    Children who are picky eaters often develop feeding difficulties during preschool years. These difficulties may persist into adolescence in some children. The study aim was to examine feeding difficulties and maternal feeding strategies longitudinally from age 5.5-8.5 years in relation to persistent picky eating. Picky eating behaviour in children enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children was assessed using questionnaires between 2 and 5.5 years of age. Feeding behaviours were evaluated using questionnaires between 5.5 and 8.5 years. Data were analysed using adjusted logistic regression models. Of the 7405 children with data on picky eating 1926 (26%) were classified as never picky eaters, 385 (5%) were non-persistent picky eaters and 564 (8%) were persistent picky eaters. At 5.5, 7 and 8.5 years both persistent picky eaters and non-persistent picky eaters were more likely than never picky eaters to indicate difficulties in eating what the mother wanted, deliberately eat insufficiently, refuse to eat what was on offer, be choosy, not over-eat, and be difficult to get into routine, but with the likelihood decreasing with age (e.g. in persistent picky eaters vs non-picky eaters: refused to eat offered food OR 44.2 (95% CI 29.1, 67.0) at 5.5 years, 15.5 (11.5, 20.8) at 7 years and 14.1 (10.7, 18.6) at 8.5 years). The families of children who are picky eaters at the time of entering the school system should be offered reassurance that the feeding difficulties are likely to slowly resolve over time.

    Numerous studies have revealed that cancer patients are more likely to develop severe Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), which can cause mortality, as well as cancer progression and treatment failure. Among these patients who may be particularly vulnerable to severe COVID-19 and COVID-19-associated cancer progression are those with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In this regard, therapeutic approaches must be developed to lower the risk of cancer development, chemo-resistance, tumor recurrence, and death in OSCC patients with COVID-19. It may be helpful to comprehend the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) contributes to these problems. In this line, in this review, we described the potential cellular and molecular mechanisms that SARS-CoV-2 can exert its role and based on them pharmacological targeted therapies were suggested. However, in this study, we encourage more investigations in the future to uncover other cellular and molecular mechanisms of action of SARS-CoV-2 to develop beneficial therapeutic strategies for such patients.

    BACKGROUND: Population-based studies on the associations of long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) with androgen and progesterone are still scant. Residential greenness is benefits health by promoting physical activity, reducing air pollution, and improving mental health, but it remains unclear whether it is related to androgen and progesterone levels among humans.
    AIMS: This study aimed to explore the individual and interactive effects of PM and residential greenness on serum testosterone and progesterone levels among rural Chinese adults.
    METHODS: A total of 6017 subjects were recruited from the baseline of the Henan Rural Cohort Study in 2016. Serum testosterone and progesterone were measured with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Particulate matters (PM) (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) were assessed by machine learning algorithms. Residential greenness was assessed using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) within 500-m, 1000-m, and 3000-m buffers around participants' residences. The effects of air pollutants and residential greenness and their interaction on serum testosterone and progesterone levels were assessed using linear mixed-effects models with township as a random intercept.
    RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, a 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 or PM10 was associated with a 0.037 or 0.030 ng/ml increase in serum testosterone, respectively, in females and with a 0.111 or 0.182 ng/ml decrease in serum progesterone, respectively, in males. A 1 μg/m3 increase in PM1, PM2.5 or PM10 was associated with a 0.222, 0.306, or 0.295 ng/ml decrease in serum progesterone, respectively, among females. Moreover, a 0.1-unit increase in NDVI was associated with a 0.310 ng/ml increase in serum testosterone and a 0.170 ng/ml increased in serum progesterone in males, as well as with a 0.143 ng/ml increase in serum progesterone in females. Interaction effects of PM and residential greenness on serum testosterone and progesterone levels were observed, indicating that the effects of residential greenness on serum testosterone and progesterone were modified by high levels of PM. In addition, physical activity significantly mediated 2.92% of the estimated association between greenness and testosterone levels.
    CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that long-term exposure to PM was positively associated with serum testosterone in males but negatively associated with progesterone levels in both genderssin. In addition, positive associations of residential greenness with serum testosterone and progesterone levels were observed, but they were modified by high levels of PM. Furthermore, the estimated effects of residential greenness on testosterone levels were partly mediated by physical activity.

