    Intrinsic cardiac aging increases cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in the elderly. Estrogen helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in women, with 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) activating the autophagy pathway and inhibiting vascular aging, mainly through estrogen receptor alpha (ER α) to prevent atherosclerosis. Abnormal methylation of autophagy-related genes can impact autophagic regulation. We hypothesized that 17β-E2, specifically 17β-E2 α, downregulates the methylation of autophagy factors and delays cardiac aging. Here, we used d-galactose, 17β-E2, and ER α receptor antagonist methyl-piperidino-pyrazole (MPP) to establish different aging models in mice divided into four groups, namely negative control, D.gal, D.gal + 17β-E2, and D.gal + 17β-E2 + MPP groups. Echocardiography showed that compared with the D.gal group group, the D.gal + 17β-E2 showed substantially increased cardiac function. The level of cardiac aging markers in mice in the D.gal + 17β-E2 group was lower than that in mice in the D.gal group. Beclin1, LC3, and Atg5 mRNA and protein expression levels in mice in the D.gal + 17β-E2 group were significantly increased compared with those in the D.gal group. Additionally, Beclin1, LC3, and Atg5 methylation levels were significantly decreased in the D.gal + 17β-E2 group. All the above values of the D.gal + 17β-E2 + MPP group were between those of the D.gal and D.gal + 17β-E2 groups. The expression of Dnmt1, Dnmt2, and Dnmt3A genes was the highest in the D.gal group. In summary, our results suggest that 17β-E2, specifically 17β-E2 α, promotes autophagy by downregulating the methylation of autophagy factors, thereby inhibiting galactose-induced cardiac aging in mice. 17β-E2 may be a potential therapeutic target to mitigate the effects of cardiac aging.

    End-use demand data availability is a catalyst for improving energy efficiency measures and upgrading electricity demand studies. Nevertheless, residential end-use public datasets are limited, and end-use monitoring is costly. The lack of electricity end-use data is even more profound in Latin America, where there are no public end-use datasets as far as the authors are concerned. Hence, we present the Residential Electricity End-use Demand Dataset of Costa Rica (REEDD-CR), containing the results of monitoring 51 Costa Rican households. The data set includes the aggregated and branch circuit measurements for every home with a sample time of 1 min for at least an entire week. The measurements were distributed all around the country. In addition, based on these sub-measurements, REEDD-CR includes a dataset of 197 load signatures composed of seven consumption and demand features for eight high-consuming appliances: refrigerator, stove, dryer, lighting, water heating, air conditioning, microwave, and washing machine. The features included on each load signature are average power, peak power, average daily events, average daily energy, day-use factor, night-use factor, and time of use. The single-appliance measurements used to calculate these load signatures are also part of the dataset. The release of REEDD-CR can serve as a tool for appliance modeling, demand disaggregation testing, feedback for energy demand models, and the overall upgrade of electricity supply and demand simulation studies with realistic and disaggregated data.

    Previous work has shown that dietary flaxseed can significantly reduce cardiac damage from a coronary artery ligation-induced myocardial infarction. However, this model uses healthy animals and the ligation creates the infarct in an artificial manner. The purpose of this study was to determine if dietary flaxseed can protect the hearts of JCR:LA-cp rats, a model of genetic obesity and metabolic syndrome, from naturally occurring myocardial ischemic lesions. Male and female obese rats were randomized into four groups (n = 8 each) to receive, for 12 weeks, either a) control diet (Con), b) control diet supplemented with 10% ground flaxseed (CFlax), c) a high-fat, high sucrose (HFHS) diet, or d) HFHS supplemented with 10% ground flaxseed (HFlax). Male and female JCR:LA-cp lean rats served as genetic controls and received similar dietary interventions. In male obese rats, serum total cholesterol and LDL-C were significantly lower in CFlax compared to Con.  Obese rats on HFHS exhibited increased myocardial ischemic lesions and diastolic dysfunction regardless of sex. HFlax significantly lowered the frequency of cardiac lesions and improved diastolic function in male and female obese rats compared to HFHS. Blood pressures were similar in obese and lean rats. No aortic atherosclerotic lesions were detectable in any group. Collectively, this study shows that a HFHS diet increased myocardial ischemic lesion frequency and abolished the protective effect of female sex on cardiac function. More importantly, the data demonstrates dietary flaxseed protected against the development of small spontaneous cardiac infarcts despite the ingestion of a HFHS diet and the presence of morbid obesity.

