    Osmanthus fragrans flower flavonoids (OFFF) possess superior antioxidant and antibacterial activities. However, scant information exists on the efficacy of these secondary metabolites as preservatives for fresh-cut fruits and vegetables. Here, OFFF were tested as a natural preservative for the first time in fresh-cut Yuluxiang pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.) to assess effects on fruit quality. OFFF-treated samples showed significant retention of firmness, titratable acid, soluble solid content, and weight. Moreover, OFFF maintained the original fruit color, inhibited the decline of total phenol, reducing power and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging power, and diminished polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase oxidase activities. Furthermore, OFFF treatment effectively inhibited microbial growth. OFFF-treated samples also displayed better sensory quality. Considering cost and effectiveness, the most suitable concentrations of OFFF extract for fresh-cut Yuluxiang pear preservation were 0.7 and 0.9 mg/mL. The results indicate that OFFF treatment may be a potent strategy to inhibit browning and enhance nutritional properties of fresh-cut pear fruit.

    We aim to present a rare case of a missing intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) that was found in the terminal ileum by laparoscopy and was managed initially by laparoscopy and then proceeded to laparotomy. A 29-year-old female who had a copper IUCD inserted by a senior gynecologist presented to the clinic with pelvic pain and discomfort. She underwent laparoscopy for IUCD removal. Intraoperatively, the IUCD was discovered to be embedded in the terminal ileum, and therefore, laparoscopy was converted to an open laparotomy. The patient was readmitted multiple times because of abnormal fluid collection in the pelvic region, which was resolved finally by pigtail insertion. This case sheds a light on the possibility of complications occurring in the medical field even if the practitioner is a senior gynecologist. Furthermore, missed IUCDs require thorough investigation and imaging to make an appropriate management plan to avoid serious complications.

    Many real-world networks display a community structure. We study two random graph models that create a network with similar community structure as a given network. One model preserves the exact community structure of the original network, while the other model only preserves the set of communities and the vertex degrees. These models show that community structure is an important determinant of the behavior of percolation processes on networks, such as information diffusion or virus spreading: the community structure can both enforce as well as inhibit diffusion processes. Our models further show that it is the mesoscopic set of communities that matters. The exact internal structures of communities barely influence the behavior of percolation processes across networks. This insensitivity is likely due to the relative denseness of the communities.

    OBJECTIVES: Increasing and sustaining engagement in HIV care for people living with HIV are critical to both individual therapeutic benefit and epidemic control. Men are less likely to test for HIV compared with women in sub-Saharan African countries, and ultimately have delayed entry to HIV care. Stigma is known to impede such engagement, placing an importance on understanding and addressing stigma to improve HIV testing and care outcomes. This study aimed to assess the gendered differences in the relationship between stigma and HIV testing.
    DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional, household probability survey was implemented between November and December 2016 in the Sofala province of Mozambique.
    PARTICIPANTS: Data were restricted to men and women participants who reported no prior diagnosis of HIV infection (N=2731).
    MEASURES: Measures of sociodemographic characteristics, stigma and past exposure to HIV interventions were included in gender-stratified logistic regression models to estimate the relationship between stigma and recent testing for HIV, as well as to identify other relevant correlates.
    RESULTS: Significantly fewer men (38.3%) than women (47.6%; p<0.001) had recently tested for HIV. Men who reported previous engagement in community group discussions about HIV had an increased odds of testing in the past 12 months compared to those who had not participated (adjusted OR (aOR)=1.92; 95% CI 1.51 to 2.44). Concerns about stigma were not a commonly reported barrier to HIV testing; however, men who expressed anticipated individual HIV stigma had a 35% lower odds of recent HIV testing (aOR=0.65; 95% CI 0.44 to 0.96). This association was not observed among women.
    CONCLUSIONS: Men have lower uptake of HIV testing in Mozambique when compared to women. Even amidst the beneficial effects of HIV messaging, individual stigma is negatively associated with recent HIV testing among men. Intervention efforts that target the unique challenges and needs of men are essential in promoting men's engagement into the HIV care continuum in sub-Saharan Africa.