    Nitric oxide (NO) is an important gaseous signaling molecule in various physiological processes, which functions through interactions with its acceptor molecules located in organelles. NO has an extremely short half-life, making it challenging to experimentally achieve effective NO levels in organelles to study these interactions. Here we developed an organelle-specific, peptide-based NO delivery material that targets the nucleus. NO was attached to the SH group of a cysteine residue inserted into the N-terminus of a cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) conjugated to varying repeats of the nuclear localization signal (NLS), which we denoted NO-CysCPP-NLS, through S-nitrosylation. NO-CysCPP-NLS strongly induced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. This delivery concept can be extended to cells other than stem cells to elucidate the effects of NO release in the nucleus. Furthermore, conjugation of NO to CysCPP fused to mitochondria- or lysosome-targeting signals can be used to deliver NO to other organelles such as mitochondria and lysosomes, respectively.

    Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a series of reactions to allergen mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) and is one of the most common allergic diseases that affects children. Traditional Chinese Medicine, due to its diverse regulatory functions, may offer new strategies for AR therapy. Huanggui Tongqiao Granules (HTG) is a Chinese formula consisting of twelve herbs and has long been prescribed for patients with AR. The aim of this study is to determine the possible targets and action mechanisms of HTG for the AR treatment. SymMap database and TMNP algorithm were employed to show that interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), acting as a molecular link between immunity and neural circuits, is the involved key target. The enrichment of immune and virus-related signaling pathways indicated the neuroimmunomodulatory potential of HTG. Then, AR mouse model was established by ovalbumin (OVA) challenge and was used to verify the therapeutic effects of HTG in vivo. HTG significantly relieved AR symptoms and nasal mucosal inflammation, reduced OVA-specific IgE levels and balanced IFN-gamma/IL-4 ratio. Moreover, transcriptional profile based on clinical data presented that blood cell-specific IFN-gamma co-expressed gene module (BIM) was underexpressed in AR patients, further validating the potential of IFN-gamma as target for AR. Collectively, these findings suggest that HTG could be a promising candidate drug for AR.

    The objective of this study is to provide an assessment of allostatic load (AL) burden among US adults across race/ethnicity, gender, and age groups over a 30-year time period. We analyzed data from 50,671 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) years 1988 through 2018. AL score was defined as the sum total for abnormal measures of the following components: serum albumin, body mass index, serum C - reactive protein, serum creatinine, diastolic blood pressure, glycated hemoglobin, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and serum triglycerides. We performed modified Poisson regression to estimate the adjusted Relative Risks (aRRs) of allostatic load, and generalized linear models to determine adjusted mean differences accounting for NHANES sampling weights. Among US adults aged 18 or older, the prevalence of high AL increased by more than 45% from 1988 to 1991 to 2015-2018, from 33.5% to 48.6%. By the latest period, 2015-2018, Non-Hispanic Black women (aRR: 1.292; 95% CI: 1.290-1.293) and Latina women (aRR: 1.266; 95% CI: 1.265-1.267) had higher risks of AL than non-Hispanic White women. Similar trends were observed among men. Age-adjusted mean AL score among NH-Black and Latinx adults was higher than for NH-Whites of up to a decade older regardless of gender. From 1988 through 2018, Adults aged 40 years old and older had over 2-fold increased risks of high AL when compared to adults 18-29 years old. After 30-years of collective data, racial disparities in allostatic load persist for NH-Black and Latinx adults.