    Neuronal synapse formation is critical for brain development and depends on secreted factors from astrocytes. Here, we report that small extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted from primary astrocytes, but not from neurons or C6 glioma cells, greatly enhance spine and synapse formation by primary cortical neurons. A comparative proteomics analysis of small EVs from astrocytes, neurons, and C6 glioma cells identified fibulin-2 as a promising EV cargo to regulate synaptogenesis. Treatment of cortical neurons with recombinant fibulin-2 increased the formation of spines and synapses, similar to the effect of small EVs. In addition, treatment of neurons with fibulin-2 or astrocyte-derived small EVs led to increased phosphorylation of Smad2, an indicator of TGF-β signaling. Finally, the effects of fibulin-2 and astrocyte-derived small EVs on synapse formation were reversed by inhibiting transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling. These data suggest a model in which astrocyte EVs promote synapse formation via fibulin-2-mediated activation of TGF-β signaling.

    Exposure to environmental carcinogens is a significant contributor to cancer development, with genetic and epigenetic alterations playing pivotal roles in the carcinogenic process. However, the interplay between epigenetic regulation and genetic changes in carcinogenesis has yet to receive comprehensive attention. This study investigates the impact of continuous exposure to the tobacco-specific carcinogen 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) on bronchial epithelial cells, leading to malignant transformation. Our findings reveal the down-regulation of the tumor suppressor-like circular RNA circNIPBL during oncogenic processes concomitant with the accumulation of the TP53-H179R, a single nucleotide variant. Diminished circNIPBL expression enhances the proliferative, distant metastatic, and tumor-forming capabilities of NNK-induced cancerous cells and lung cancer cell lines (A549, H1299), while also promoting the accumulation of TP53-H179R during NNK-induced carcinogenesis. Mechanistic investigations demonstrate that circNIPBL interacts with HSP90α to regulate the translocation of AHR into the nucleus, which may be a potential regulatory mechanism for NNK-induced carcinogenesis and TP53-H179R accumulation. This study introduces a novel perspective on the interplay between genetic alterations and epigenetic regulation in chemical carcinogenesis, which provides novel insight into the etiology of cancer.

    Circadian clocks, generating daily rhythms in biological processes, maintain homeostasis in physiology, so clock alterations are considered detrimental. Studies in brain pathology support this by reporting abnormal circadian phenotypes in patients, but restoring the abnormalities by light therapy shows no dramatic effects. Recent studies on glial clocks report the complex effects of altered clocks by showing their beneficial effects on brain repairs. However, how neuronal clocks respond to brain pathology is elusive. This study shows that neuronal BMAL1, a core of circadian clocks, reduces its expression levels in neurodegenerative excitotoxicity. In the dentate gyrus of excitotoxic hippocampal lesions, reduced BMAL1 in granule cells precedes apoptosis. This subsequently reduces BMAL1 levels in neighbor neural stem cells and progenitors in the subgranular zone, enhancing proliferation. This shows the various BMAL1 roles depending on cell types, and its alterations can benefit brain repair. Thus, cell-type-specific BMAL1 targeting is necessary to treat brain pathology.

    When it comes to the treatment of pathologies in which aberrant cell adhesion and extravasation from the bloodstream have been implicated, the selectins represent a central therapeutic target. In this context, the present work investigates the conformational landscape of two prototypes for the design of new antineoplasic and anti-inflammatory agents: the natural selectin ligand sialyl Lewisx and its mimetic GMI-1070. Accordingly, a series of unbiased molecular dynamics simulations at the microsecond scale using GROMOS 53A6 (GLYC), CHARMM36m and GLYCAM06 force fields were employed, together with ConfID, an analytical method for the characterization of conformational populations of small molecules. Our results for sialyl Lewisx are in agreement with and expand upon prior work. As for the mimetic, our results indicate that, in spite of its conformational restriction, GMI-1070's behavior in solution deviates from what had been proposed, highlighting thus some features that could be optimized, as the development of sialyl Lewisx mimetics continues, and new candidates emerge.

