- ArticleGhorbani M, Salem S.Chemosphere. 2021 Feb;265:129123.The aim of current investigation was to demonstrate the effectiveness of Degussa P-25 titania in the photocatalytic treatment of sewage, discharged from industrial estate, as a combined process under solar irradiation. The study was aimed to understand the role of fundamental factors including, titania load, initial COD level, and pH on the photocatalytic degradation rate. The commercially produced TiO2 represented a mesoporous structure, 2-30 nm, indicating the adequate activity in the COD reduction of sewages collected from the streams entreating anaerobic, aerobic, and sand filtration stages when 0.5 g L-1 of photocatalyst was loaded. According to the obtained results, the degradation rate is accelerated with an increase in the initial COD level. Although the solar treatment of streams entering to the anaerobic, and aerobic stages indicated the higher rates, the separation of titania particles from the sludge is very difficult. Therefore, it seems that the downstream of recovery network is still the best position to assemble the photocatalytic system, as an auxiliary process to reduce COD below the standard level, and improve the recovery rate. The maximal removal efficiency, 87%, was achieved within 20 min by the solar treatment of sewage in the alkali condition with the control of pH around 8.

Herein, we report a specific bifunctional 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiO2-x nanosheets heterojunction, prepared through a self-assembly approach. Delightfully, the obtained 2D/2D heterojunctions exhibited satisfactory photocatalytic disinfection performance towards Escherichia coli K-12 (E. coli K-12) under visible light irradiation, which was credited to the Z-scheme interfacial heterojunction facilitating the migration of photogenerated carries. The photoactivity enhancement driven by NIR light illumination was ascribed to the cooperative synergy effect of photothermal effect and "hot electrons", engineering efficient charge transfer. Intriguingly, the carboxyl groups emerged on g-C3N4 nanosheets contributed a vital role in establishing the enhanced photocatalytic reaction. Moreover, the disinfection mechanism was systematically described. The cell membrane was destroyed, evidenced by the generation of lipid peroxidation reaction and loss of energy metabolism. Subsequently, the damage of defense enzymes and release of intracellular constituents announced the irreversible death of E. coli K-12. Interestingly enough, considerable microbial community shifts of surface water were observed after visible and NIR light exposure, highlighting the critical feature of disinfection process in shaping microbial communities. The authors believe that this work gives a fresh light on the feasibility of heterostructures-enabled disinfection processes.
- ArticleLi J, Chen Q, Fan Y, Wang F, Meng J.Bioresour Technol. 2023 Aug;381:129123.Two-phase anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technology, but its performance is sensitive to methanogen. In this study, the effect of cobalt (Co) on two-phase AD was investigated and the enhanced mechanism was revealed. Though no obvious effect of Co2+ was observed in acidogenic phase, the activity of methanogens was significantly affected by Co2+ with an optimal Co2+ concentration of 2.0 mg/L. Ethylenediamine-N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) was the most effective for improving Co bioavailability and increasing methane production. The role of Co-EDDS in improving methanogenic phase was also verified by operating three reactors for two months. The Co-EDDS supplement increased the level of Vitamin B12 (VB12) and coenzyme F420, and enriched Methanofollis and Methanosarcina, thereby successfully improving methane production and accelerating reactor recovery from ammonium and acid wastewater treatment. This study provides a promising approach to improve the efficiency and stability of anaerobic digester.
- ArticleZhang S, Xi C, Wang Y, Zhang W, Chen Y.ScientificWorldJournal. 2013;2013:129123.Nowadays, as the Internet services increase faster than ever before, government systems are reinvented as E-government services. Therefore, government procurement sectors have to face challenges brought by the explosion of service information. This paper presents a novel method for E-government procurement (eGP) to search for the optimal procurement scheme (OPS). Item-based collaborative filtering and Bayesian approach are used to evaluate and select the candidate services to get the top-M recommendations such that the involved computation load can be alleviated. A trapezoidal fuzzy number similarity algorithm is applied to support the item-based collaborative filtering and Bayesian approach, since some of the services' attributes can be hardly expressed as certain and static values but only be easily represented as fuzzy values. A prototype system is built and validated with an illustrative example from eGP to confirm the feasibility of our approach.

