Dissection of anterior and lateral regions of neck
Larynx; laryngeal ventricle and piriform recess of pharynx opened, left anterolateral view
The left half of the thyroid cartilage has been removed with the exception of its superior horn (15) which remains attached to the hyoid bone by the lateral hyothyroid ligament.
- Body hyoid bone
- Epiglottic cartilage (covered by fibrous tissue)
- Remnant of thyroglossal duct (cut off)
- Upper pointer: Middle laryngeal gland Lower pointer: Appendix laryngeal ventricle (opened)
- Upper pointer: Elastic laryngeal membrane (quadrangular membrane) Lower pointer: Stem of epiglottis
- Ventricular fold (ventricle opened)
- Thyroid cartilage
- Thyroarytenoid muscle (a few fibers pass superiorly as the thyroepiglotticus muscle )
- Aberrant fibers of cricoepiglottic muscle
- Lateral cricoarytenoid muscle
- Upper pointer: Area of attachment of deep fibers of cricothyroid muscle Lower pointer: Articular surface of thyroid
- Arch of cricoid cartilage
- Greater horn hyoid bone
- Lateral thyrohyoid ligament (enlargement marks position of triticeal cartilage)
- Superior horn thyroid cartilage (cut across)
- Inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle (reflected posteriorly)
- Tunica of pharyngeal mucosa (external aspect)
- Piriform recess (opened)
- Anastomotic branch superior laryngeal nerve (cut off) with inferior laryngeal nerve
- Prevertebral fascia
- Arytenoid cartilage
- Anterior branch inferior laryngeal nerve
- Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle
- Posterior branch inferior laryngeal nerve
- Inferior laryngeal nerve