    Salmonella is a type of zoonotic bacteria that represents an economic and public health concern worldwide. Difficulties in sample collection from migratory birds mean little is known about their importance as a reservoir of Salmonella. The present study evaluated the prevalence and potential risk of Salmonella enterica in migratory birds. From 2012-2017, 3661 cloacal swabs from migratory birds were collected in South Korea and tested to isolate S. enterica. Strains were tested for antimicrobial resistance and the presence of virulence genes. Thirty-six S. enterica strains, including S. enterica serovar Typhimurium (n = 19), S. Berta (n = 16), and S. Virchow (n = 1), were isolated from 34 birds. Two migratory birds were simultaneously co-infected with two serotypes. S. enterica was isolated from the Mallard duck, Northern pintail, Eurasian wigeon, Spot-billed duck, Eastern great egret, and Intermediate egret. S. Virchow was resistant to ciprofloxacin, with a point mutation (Ser-83-Phe) in the gyrA gene. Ten virulence genes were detected; sixteen strains were positive for all ten virulence genes. Salmonella was isolated from different migratory bird species and geographic locations with up to 100 % similarity of PFGE type. Eight S. Virchow strains taken from migratory birds, poultry farms, and chicken meat showed the same PFGE type. Salmonella was transmitted across species, space, and time in migratory birds. These birds may play a role in the dispersal of pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella and sporadic Salmonella infections in poultry; therefore, they may represent a direct or indirect public health threat.

    Adjustment of key parameters of electrical stunning of pigs is necessary to better respect animal welfare and avoid impairments of meat quality. In the present study, we analysed the effect of genetic line, stunning program and genetic line × stunning program interactions on stunning effectiveness, carcass and meat quality traits in 10,338 pigs from five different genetic lines in a German slaughterhouse using electrical stunning (two-cycle method head/heart current). Genetic line, stunning program and its interaction significantly influenced stunning effectiveness and pH in the semimembranosus muscle. Backup stunning rates ranged from 1.59 to 5.01% in the five genetic lines, and were significantly decreased (2.85%) in program 1 using a current of 1.3 to 1.35 A, 800 Hz and 1 s for the head-cycle compared to program 2 (4.73%) with 1.8 A, 100 Hz and 4.5 s. We suggest to consider genetic line × stunning program interactions when adjusting officially defined stunning parameters for head-heart electrical stunning.

    The cytokine transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) has a role in regulating the normal and pathological response to wound healing, yet how it shifts from a pro-repair to a pro-fibrotic function within the wound environment is still unclear. Using a clinically relevant ex vivo post-cataract surgery model that mimics the lens fibrotic disease posterior capsule opacification (PCO), we investigated the influence of two distinct wound environments on shaping the TGFβ-mediated injury response of CD44+ vimentin-rich leader cells. The substantial fibrotic response of this cell population occurred within a rigid wound environment under the control of endogenous TGFβ. However, TGFβ was dispensable for the role of leader cells in wound healing on the endogenous basement membrane wound environment, where repair occurs in the absence of a major fibrotic outcome. A difference between leader cell function in these distinct environments was their cell surface expression of the latent TGFβ activator, αvβ3 integrin. This receptor is exclusively found on this CD44+ cell population when they localize to the leading edge of the rigid wound environment. Providing exogenous TGFβ to bypass any differences in the ability of the leader cells to sustain activation of TGFβ in different environments revealed their inherent ability to induce pro-fibrotic reactions on the basement membrane wound environment. Furthermore, exposure of the leader cells in the rigid wound environment to TGFβ led to an accelerated fibrotic response including the earlier appearance of pro-collagen + cells, alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA)+ myofibroblasts, and increased fibrotic matrix production. Collectively, these findings show the influence of the local wound environment on the extent and severity of TGFβ-induced fibrotic responses. These findings have important implications for understanding the development of the lens fibrotic disease PCO in response to cataract surgery wounding.

