Intrauterine devices are an effective method of birth control. Their use has resulted in pregnancy in a small number of women. If the device is left in situ after conception occurs, the pregnancy is often associated with infection and bleeding. The device apparently exerts its major effect on the uterus and offers little contraceptive protection to the fallopian tube and ovaries.