Despite advances in treatment options including minimally invasive surgery, CT-guided radiation, novel chemotherapeutic regimens, and targeted therapeutics, prognosis remains dismal. Therefore, further molecular analysis of NSCLC is necessary to identify novel molecular targets that impact prognosis and the design of new-targeted therapies. In recent years, tumor "activated/reprogrammed" stromal cells that promote carcinogenesis have emerged as potential therapeutic targets. However, the contribution of stromal cells to NSCLC is poorly understood. Here, we show increased numbers of bone marrow (BM)-derived hematopoietic cells in the tumor parenchyma of NSCLC patients compared with matched adjacent non-neoplastic lung tissue. By sorting specific cellular fractions from lung cancer patients, we compared the transcriptomes of intratumoral myeloid compartments within the tumor bed with their counterparts within adjacent non-neoplastic tissue from NSCLC patients. The RNA sequencing of specific myeloid compartments (immature monocytic myeloid cells and polymorphonuclear neutrophils) identified differentially regulated genes and mRNA isoforms, which were inconspicuous in whole tumor analysis. Genes encoding secreted factors, including osteopontin (OPN), chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 7 (CCL7) and thrombospondin 1 (TSP1) were identified, which enhanced tumorigenic properties of lung cancer cells indicative of their potential as targets for therapy. This study demonstrates that analysis of homogeneous stromal populations isolated directly from fresh clinical specimens can detect important stromal genes of therapeutic value.

However, the excessive use of ammonium-based fertilizers in agriculture has disrupted this cycle, leading to groundwater pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we have demonstrated the inhibitory effects of plant-derived juglone and related 1,4-naphthoquinones on the nitrification process in Nitrosomonas europaea. Notably, the inhibition mechanism is elucidated in which 1,4-naphthoquinones interact with hydroxylamine oxidoreductase, disrupting the electron transfer to cytochrome c554, a physiological electron acceptor. These findings support the notion that phytochemicals can impede nitrification by interfering with the essential electron transfer process in ammonia oxidation. The findings presented in this article offer valuable insights for the development of strategies aimed at the management of nitrification, reduction of fertilizer utilization, and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.

Lead antimalarial candidates are evaluated against clinical isolates to address key concerns regarding efficacy and to confirm that the current, circulating parasites from endemic regions lack resistance against these candidates. While this has largely been performed on ABS parasites, limited data are available on the transmission-blocking efficacy of compounds with multistage activity. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of lead antimalarial candidates against both ABS parasites and late-stage gametocytes side-by-side, against clinical P. falciparum isolates from southern Africa. We additionally correlated drug efficacy to the genetic diversity of the clinical isolates as determined with a panel of well-characterized, genome-spanning microsatellite markers. Our data indicate varying sensitivities of the isolates to key antimalarial candidates, both for ABS parasites and gametocyte stages. While ABS parasites were efficiently killed, irrespective of genetic complexity, antimalarial candidates lost some gametocytocidal efficacy when the gametocytes originated from genetically complex, multiple-clone infections. This suggests a fitness benefit to multiclone isolates to sustain transmission and reduce drug susceptibility. In conclusion, this is the first study to investigate the efficacy of antimalarial candidates on both ABS parasites and gametocytes from P. falciparum clinical isolates where the influence of parasite genetic complexity is highlighted, ultimately aiding the malaria elimination agenda.

Only a handful drugs are available for treatment, and these have limitations, including toxicity and drug resistance. Using the natural product, curcumin, as a starting point, several curcuminoids and related analogs were evaluated against bloodstream forms of T. b. brucei. A particular subset of dibenzylideneacetone (DBA) compounds exhibited potent in vitro antitrypanosomal activity with sub-micromolar EC50 values. A structure-activity relationship study including 26 DBA analogs was initiated, and several compounds exhibited EC50 values as low as 200 nM. Cytotoxicity counter screens in HEK293 cells identified several compounds having selectivity indices above 10. These data suggest that DBAs offer starting points for a new small molecule therapy of HAT.

However, little is known about the molecular mechanism of oridonin biosynthesis leveraging the regulatory network between small RNAs and mRNAs. In this study, the regulatory networks of miRNAs and targets were examined by combining mRNA, miRNA, and degradome. A total of 348 miRNAs, including 287 known miRNAs and 61 novel miRNAs, were identified. Among them, 51 miRNAs were significantly expressed, and 36 miRNAs responded to MeJA. A total of 3066 target genes were associated with 228 miRNAs via degradome sequencing. Multi-omics analysis demonstrated that 27 miRNA-mRNA pairs were speculated to be involved in MeJA regulation, and 36 miRNA-mRNA pairs were hypothesized to be involved in the genotype-dependence of I. rubescens. Furthermore, 151 and 7 miRNA-mRNA modules were likely engaged in oridonin biosynthesis as identified by psRNATarget and degradome sequencing, respectively. Some miRNA-mRNA modules were confirmed via RT-qPCR. Moreover, miRNAs targeting plant hormone signal transduction pathway genes were identified, such as miR156, miR167, miR393, and PC-3p-19822_242. Collectively, our results demonstrate for the first time that miRNAs are identified in I. rubescens, and laid a solid foundation for further research on the molecular mechanism of oridonin biosynthesis mediated by miRNA.
