It argues that change is the core of biomarker definition since the body uses its homeostatic mechanisms to correct changes in the blood. This means that urine is probably a better source of biomarkers than blood. A roadmap to the urinary biomarker era is proposed, and researchers are reminded of the potential opportunities and risks in their study design. Kidney diseases are emphasized as they produce the most significant changes in urine. This book tries to show researchers and graduate students, who are in or entering the field, "all things considered" rather than "the current affair".

Thanks to numerous detailed images of urinary sediment constituents, the reader is able to easily compare what they view microscopically with high-resolution photographs and short films. The book is also designed to aid the identification of rare urine constituents in their native state without prior staining. It also features guidance to microscope setup, microscopy techniques, preanalytics. Exercises focused on microscopic analysis and diagnosis and a urinary sediment quiz reinforce key concepts to aid learning. Urine Sediment provides a practically applicable guide to the recognition of urinary sediment constituents. It is therefore a critical resource for trainees and experienced practitioners in urology, nephrology, gynecology and general practice who need to be able to accurately and quickly identify urine sediment constituents.

Overview - DigitalBeverley Anderson.Summary: This book provides a unique insight and background of a uro-oncology nurse's career from a personal and professional perspective, one that encapsulates the ever changing dynamics in the nursing profession over 40 years - 1970-to current, 2022. In writing this book, the objective is to devise a beneficial point of reference, one that is conducive to enlightening individuals within the healthcare profession and the wider context, on the art of reflection and acknowledging its benefits in terms of exploring their feelings and understanding their meaning. Reflection is a highly beneficial tool. In this context, the process enables the author to reflect constructively on her nursing career and practice, to highlight the positive as well as the negative aspects within that practice, and illustrate how the experiences gained have contributed to her development, personally and professionally, throughout that journey. Reflection includes deliberate reflection on experience, emotions, actions and responses and acknowledging how essential these have been to informing the author's existing knowledge base and in ensuring a higher level of learning and understanding. In the continued quest to deliver optimal healthcare, the objective of reflection is in enabling healthcare individuals e.g. nursing students, newly qualified nurses or those considering change of nursing speciality, to better understand their patients from a holistic standpoint (physical, psychological, psycho-social, spiritual, cultural and economic) and ultimately, improving the individual patient'soverall experience--cancer or otherwise, as well as improving and enhancing practice outcomes. The importance of reflection and its contribution to increasing the healthcare professional'sself-awareness--emotional, personal and professional, is also well underlined. Various Modules and Case Studies within the book are used to explain and highlight key issues, and to enhance content and visual acuity.

Individual sections focus on uroflowmetry, multichannel urodynamics, interpretation of pressure/flow tracings, urethral function studies, pelvic floor electromyography, videourodynamics, and urodynamics of the upper urinary tract. Despite recent criticisms, there is general agreement that urodynamic investigation represents a necessary step before any surgical approach to incontinence and obstruction. Nevertheless, recently published guidelines fail to provide specific directions on performance and interpretation of urodynamics, and knowledge of the basic rules and formal urodynamics training are too often lacking. Readers will find that this guide enables them to retrieve key information quickly and to feel more confident in their practice of urodynamics.

In female urology, the main indications for urodynamics are urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, urgency-frequency syndrome (also known as overactive bladder), emptying disorders and painful bladder. By collecting quantitative measurements while reproducing the patient's voiding symptoms where appropriate and possible, urodynamics helps to identify the cause of symptoms, supports management and facilitates prognoses. However, despite the undeniable advantages, the role of urodynamics in female urology is hotly debated. The book starts by describing the physiological background and methodological considerations for urodynamic best practice in the preclinical setting. It then explains how to perform urodynamics correctly - so-called "good urodynamic practice" - to increase the readers' confidence and ability to perform and interpret urodynamic investigations. Lastly, it reviews the advantages and disadvantages of urodynamic testing in each of the key clinical female urology conditions. A separate chapter focuses on the peculiarities of diagnosis and management for female patients with neurogenic bladder. This guide offers a valuable tool for gynecologists, urologists and urogynecologists, as well as a ready source of information for all physicians involved in diagnosing and treating lower urinary tract disorders in women.

It begins with a general review of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the bladder, followed by a discussion of common techniques for evaluating bladder and upper tract function, and the general principles of bladder management in patients with neurogenic bladder disease. Section II narrows the scope of each chapter to focus on specific neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia, and Cerebral Palsy. Each chapter begins with a brief synopsis of the neurologic basis of each disease, followed by its most common urologic manifestations, specific recommendations for urologic care in each disease state, and finally a recommended pathway for integrated long-term care of these patients based on available evidence and expert opinion. The final section of the text reviews the generalized care of patients with advanced disease, including palliative and end of life options, focusing on urologic interventions. Urological Care for Patients with Progressive Neurological Conditions will be an invaluable resource for urologists, neurologists, and all health care providers treating patients with neurological diseases.