    Based on the osteogenic effect, triiodothyronine (T3) plays an important role in bone growth and development. Autophagy contributes to osteoblast formation and subsequent osteogenesis. Our study aims to explore the relationship among T3, autophagy and osteogenesis. In this study, cranial primary osteoblasts were obtained from 2 to 3 weeks-old Sprague Dawley (SD) rat fetuses. Osteoblasts were treated with T3, and then the autophagic parameters of Osteoblasts (including autophagic proteins, LC3 conversion rate and autophagosome formation) were observed through Western Blotting and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Next, after using autophagic pharmacological inhibitors (3-MA and chloroquine) and silencing vectors of autophagic genes (BECN1, Atg5 and Atg7) to downregulate autophagic activity, osteoblast proliferation and osteoblastic gene expression were detected using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assays, respectively. Ultimately, the mice treated with partial thyroidectomy (PTx mice) were used to further observe the effect of T3 on the formation and autophagy of osteoblasts in trabecular bone in vivo. Our results show that T3 enhances osteoblast autophagy. Autophagy suppression with 3-MA, chloroquine or autophagy-genes knockdown reverses T3-promoted osteoblast formation. In vivo assays showed that the formation and autophagy of osteoblasts in bone tissue were reduced in T3-deficient young mice. Overall, T3 can promote osteoblast formation by activation of autophagy.

    Automatic detection of epileptic seizures can serve as a valuable clinical tool which involves a more objective and computationally efficient method for the analysis of EEG data in order to generate increasingly accurate and reliable results. Automatic seizure detection is also an important component of closed-loop responsive cortical stimulation systems. The goal of this study is to evaluate EEG-based features recently proposed for seizure detection to discover the optimum ones for a reliable seizure detection system. We extracted seizure detection features from intracranial EEG signals that were recorded during invasive pre-surgical epilepsy monitoring of people with drug resistant focal epilepsy at the Epilepsy Center of the University Hospital of Freiburg. Features from time, frequency and phase space domains as well as similarity/dissimilarity features were considered. The performance of each feature was investigated using the statistical test ANOVA. Performance analysis was conducted separately on the recordings from the channels within the seizure-onset zone (SOZ-in) and the recordings from the channels outside the seizure-onset zone (SOZ-out). Similarity/dissimilarity features that measure dynamic properties of the EEG signal and the evolving phenomena of the seizures could significantly separate ictal (during seizure) states from pre-ictal (before seizure) states (p < 0.01). Among them, our proposed feature, Bhattacharyya-based dissimilarity index (BBDI), successfully passed Tukey's post-hoc test as well suggesting that it can distinguish both pre-ictal and post-ictal (after seizure) periods from ictal period. BBDI was further applied to detect epileptic seizures and achieved area under the curve of the receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) equal to 0.96 and 0.94 for SOZ-in and SOZ-out channels, respectively. No significant difference (p = 0.59) was observed in the performance of features between SOZ-in recordings and SOZ-out recordings. The discriminative value of EEG seizure detection features was determined by statistical tests. As a result, the best features to be selected for a reliable seizure detection system designed for people with drug-resistant focal epilepsy were suggested, which include similarity/dissimilarity indices.

    BACKGROUND: Alcohol use among Chinese vocational school students is widespread and associated with many negative consequences. However, alcohol-specific antecedents for this population are understudied.
    OBJECTIVES: The current study explored: (a) which alcohol-specific antecedents are the most salient predictors for alcohol use intentions, (b) whether any mediational relationships exist among these alcohol-specific antecedents, and (c) whether gender-based differences exist among these relationships.
    METHODS: This study analyzed data from 1,230 vocational school adolescents in three Chinese cities. Survey data were analyzed using dominance analysis and structural equation modeling.
    RESULTS: Personal norms were the most salient antecedents for alcohol use intentions, followed by injunctive norms from friends and parents, descriptive norms from friends and classmates, and positive belief about drinking. We observed a statistically significant mediational chain from descriptive norms to injunctive norms, and in turn to personal norms and positive beliefs, and finally to alcohol use intentions. Gender moderated some of the paths.
    CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol use norms and beliefs among Chinese vocational school students have distinct predictive relationships with alcohol use intentions. Alcohol use prevention programs designed for this population need to address normative beliefs (descriptive, injunctive, and personal norms) and the perceived benefit of alcohol use.

