop quality and fruit yields. Since the 1980s a wealth of fundamental genomics and metabolomics resources have been developed for soft fruits including linkage maps, physical maps, QTLs and expression tools. However, a number of serious and emerging challenges exist for the raspberry industry, including the plants' ability to resist major pest and disease burdens and the impact of climate change on crop production, specifically water use and water availability for soft fruit crops. This book aims to address some of these challenges by updating the information known about this important crop, its health value, the major pest and diseases which affect raspberry and approaches for their control, and the speed and precision offered by selective breeding programs by the deployment of molecular tools and linkage maps for germplasm assessment. Understanding the genetic control of commercially and nutritionally important traits and the linkage of these characteristics to molecular markers on chromosomes is the future basis of plant breeding. We will also introduce the opportunity to fast track breeding by improving the speed of phenotypic selection by utilizing imaging sensor technologies, thereby reducing the cost of years of field assessment through developing this knowledge into markers linked to key fruit traits.^The chapters of this book will span the knowledge gained from the collaborations between growers, plant breeders, plant physiologists, soil scientists, geneticists, agronomists and physicists which is essential to achieve progress in improving productivity and a sustainable industry.

Dr. Allan H. Ropper and Brian David Burrell.
Summary: "Tell the doctor where it hurts." It sounds simple enough, unless the problem affects the very organ that produces awareness and generates speech. What is it like to try to heal the body when the mind is under attack? In this book, Dr. Allan Ropper and Brian Burrell take the reader behind the scenes at Harvard Medical School's neurology unit to show how a seasoned diagnostician faces down bizarre, life-altering afflictions. Like Alice in Wonderland, Dr. Ropper inhabits a world where absurdities abound: A figure skater whose body has become a ticking time-bomb. A salesman who drives around and around a traffic rotary, unable to get off. A college quarterback who can't stop calling the same play. A child molester who, after falling on the ice, is left with a brain that is very much dead inside a body that is very much alive. A mother of two young girls, diagnosed with ALS, who has to decide whether a life locked inside her own head is worth living. How does one begin to treat such cases, to counsel people whose lives may be changed forever? How does one train the next generation of clinicians to deal with the moral and medical aspects of brain disease? Dr. Ropper and his colleague answer these questions by taking the reader into a rarified world where lives and minds hang in the balance"-- Provided by publisher.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in almost every human disease phenotype, without much, if any, therapeutic consequence foremost exemplified by the failure of the so-called anti-oxidants. This book is a game changer for the field and many clinical areas such as cardiology and neurology. The term 'oxidative stress' is abandoned and replaced with a systems medicine and network pharmacology-based mechanistic approach to disease. The ROS-related drugs discussed here target either ROS- forming or ROS -modifying enzymes for which there is strong clinical evidence. In addition, ROS targets are included as they jointly participate in causal mechanisms of disease. This approach is transforming the ROS field and represents a breakthrough in redox medicine indicating a path to patient benefit. In the coming years more targets and drugs may be discovered, but the approach will remain the same and this book will thus become, and for many years remain, the leading reference for ROSopathies and their treatment by network pharmacology. Summary: This book highlights the latest advances made in the niche area of Reactive Oxygen Species and Redox processes in plants. It offers a valuable guide for researchers and students alike, providing insights into sensing, detox scavenging, the role in oxidative deterioration, and signaling associated with redox-regulatory processes in plants. The book also dramatically demonstrates how these amazingly resourceful molecular species and radicals are poised at the core of a sophisticated network of signaling pathways, and act as vital regulators of plants cell physiology and cellular responses to the environment. The molecular language associated with ROS-mediated signal transduction, which produces modulations in gene expression that determine plants stress acclamatory performance, is also discussed. The book subsequently provides information on current trends in redox proteomics and genomics, which include efforts to gain a fuller understanding of these redox players role in cellular processes, and to further the application of this knowledge to technology and agriculture. Given its scope and format, the book offers a valuable asset for students of Plant Sciences, Agriculture, and Molecular Biology, as well as readers engaged in research on and teaching ROS Biology.

    Matt McCarthy.
Summary: "This funny, candid memoir about the author's intern year at a New York hospital provides a scorchingly frank look at how doctors are made, taking readers into the critical care unit to see one burgeoning physician's journey from ineptitude to competence. After his professional baseball career failed to launch, Matt McCarthy went to Harvard Medical School and on to a coveted residency slot in New York. But when he almost lost a patient on his first day after making what he believed to be a terrible error, he found himself facing the harsh reality of a new doctor's life--one in which even overachievers find themselves humbled, and in which med school training has little to offer in navigating the emotional rollercoaster of dealing with actual patients. Luckily for McCarthy, his second-year-resident adviser (whom he calls "Baio", owing to a resemblance to a Charles in Charge-era Scott Baio) was an offbeat genius, with a knack for breaking down the complicated process of treating patients. But neither doctor could offer much help to a patient named Barney, who had been living in the hospital while waiting for a new heart, and whom McCarthy slowly befriended over the course of the year in ways that changed his perception of what it means to be a physician. Mixing the tense drama of ER with the screwball humor of Scrubs, McCarthy offers a window on to hospital life that dispenses with sanctimony and self-seriousness while emphasizing the black-comic paradox of becoming a doctor: How do you learn how to save lives in a job where there is no practice? This "One L for doctors" will inspire and entertain physicians and patients alike"-- Provided by publisher.

    Brandon Taylor.
Summary: "A novel of rare emotional power that excavates the social intricacies of a late-summer weekend -- and a lifetime of buried pain. Almost everything about Wallace, an introverted African-American transplant from Alabama, is at odds with the lakeside Midwestern university town where he is working toward a biochem degree. For reasons of self-preservation, Wallace has enforced a wary distance even within his own circle of friends -- some dating each other, some dating women, some feigning straightness. But a series of confrontations with colleagues, and an unexpected encounter with a young straight man, conspire to fracture his defenses, while revealing hidden currents of resentment and desire that threaten the equilibrium of their community"-- Provided by publisher.
