Adiyodi.Summary: This volume, which is part of a series on the reproductive biology of invertebrates, studies the modes of insemination, fertilization, embryonic development and parental care of eggs and young. Nielsen 9780471922698 20160527 About 95% of all known animal species are invertebrates. A knowledge of their sexual, reproductive and developmental biology is essential for the effective management of species that are economically useful or are harmful to crops and livestock. This treatise is part of a multivolume work which covers all aspects of the reproduction and development of invertebrates - terrestrial, marine, freshwater, brackish-water, free-living and parasitic. Nielsen 9780471941187 20160527 Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates Volume IV Fertilization, Development, and Parental Care Edited by K.G. Adiyodi and R.G. Adiyodi About 95 per cent of all known animal species are invertebrates. A knowledge of their sexual, reproductive, and developmental biology is essential for the effective management of species that are economically useful to man or are harmful to him, his crops, and livestock. This treatise is the first to cover all aspects of reproduction and development of the entire spectrum of invertebrates - terrestrial, marine, freshwater, brackish-water, free-living, and parasitic. The chapters, by leading world experts in their fields, are up-to-date and informative, and suggest a number of problems for future research. Fertilization, Development, and Parental Care is the fourth volume in the series. Nielsen 9780471934103 20160527 This book is the first to cover all aspects of reproduction and development of the entire spectrum of invertebrates--terrestrial, marine, freshwater, brackish water, free-living, and parasitic. Nielsen 9780471966487 20160527 About 95 per cent of all known animal species are invertebrates. A knowledge of their sexual, reproductive, and developmental biology is essential. Nielsen 9780471494652 20160528 About 95 per cent of all known animal species are invertebrates. Knowledge of their sexual, reproductive and developmental biology is essential for the effective management of species that are economically useful to man, or are harmful to him, his crops or livestock. This book contains chapters by leading experts in the field. It covers much of the up to date research in an informative and highly useful fashion. It also covers all parts of recent progress in vitellogenisis. Nielsen 9780471489689 20160528 Updates knowledge of the ultrastructure and phylogeny of spermatozoa of the invertebrates. Much new information is included on the sperm of non-chelicerate arthropod groups: the Decapoda, Pentastomida and Myriapoda and also the Lophophorata, and the unequivocally deuterostome groups, Echinodermata, Chordata, Urochordata, and Chephalochordata. It is part of the ninth volume in the series: Progress in Male Gamete Ultrastructure and Phylogeny. Nielsen 9780471999102 20160528 Presenting comprehensive information on the endocrine regulation of reproduction in select invertebrate groups, this volume examines hormones, growth factors, paracines, and autocrites, with chapters on representative acoelomates, pseudocoelomates, and schizocoelomates. Nielsen 9780471968085 20160528 Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates Volume III Accessory Sex Glands Edited by K. G. Adiyodi Accessory Sex Glands is the third volume in the encyclopaedic series and provides very valuable information, some hitherto unpublished, on the distribution, structure, origin physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and evolution of the accessory sex glands in different groups of invertebrates. Volumes I and II of this series (published by Wiley) have given detailed accounts of the structure, origin, composition and physiology of female and male gametes and also provided some information on the mechanisms controlling their production. The secretions of accessory sex glands are indispensable for several key aspects of gamete physiology and for successful fertilization and development in many internally fertilizing invertebrates. Interestingly enough, accessory sex gland secretions are produced, in some species at least, under the influence of gonadotrophic hormones as are the gametes themselves. The data on invertebrate accessory sex glands are scattered in various journals and have not been so far collected, critically evaluated and published in book form. This volume thus fills a void and serves as an indispensable corollary and companion to the two volumes that have already appeared on gametology in the series. Nielsen 9781578082995 20200706Print c1983-<2005> - ArticleGlueck CJ, Mellies MJ, Srivastava L, Knowles HC, Fallat RW, Tsang RC, Wacholder S, Buncher CR.Pediatr Res. 1977 Jan;11(1 Pt 1):13-9.Sixteen children with familial hypertriglyceridemia were studied to determine whether there were any distinctive insulintriglycerid-obesity relationships in pediatric familial hypertriglyceridemia. Eleven of 16 children had calculated fat mass greater than the 97th percentile for age, height, and sex. When compared with 16 normal control subjects matched for degree of obesity immunoreactive insulin and glucose response during oral glucose tolerance was similar for normal and hypertriglyceridemic children. By either simple correlation or multiple regression analysis, plasma, triglycerides did not correlate significantly with measurements of insulin or obesity in hypertriglyceridemic or normal children. Within the limits of a small sample size, and in the presence of obesity, insulin does not appear to play a predominant role in the genesis of hypertriglyceridemia in children with familial hypertriglyceridemia. With a small mean weight loss of 1.8 kg and adherence to a diet with 20% of calories as protein, 40% each as fat and carbohydrate, polyunsaturate to saturate ratio of 1.5:1, mean plasma triglycerides were reduced from 238 to 140 mg/100 ml in the 11 obese children with familial hypertriglyceridemia (P less than 0.02). Speculation In spite of the complicating role of obesity, adolescence, and the small sample size, it is interesting to note that the correlation coefficients between triglyceride and insulin/glucose area (0.36), and insulin area (0.30), although not significant (P less than 0.1), were considerably higher in hypertriglyceridemic children than in normal subjects in whom comparable correlation coefficients were 0.08 and 0.08. This infers that the potential role of insulin in triglyceride metabolism in children with familial hypertriglyceridemia might be discerned with longitudinal follow-up into adulthood.