    Physical inactivity post-stroke can negatively impact long-term health outcomes and contribute to cardiovascular deconditioning, muscle loss, and increased risk for recurrent stroke. The limited number of interventions designed to improve daily physical activity post-stroke have lacked precision in step goals, are resource intensive, and difficult to scale. The purpose of the Leveraging Insights from Behavioral Economics to Improve Mobility for Adults with Stroke (BE Mobile) trial is to examine the preliminary effectiveness of a novel gamification with social incentives intervention for improving physical activity post-stroke. This trial includes adults who have experienced an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke ≥3 months prior to the time of recruitment who are randomized to a control or gamification arm. All participants receive a Fitbit Inspire 2 wearable device to quantify daily steps and complete a 2-week baseline run-in period followed by an 8-week intervention period. All participants select a daily step goal and the gamification arm is enrolled in a game with loss-framed points and levels to help participants achieve their daily step goal. Participants in the gamification arm also select a support partner who receives weekly updates on their progress in the game. The primary outcome is change in daily steps from baseline during the intervention period. The secondary outcome is difference in the proportion of days participants achieved their daily step goal. Results from this trial will inform future, larger studies that leverage insights from behavioral economics to help improve daily physical activity post-stroke. Trial registration: NCT #04607811.

    As an alternative to a water-based cooling system for a sonoreactor, the present work presents for the first time the use of a phase change material for the management and storage of the dissipated heat within the sonicated water. The performance of the PCM is analyzed as a function of liquid height (LH = 5.1, 10.2, 15.3, and 20.4 cm) at a frequency of 300 kHz and two electric powers (PE = 20 and 60 W). The effective powers dissipated in the irradiated water were determined by the calorimetric technique. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (implemented in ANSYS Fluent® software), was used for the analysis of the combined system (sonoreactor + PCM-thermal unit) at different operating conditions (liquid height and electric power). By analyzing the different outputs (variation of temperature, velocity, enthalpy, liquid fraction of PCM) of the used CFD model, more clarifications are provided about the behaviour of the combined system (sonoreactor + PCM-thermal unit) as function of the liquid height (5.1-20.4 cm) and electric power (20 and 60 W). In terms of temperature, velocity, enthalpy and liquid fraction of the PCM, promising results were obtained in spite of the low thermal conductivity of the employed PCM. The best performance of the combined system (sonoreactor and thermal unit) was obtained at the liquid height of 15.3 cm (corresponding to a water volume of 300 mL) with a similar behaviour (evolution of temperature, velocity, enthalpy, and liquid fraction of the PCM) at both electric powers (i.e., 20 and 60 W) with an intensified response at the PE = 60 W.

    The negative consequences of microplastics pollution on the health of aquatic species have garnered extensive attention. However, the mechanisms through which microplastics may cause harm in the reproductive processes of fish remain unknown. For this study, Cyprinus carpio var. was subjected to four treatments with various concentrations of PVC microplastics for 60 days, through food rationed diets (no plastic control, 10%, 20% and 30%). The gonadosomatic indices, gonad and brain histologies, sex hormone levels, and transcriptional and translational genes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes of both sexes were observed. According to the results, the gonadosomatic indices were significantly decreased, gonadal development was delayed, and the level of estradiol (E2) in the females was significantly elevated. In addition, the expression levels of genes associated with the HPG axis in the brains and gonads (gnrh, gtha1, fshβ, cyp19b, erα, vtg1, dmrt1, sox9b, and cyp19a) and the transcription levels of apoptosis-related genes in the brains and gonads (caspase3, bax, and bcl-2) exhibited significant changes. Further investigation revealed that the translation levels of genes linked to sex differentiation and sex steroid hormone (cyp19b and dmrt1) were significantly altered. These findings indicated that PVC likely microplastics may have a negative impact on the reproductive system of Cyprinus carpio var. by inhibiting gonadal development, affecting the gonad and brain structures, and altering the levels of steroid hormones and the expression of HPG axis-related genes. This work provides new insights into the toxicity of microplastics in aquatic organisms by revealing that PVC microplastics are a potential threat against the reproduction of fish populations.

    Five copper or chromium stress levels were carried out on mulberry leaf, and 20 samples were collected for each metal stress level. A total of 100 samples (copper or chromium) were processed into uniform pressed pellet. The mulberry leaf pellet was placed on a sample platform of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) system. A laser was used to ablate the sample pellet and generate the emission lines, the intensity and delay time of laser ablation were 80 mJ and 4 μs respectively. To reduce the acquisition errors, 16 different positions of each sample were ablated for 5 accumulation. Then, 80 spectra were collected per sample and the average of them was considered as the sample spectrum for subsequent analysis. Finally, a total of 200 spectra of copper and chromium in mulberry leaves with a wavelength range of 219-877 nm were obtained for calibration analysis [1].