    Proprioceptive accuracy (PAc), i.e., the acuity of perception of the state of different parts of the motor system, shows substantial intraindividual differences, and is often considered a general ability. However, it is questionable whether there is an association between accuracies measured with different tests at different body sites. PAc with respect to both knee and elbow joints (joint position reproduction) and the flexors of the upper arms (weight discrimination) was measured in 87 young healthy individuals with regular physical activity across multiple indices. Expected and perceived performance was also assessed for each behavioral task. Frequentist and Bayesian analysis largely supported the idea that PAc with respect to various parts of the motor system are unrelated. No dominant-subdominant differences for actual performance were found; however, PAc for the dominant and subdominant limb were associated in many cases. Finally, perceived performance was related to expected but not to actual performance for all three proprioceptive modalities. In conclusion, actual accuracy of perception of the actual state of a part (i.e., joint, muscle) of the motor system cannot be generalized to other parts. Perceived accuracy, dominantly shaped by expectations, is independent from actual accuracy.

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between experiencing homelessness and assisting injection drug use (IDU) initiation among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Tijuana, Mexico and Vancouver, Canada.
    METHODS: We used self-reported questionnaire data collected semi-annually on PWID from Tijuana (n = 703) and Vancouver (n = 1551) between 2014 and 2017. Within each setting, the effect of recent (i.e., past six months) homelessness on recent provision of injection initiation assistance (i.e., helping anybody inject for the first time in the past six months) was estimated using inverse-probability-of-treatment (IPT)-weighted estimation of a marginal structural model.
    RESULTS: Across follow-up, the prevalence of recent homelessness at a given visit ranged from 11.6%-16.5% among Tijuana-based participants and 9.4%-18.9% among Vancouver-based participants; the prevalence of recent provision of injection initiation at a given follow-up visit was lower, ranging from 3.3%-5.4% in Tijuana and 2.5%-4.1% in Vancouver. Based on the IPT-weighted estimates, recent homelessness was associated with 66% greater odds among Tijuana-based PWID (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 1.66; 95% CI: 1.01-2.73) and 47% greater odds among Vancouver-based PWID (AOR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.02-2.13) of providing injection initiation assistance over the same six-month period.
    CONCLUSION: We found that recently experiencing homelessness was associated with an increased likelihood of PWID reporting IDU initiation assistance over time in both Tijuana and Vancouver. Addressing homelessness may decrease the initiation of IDU via multiple pathways.

    BACKGROUND: Anatomically and physiologically, there is strong relationship between the brain and body. A new MRI platform covering both the brain and the limb would be beneficial for a more thorough understanding of the brain-body interactions.
    NEW METHOD: A new arm-over-head (AOH) position was developed to collect MRI of the brain and one arm simultaneously. Subject's tolerability and SNR of both the brain and limb under a serial of seven different TR (250-3000 ms) were tested. Then, blocked motor imagery tasks were performed to test the possible brain-body oscillations.
    RESULTS: The new MRI position provided structural images with good quality, and the AOH position had the best SNR under TR 3000 ms (p = 0.03 for the brain; p = 0.064 for the limb). Then, by using both hypothesis-free independent component analysis (ICA) and a priori seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis, it is demonstrated during motionless motor imagery tasks there existed possible brain-body BOLD oscillations connecting especially arm flexors to default mode, vision, and sensorimotor networks. The FC appeared at network density as low as 5%.
    COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS: We have developed a new MRI subject position to explore the possibilities of more extensive neuronal and physiological networks.
    CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary experiment indicate that functional brain networks might extend outside the brain. A bottom-up circulatory effect might explain this phenomenon. Nonetheless, considering the mechanism of neural top-down control and the nature of complex brain networks, the existence of a more extensive whole-body functional network is rational and possible.

    Massive cellular necrosis in acute liver failure (ALF) is dominantly immune mediated and innate immune cells are major pathophysiological determinants in liver damage. In fifty ALF and fifteen healthy, immune cells phenotyping by flow-cytometry, DAMPs using ELISA were analysed and correlated with clinical and biochemical parameters. ALF patients (aged 27 ± 9 yr, 56% males, 78% viral aetiology) showed no difference in neutrophils and classical monocytes, but significantly increased intermediate monocytes (CD14+CD16+) (p < 0.01), decreased non-classical monocytes (CD14-CD16+) and CD3-veCD16+CD56+ NK cells compared to HC. ALF patients who survived, showed higher NK cells (9.28 vs. 5.1%, p < 0.001) among lymphocytes and lower serum lactate levels (6.1 vs. 28, Odds ratio 2.23, CI 1.27-3.94) than non- survivors had higher. Logistic regression model predicted the combination of lactate levels with NK cell percentage at admission for survival. In conclusion, Combination of NK cell frequency among lymphocytes and lactate levels at admission can reliably predict survival of ALF patients.