Moul, editors.Summary: Urology at a Glance is a concise, practical guide to diagnostic and therapeutic decision making. The book is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the pathway from symptom to diagnosis and covers the full range of symptoms commonly encountered by the urologist. Any particular symptom can be located within a matter of seconds, and in each case differential diagnosis is explained with the aid of a flow chart. The second part of the book is devoted to the pathway from diagnosis to therapy, with each short chapter devoted to a specific diagnosis. Basic information is provided on the disease in question, along with an outline of state of the art treatment options and possible complications. Again, flow charts are used to help the reader to reach the correct therapeutic decision in different circumstances. Numerous high-definition photographs and illustrations, many of them in color, are also included. The editors and authors are leading urological surgeons and oncologists and internationally recognized authorities in their fields. This book will be a great asset in every urologist?s office and will also prove invaluable for practitioners in related disciplines.
- Digitaledited by Maria Rosaria Raspollini, Antonio Lopez-Beltran.Summary: The book covers all relevant topics of uropathology (tumoral and non-tumoral), from the normal histology of the genitourinary tract to pathological findings of diseases in the male genital and urinary tract. To make the content more accessible, all content is arranged alphabetically and each entry is uniformly structured, presenting the epidemiology, the clinical signs, the gross and histological features, the immunohistochemical stainings, and the molecular data for each disease. Histological pictures clarify the microscopic findings and help readers understand the differential diagnosis for genitourinary tract diseases. In addition to internationally respected experts on pathologies of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testis, researchers coming from other disciplines such as molecular biologists, soft tissue pathologists, dermatopathologists, hematopathologists and gynaecopathologists have contributed to this book, thus making it interesting for uropathologists, but also for students, residents, clinicians (surgeons, radiotherapists, oncologists, urologists, dermatologists) and researchers who deal with disciplines that call for knowledge of the pathologies of the male genital and urinary tracts.Digital Access Springer 2020

Diagnosis and medical training. - PrintAbraham Flexner ; with a companion essay by Robbert Dijkgraaf.Summary: A forty-year tightening of funding for scientific research has meant that resources are increasingly directed toward applied or practical outcomes, with the intent of creating products of immediate value. In such a scenario, it makes sense to focus on the most identifiable and urgent problems, right? Actually, it doesn't. In his classic essay "The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge," Abraham Flexner, the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the man who helped bring Albert Einstein to the United States, describes a great paradox of scientific research. The search for answers to deep questions, motivated solely by curiosity and without concern for applications, often leads not only to the greatest scientific discoveries but also to the most revolutionary technological breakthroughs. In short, no quantum mechanics, no computer chips. This brief book includes Flexner's timeless 1939 essay alongside a new companion essay by Robbert Dijkgraaf, the Institute's current director, in which he shows that Flexner's defense of the value of "the unobstructed pursuit of useless knowledge" may be even more relevant today than it was in the early twentieth century. Dijkgraaf describes how basic research has led to major transformations in the past century and explains why it is an essential precondition of innovation and the first step in social and cultural change.

Santin and Esther Oliva, editors.Summary: There are more than 63,000 new cases of uterine and endometrial cancer each year in the United States, up from approximately 41,000 when the first edition of Uterine Cancer was published in 2009. A book focusing on these cancers was timely, with emergent sophistication in diagnosis increasingly impacting clinical decision-making. However, five years later, the need for an updated book on this topic is even stronger as oncologists recognize opportunities to impact the outcome on women that are increasingly diagnosed with these malignancies. Uterine Cancer: Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment, Second Edition, part of the Current Clinical Oncology series, enhances the awareness on this somewhat neglected area of therapeutics, helping to integrate targeted therapies into the management of women with uterine cancer. Written by experts in the field in a highly practical and comprehensive manner, it is a must-have for all gynecological residents and fellows, as well as gynecological oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and family practice doctors who wish to provide their patients with the best possible care.

To date, there have been far-reaching ramifications based on ineffective risk communication when clarifying these health endpoints. A BRCT is a familiar, theatrical chart representation of 1,000 people, with the risks and benefits shown by blackened seats. Since health outcomes can easily be put into such a chart, we show how BRCTs can be used objectively by professionals, the media and lay people. It allows characterization and communication of health benefits and risks of COVID-19 treatment and containment in an undemanding and straightforward way. BRCTs have been successfully used to assist patients in determining: | Their level of acceptable risk of various medical interventions; | If the benefits of intervention outweigh the risks; | Who should make the final decision regarding medical intervention; and Whether the decision is evidence-based. Written by experts in the field, this book fills in a gap in communication between the medical community, the public and patients. It also provides an area of expertise in communication that is beneficial for medical providers and medical students.

v. 1. Differential diagnosis
v. 2. Therapy. - DigitalC. Stephen Foster, Stephen D. Anesi, Peter Y. Chang, editors.Summary: Focusing solely on uveitis care, this quick reference guide will provide a compiled and easy to navigate differential diagnosis - making an often daunting task for clinicians easier, quicker, and more accurate by using a concise outline format to list the most critical aspects of a disease entity. Uveitis: A Quick Guide to Essential Diagnosis opens with a Diagnosis Flowchart, so that the reader can select the most probable diagnoses based on patient's history and exam. From there the reader can then quickly turn to the corresponding chapter to learn about the most critical aspects of the disease entity: epidemiology, characteristic exam and imaging findings, prognostic factors, and treatment options. This book is written for ophthalmic care providers including general ophthalmologists, subspecialists, fellows, residents and optometrists and features research and contributions from institutions that are global leaders in uveitis care.

The morphological expression of the diseases may be characteristic at times, but it is challenging to detect and recognize subtle clinical clues that might indicate towards a particular etiology: infectious, non-infectious or masquerade. Ancillary investigations including fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, auto fluorescence imaging, ultrasound, ultrasound biomicroscopy, laser flaremeter and optical coherence tomography play a crucial role in reaching a specific diagnosis and require proper interpretation in context of each disease variety. In addition, the radiological imaging, systemic work-up and laboratory investigations aid in establishing the diagnosis. This is a first comprehensive atlas that compiles these varied findings in each type of uveitis. It describes all uveitic entities employing the aid of slit lamp and anterior segment photographs, fundus photographs, ancillary investigations where applicable and relevant laboratory and radiologic investigations. The case-based format sets out the context clearly to match the diagnostic findings with the treatment plan. Covered in 136 chapters and more than 1000 images, this atlas is an essential reference guide for all uveitis specialists and general ophthalmologists. Regular updates on new insights, techniques and treatments meet the point-of-need requirements of the busy readers looking for most current information.