    OBJECTIVE: Olfactory dysfunction indicates a higher risk of developing dementia. However, the potential structural and functional changes are still largely unknown.
    METHODS: A total of 236 participants were enrolled, including 45 Alzheimer's disease (AD) individuals and 191dementia-free individuals. Detailed study methods, comprising neuropsychological assessment and olfactory identification test (University of Pennsylvania smell identification test, UPSIT), as well as structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were applied in this research. The dementia-free individuals were divided into two sub-groups based on olfactory score: dementia-free with olfactory dysfunction (DF-OD) sub-group and dementia-free without olfactory dysfunction (DF-NOD) sub-group. The results were analyzed for subsequent intergroup comparisons and correlations. The cognitive assessment was conducted again three years later.
    RESULTS: (i) At dementia-free stage, there was a positive correlation between olfactory score and cognitive function. (ii) In dementia-free group, the volume of crucial brain structures involved in olfactory recognition and processing (such as amygdala, entorhinal cortex and basal forebrain volumes) are positively associated with olfactory score. (iii) Compared to the DF-NOD group, the DF-OD group showed a significant reduction in olfactory network (ON) function. (iv) Compared to DF-NOD group, there were significant functional connectivity (FC) decline between PCun_L(R)_4_1 in the precuneus of posterior default mode network (pDMN) and the salience network (SN) in DF-OD group, and the FC values decreased with falling olfactory scores. Moreover, in DF-OD group, the noteworthy reduction in FC were observed between PCun_L(R)_4_1 and amygdala, which was a crucial component of ON. (v) The AD conversion rate of DF-OD was 29.41%, while the DF-NOD group was 12.50%. The structural and functional changes in the precuneus were also observed in AD and were more severe.
    CONCLUSIONS: In addition to the olfactory circuit, the precuneus is a critical structure in the odor identification process, whose abnormal function underlies the olfactory identification impairment of dementia-free individuals.

    Ascariasis is the most prevalent helminth affecting approximately 819 million people worldwide. The acute phase of Ascariasis is characterized by larval migration of Ascaris spp., through the intestinal wall, carried to the liver and lungs of the host by the circulatory system. Most of the larvae subsequently transverse the lung parenchyma leading to tissue injury, reaching the airways and pharynx, where they can be expectorated and swallowed back to the gastrointestinal tract, where they develop into adult worms. However, some larvae are trapped in the lung parenchyma inciting an inflammatory response that causes persistent pulmonary tissue damage long after the resolution of infection, which returns to tissue homeostasis. However, the mechanism by which chronic lung disease develops and resolves remains unknown. Here, using immunohistochemistry, we demonstrate that small fragments and larval antigens of Ascaris suum are deposited and retained chronically in the lung parenchyma of mice following a single Ascaris infection. Our results reveal that the prolonged presence of Ascaris larval antigens in the lung parenchyma contributes to the persistent immune stimulation inducing histopathological changes observed chronically following infection, and clearly demonstrate that larval antigens are related to all phases of tissue adaptation after infection: lung injury, chronic inflammation, resolution, and tissue remodeling, in parallel to increased specific humoral immunity and the recovery of lung function in mice. Additional insight is needed into the mechanisms of Ascaris antigen to induce chronic immune responses and resolution in the host lungs following larval migration.

    OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between adherence to treatment with sodium channel blockers (SCBs) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), work productivity and activity impairment (WPAI), healthcare resource utilization (HRU), and associated costs among patients with epilepsy.
    METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study used data from the 2017 US National Health and Wellness Survey (NHWS; N = 75,004). Health-related quality of life (Study Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey version 2 [SF-36v2]), WPAI (Work Productivity and Activity Impairment-General Health [WPAI-GH] questionnaire), HRU, and annual costs were compared among respondents with epilepsy using SCBs categorized as low/medium adherence (n = 120) and high adherence (n = 80) using generalized linear models, controlling for patient characteristics.
    RESULTS: Mental component score, Short-Form 6-Dimension (SF-6D) health utility index, bodily pain, mental health, physical functioning, role emotional, social functioning, and vitality scores were significantly lower in low/medium adherence respondents than in high adherence respondents (for all, p < 0.05). Only activity impairment was significantly higher in low/medium adherence respondents compared with the high adherence group (p < 0.001). Healthcare resource utilization did not differ significantly between the two groups; however, the number of emergency room (ER) visits and total costs were lower in the high adherence group (p = 0.038) compared with the low/medium adherence group (p = 0.040).
    CONCLUSION: High adherence to SCBs was associated with improved HRQoL, lower WPAI, and lower HRU and associated costs among patients with epilepsy. Therefore, adherence to SCBs may be an important factor in improving the abovementioned patient-reported outcomes. Findings from this study can help provide further impetus to healthcare policymakers and clinicians for addressing the low antiepileptic drug (AED) adherence levels in adult patients with epilepsy.

    This paper reports a numerical study of the sensitivity and applicability of the Nonlinear Coda Wave Interferometry (NCWI) method in a heterogeneous material with a localized microcracked zone. We model the influence of a strong pump wave on the localized microcracked zone as a small average increase in the length of each crack. Further probing of this microcracked zone with a multiply scattered ultrasonic wave induces small changes to the coda-type signal, which are quantified with coda wave interferometry. A parametric sensitivity study of the CWI observables with respect to the changes in crack length is established via numerical simulations of the problem using a 2D spectral element method (SEM2D). The stretching of the signal, proportional to the relative variation in effective velocity, is found to be linearly proportional to the global change in crack length, while the other CWI parameter, the remnant decorrelation coefficient, is found to be quadratically proportional to the crack length change. The NCWI method is shown to be relevant for the detection of different damaged material states in complex solids. The reported numerical results are especially significant in the context of quantitative nondestructive evaluation of micro-damage level of a heterogeneous materials using nonlinear ultrasound signals.

    In atopic dermatitis (AD), chronic skin inflammation is associated with skin barrier defects and skin microbiome dysbiosis including a lower abundance of Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPACs). We here report that, through secreted soluble factors, GPAC rapidly and directly induced epidermal host-defense molecules in cultured human keratinocytes and indirectly via immune-cell activation and cytokines derived thereof. Host-derived antimicrobial peptides known to limit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus-a skin pathogen involved in AD pathology-were strongly upregulated by GPAC-induced signaling through aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR)-independent mechanisms, with a concomitant AHR-dependent induction of epidermal differentiation genes and control of pro-inflammatory gene expression in organotypic human epidermis. By these modes of operandi, GPAC may act as an "alarm signal" and protect the skin from pathogenic colonization and infection in the event of skin barrier disruption. Fostering growth or survival of GPAC may be starting point for microbiome-targeted therapeutics in AD.

    The COVID-19 disease pandemic spread rapidly worldwide and caused extensive human death and financial losses. Therefore, finding accurate, accessible, and inexpensive methods for diagnosing the disease has challenged researchers. To automate the process of diagnosing COVID-19 disease through images, several strategies based on deep learning, such as transfer learning and ensemble learning, have been presented. However, these techniques cannot deal with noises and their propagation in different layers. In addition, many of the datasets already being used are imbalanced, and most techniques have used binary classification, COVID-19, from normal cases. To address these issues, we use the blind/referenceless image spatial quality evaluator to filter out inappropriate data in the dataset. In order to increase the volume and diversity of the data, we merge two datasets. This combination of two datasets allows multi-class classification between the three states of normal, COVID-19, and types of pneumonia, including bacterial and viral types. A weighted multi-class cross-entropy is used to reduce the effect of data imbalance. In addition, a fuzzy fine-tuned Xception model is applied to reduce the noise propagation in different layers. Quantitative analysis shows that our proposed model achieves 96.60% accuracy on the merged test set, which is more accurate than previously mentioned state-of-the-art methods.