    Mannose-binding lectin-associated serine protease (MASP) is a type of central serine protease in the complement lectin pathway. In the present study, a MASP-like was identified from the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, defined as CgMASPL-2. The cDNA sequence of CgMASPL-2 was of 3399 bp with an open reading frame of 2757 bp and encoded a polypeptide of 918 amino acids containing three CUB domains, an EGF domain, two IG domains, and a Tryp_SPC domain. In the phylogenetic tree, CgMASPL-2 was firstly clustered with Mytilus californianus McMASP-2-like, and then assigned into the invertebrate branch. CgMASPL-2 shared similar domains with M. californianus McMASP-2-like and Littorina littorea LlMReM1. CgMASPL-2 mRNA was expressed in all the tested tissues with the highest expression in haemolymph. CgMASPL-2 protein was mainly distributed in the cytoplasm of haemocytes. The mRNA expression of CgMASPL-2 increased significantly in haemocytes after Vibrio splendidus stimulation. The recombinant 3 × CUB-EGF domains of CgMASPL-2 displayed binding activities to diverse polysaccharides (lipopolysaccharide, peptidoglycan and mannose) and microbes (Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Pichia pastoris, Vibrio anguillarum, V. splendidus and Escherichia coli). In anti-CgMASPL-2 treated oysters, the mRNA expressions of CgIL17-1 and CgIL17-2 in haemocytes decreased significantly after V. splendidus stimulation. The results indicated that CgMASPL-2 could directly sense microbes and regulate the mRNA expressions of inflammatory factors.

    INTRODUCTION: Youth involved in the justice system have high rates of alcohol and other drug use, but limited treatment engagement. JJ-TRIALS tested implementation activities with community supervision (CS) and behavioral health (BH) agencies to improve screening, identification of substance use service need, referral, and treatment initiation and engagement, guided by the BH Services Cascade and EPIS frameworks. This paper summarizes intervention impacts on referrals to treatment among youth on CS.
    METHODS: This multisite cluster-randomized trial involved 18 matched pairs of sites in 36 counties in seven states randomly assigned to core or enhanced conditions after implementing the core intervention at all sites for six months. Enhanced sites received external facilitation for local change team activities to reduce unmet treatment needs; Core sites were encouraged to form interagency workgroups. The dependent variable was percentage referred to treatment among youth in need (N = 14,012). Two-level Bayesian regression assessed factors predicting referral across all sites and time periods. Generalized linear mixed models using logit transformation tested two hypotheses: (H1) referrals will increase from baseline to the experimental period, (H2) referral increases will be larger in enhanced sites than in core sites.
    RESULTS: Although the intervention significantly increased referral, condition did not significantly predict referral across all time periods. Youth who tested drug positive, had an alcohol/other drug-related or felony charge, were placed in secure detention or assigned more intensive supervision, or who were White were more likely to be referred. H1 (p < .05) and H2 (p < .0001) were both significant in the hypothesized direction. Interaction analyses comparing site pair differences showed that findings were not consistent across sites.
    CONCLUSIONS: The percentage of youth referred to treatment increased compared with baseline overall, and enhanced sites showed larger increases in referrals over time. However, variations in effects suggest that site-level differences were important. Researchers should carry out mixed methods studies to further understand reasons for the inconsistent findings within randomized site pairs, and how to further improve treatment referrals across CS and BH systems. Findings also highlight that even when CS agencies work collaboratively with BH providers to improve referrals, most justice-involved youth who need SU services are not referred.

