Summary: "This text was developed for the student who will receive instruction in a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program (WOCNEP) specifically the ostomy educational program. The WOCNEP Directors have developed a curriculum blueprint that was approved by the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society TM (WOCN) Accreditation Committee and Board of Directors. The curriculum objectives have been used to develop the content for this book. Each chapter begins with an outline and ends with review questions, answers and rationale that highlight the important issues in each chapter. The text has been written by experts in the field who provide care to patients undergoing ostomy surgery. As the editors, we have supported their work and edited this content to ensure it reflects the curriculum outline and current clinical practice. The information in this book will help the future clinicians of ostomy services to provide a high level of care to their patients. We believe that the person with an ostomy should have the services of an educated nurse specialist and continued access to those services as they live their lives with a fecal and/or urinary diversion. Once educated in ostomy care, the specialty nurse has a unique role to contribute to the care of a person with an ostomy. It is our hope that this book will provide the foundation that helps deliver optimal care to all individuals with fecal and urinary diversions." -- from book preface.