    Some phthalates are known endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC). They are widely present in the environment thus their impact on children's health is of particular scientific interest. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between phthalate exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes, in particular behavioral, cognitive and psychomotor development, in 250 early school age children from the Polish Mother and Child Cohort (REPRO_PL). Urine samples were collected at the time of children's neurodevelopmental assessment and were analysed for 21 metabolites of 11 parent phthalates. Behavioral and emotional problems were assessed by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) filled in by the mothers. To assess children's cognitive and psychomotor development, Polish adaptation of the Intelligence and Development Scales (IDS) was administered. The examination was performed by trained psychologists. Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) were the two phthalates showing the highest statistically significant associations, with higher total difficulties scores (β = 1.5, 95% CI 0.17; 2.7; β = 1.5, 95% CI 0.25; 2.8, respectively) as well as emotional symptoms and hyperactivity/inattention problems for DnBP (β = 0.46, 95% CI -0.024; 0.94; β = 0.72, 95% CI 0.065; 1.4, respectively), and peer relationships problems for DMP (β = 0.37, 95% CI -0.013; 0.76). In addition, DnBP and DMP have been found to be negatively associated with fluid IQ (β = -0.14, 95% CI -0.29; 0.0041) and crystallized IQ (β = -0.16, 95% CI -0.29; -0.025), respectively. In the case of mathematical skills, three phthalates, namely DMP (β = -0.17, 95% CI -0.31; -0.033), DEP (β = -0.16, 95% CI -0.29; -0.018) and DnBP (β = -0.14, 95% CI -0.28; 0.0012), have also shown statistically significant associations. This study indicates that exposure to some phthalates seems to be associated with adverse effects on behavioral and cognitive development of early school age children. Further action including legislation, educational and interventional activities to protect this vulnerable population is still needed.

    OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of incisional hernias requiring surgical repair after cesarean delivery over a 10-year period.
    METHODS: This population- and register-based cohort study identified all women in Denmark with no history of previous abdominal surgery who had a cesarean delivery between 1991 and 2000. The cohort was followed from their first until 10 years after their last cesarean delivery within the inclusion period or until the first of the following events: hernia repair, death, emigration, abdominal surgery, or cesarean delivery after the inclusion period. For women who had a hernia repair, hospital records regarding the surgery and previous cesarean deliveries were tracked and manually analyzed to validate the relationship between hernia repair and cesarean delivery. Data were analyzed with a competing risk analysis that included each cesarean delivery.
    RESULTS: We identified 57,564 women who had had 68,271 cesarean deliveries during the inclusion period. During follow-up, 134 of these women had a hernia requiring repair. Of these 68 (51% [95% CI 42-60%]) were in a midline incision although the transverse incision was the primary approach at cesarean delivery during the inclusion period. The cumulated incidence of a hernia repair within 10 years after a cesarean delivery was 0.197% (95% CI 0.164-0.234%). The risk of a hernia repair was higher during the first 3 years after a cesarean delivery, with an incidence after 3 years of 0.157% (95% CI 0.127-0.187%).
    CONCLUSIONS: The overall risk of an incisional hernia requiring surgical repair within 10 years after a cesarean delivery was 2 per 1000 deliveries in a population in which the transverse incision was the primary approach at cesarean delivery.

    INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bladder calculi after radical prostatectomy is rare and usually associated with migrated clips into the bladder forming a nidus. We present a patient with multiple bladder calculi resulting from bladder neck stenosis after radical prostatectomy causing bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. He had an associated hypertrophic scar.
    CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man of African ancestry presented with recent onset of irritative urinary symptoms three years after radical prostatectomy. Abdomen pelvic ultrasound and pelvic X-ray revealed a urinary bladder calculus. Examination of the previous radical prostatectomy scar found him to have a hypertrophic scar. He had urethroscopy with bladder neck incision for bladder neck stenosis and cystolithotomy with resolution of the symptoms.
    CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The presentation was that of dysuria and frequency three years after radical prostatectomy. The cause of the symptoms was diagnosed after an abdomen pelvic ultrasound and pelvic X-ray as multiple bladder calculi. This is a rare finding with the few reported cases associated with clips that migrated to the urinary bladder forming a nidus for the calculi. This was of consideration in the case presented, however, the findings at urethroscopy revealed bladder neck stenosis suggesting stasis as possible cause of the bladder calculi. The symptoms resolved after bladder neck incision and cystolithotomy.
    CONCLUSION: In addition to clips forming a nidus for calculi in the urinary bladder after radical prostatectomy, bladder neck stenosis being the cause of urinary bladder calculi should be considered in a patient with hypertrophic scar.