    It is expected that a low-toxicity natural compound like Kampo formulas would exhibit a preventive effect on COVID-19, in a global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although the biological properties and safety of the representative Kampo, Hochuekkito (HET), and Kakkonto (KKT) have been confirmed in various animal model experiments and clinical studies, and in a few human studies to induce biological effects on various infectious diseases without significant toxicity, it is unclear whether HET and KKT are safe and effective for COVID-19 prevention. We summarized the clinical characteristics of HCWs and the preventive effects of HET and KKT. We performed a retrospective, single-center, cohort study that included 175 HCWs (aged 21-77 years) from a total number of 217 in a hospital with a history of COVID-19 cluster infection. In total, 175 HCWs were tested for severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies. We identified 27 patients (median age: 49 ± 10.7 years) who were diagnosed with COVID-19. The patients in the group that had a body mass index ≥ 25 had a high COVID-19 infection risk, while those in the group with a Kampo formula adherence rate ≥ 40% had a low COVID-19 risk. Patients in the group with an adherence rate ≥ 40%, as well as those in the current alcohol consumption group, were at a low risk of developing severe COVID-19. In conclusion, HET and KKT may have prevented the onset or worsening of COVID-19, which could be clinically used. Obesity might have increased the patients' susceptibility to COVID-19 and the disease severity.

    Missense mutations in the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene can cause familial Alzheimer disease. It is thought that APP and APP-like proteins (APLPs) may play a role in adhesion and signal transduction because their ectodomains interact with components of the extracellular matrix. Heparin binding induces dimerization of APP and APLPs. To help explain how these proteins interact with heparin, we have determined the crystal structure of the E2 domain of APLP1 in complex with sucrose octasulfate (SOS). A total of three SOS molecules are bound to the E2 dimer. Two SOSs are bound inside a narrow intersubdomain groove, and the third SOS is bound near the two-fold axis of the protein. Mutational analyses show that most residues interacting with SOS also contribute to heparin binding, although in varying degrees; a deep pocket, defined by His-376, Lys-422, and Arg-429, and an interfacial site between Lys-314 and its symmetry mate are most important in the binding of the negatively charged polysaccharide. Comparison with a lower resolution APP structure shows that all key heparin binding residues are conserved and identically positioned, suggesting that APLP1 and APP may bind heparin similarly. In transfected HEK-293 cells, mutating residues responsible for heparin binding causes little change in the proteolysis of APP by the secretases. However, mutating a pair of conserved basic residues (equivalent to Arg-414 and Arg-415 of APLP1) immediately adjacent to the heparin binding site affects both the maturation and the processing of APP.

    Lovastatin, a potent inhibitor of mevalonate synthesis, can readily induce apoptosis in a subset of human tumor types including head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). We recently identified activation of transcription factor (ATF) 4 as a lovastatin induced gene in HNSCC cells. ATF4 plays a significant role in regulating cellular responses to a wide variety of stress inducers known as the integrated stress response (ISR). These cell stresses lead to the phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 2alpha shutting down global protein translation. However, the translation of ATF4 is enhanced. In this study, lovastatin treatment induced eIF2alpha phosphorylation and inhibited global protein translation. ATF4 expression was induced followed by increased ATF3 and CHOP expression, targets of ATF4 activity, in SCC25 HNSCC cells. In CHOP(-/-) murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), lovastatin-induced apoptosis was attenuated indicating a role for CHOP in this response. Furthermore, the eIF2alpha kinase GCN2 mediates lovastatin induction of ATF4 and lovastatin-induced apoptosis was also attenuated in GCN2(-/-) MEFs. The pro-drug version of lovastatin has potential proteasome inhibitory activity and recently a variety of well established proteasome inhibitors were shown to activate the ISR. In this study, neither the pro-drug nor the active forms of lovastatin had any significant effect on proteasome activity. Therefore, lovastatin, by targeting mevalonate synthesis, is a potent inducer of the ISR through a novel and as yet unrecognized mechanism.

    Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that leads to red blood cell (RBC) sickling, hemolysis and the upregulation of adhesion molecules on sickle RBCs. Chronic hemolysis in SCD results in a hyper-inflammatory state characterized by activation of circulating leukocytes, platelets and endothelial cells even in the absence of a crisis. A crisis in SCD is often triggered by an inflammatory stimulus and can lead to the acute chest syndrome (ACS), which is a type of lung injury and a leading cause of mortality among SCD patients. Although it is believed that pulmonary vaso-occlusion could be the phenomenon contributing to the development of ACS, the role of vaso-occlusion in ACS remains elusive. Intravital imaging of the cremaster microcirculation in SCD mice has been instrumental in establishing the role of neutrophil-RBC-endothelium interactions in systemic vaso-occlusion; however, such studies, although warranted, have never been done in the pulmonary microcirculation of SCD mice. Here, we show that two-photon excitation fluorescence microscopy can be used to perform quantitative analysis of neutrophil and RBC trafficking in the pulmonary microcirculation of SCD mice. We provide the experimental approach that enables microscopic observations under physiological conditions and use it to show that RBC and neutrophil trafficking is comparable in SCD and control mice in the absence of an inflammatory stimulus. The intravital imaging scheme proposed in this study can be useful in elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanism of pulmonary vaso-occlusion in SCD mice following an inflammatory stimulus.

    BACKGROUND: The ongoing coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) pandemic strained medical systems worldwide. We report on the impact on pediatric oncology care in Latin American (LATAM) during its first year.
    METHOD: Four cross-sectional surveys were electronically distributed among pediatric onco-hematologists in April/June/October 2020, and April/2021 through the Latin American Society of Pediatric Oncology (SLAOP) email list and St Jude Global regional partners.
    RESULTS: Four hundred fifty-three pediatric onco-hematologists from 20 countries responded to the first survey, with subsequent surveys response rates above 85%. More than 95% of participants reported that treatment continued without interruption for new and active ongoing patients, though with disruptions in treatment availability. During the first three surveys, respondents reported suspensions of outpatient procedures (54.2%), a decrease in oncologic surgeries (43.6%), radiotherapy (28.4%), stem cell transplants (SCT) (69.3%), and surveillance consultations (81.2%). Logistic regression analysis showed that at the beginning of the first wave, participants from countries with healthcare expenditure below 7% were more likely to report a decrease in outpatient procedures (odds ratio [OR]: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.19-2.8), surgeries (OR: 3, 95% CI: 1.9-4.6) and radiotherapy (OR: 6, 95% CI: 3.5-10.4). Suspension of surveillance consultations was higher in countries with COVID-19 case fatality rates above 2% (OR: 3, 95% CI: 1.4-6.2) and SCT suspensions in countries with COVID-19 incidence rate above 100 cases per 100,000 (OR: 3.48, 95% CI: 1.6-7.45). Paradoxically, at the beginning of the second wave with COVID-19 cases rising exponentially, most participants reported improvements in cancer services availability.
    CONCLUSION: Our data show the medium-term collateral effects of the pandemic on pediatric oncology care in LATAM, which might help delineate oncology care delivery amid current and future challenges posed by the pandemic.

    Multilayer beamsplitter polarizers have been developed for improved solar polarimetry at key spectral lines. The advantage of beamsplitter polarizers is that a single device separates s from p polarization; this helps minimize attenuation and enables a more compact and lighter polarimeter, which is important for space instruments. Polarizers based on Al/AlF3 multilayers were prepared for both C IV (155 nm) and Mg II (280 nm) lines, and based on Al/MgF2 multilayers for H Lyman α line (121.6 nm). Polarizers were designed to mainly reflect (transmit) s (p) polarization. Beamsplitter performance and throughput are shown to compare advantageously with polarizers in the literature. Beamsplitter polarizers kept a valuable performance after several years of ageing.

    The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of fungal chitosan-polystyrene-Co-nanocomposites (FCPNC) as a material for the adsorptive removal of cadmium (Cd) ions from aqueous solutions. The synthesis and characterization of FCPNC were accomplished using various analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The effectiveness of this adsorbent in removing Cd(ii) species from solution matrices was systematically investigated, resulting in the achievement of a maximum adsorption capacity of approximately 112.36 mg g-1. This high adsorption capacity was detected using the following operational parameters: solution pH equals 5.0, 60 min as a contact time between the adsorbent and Cd(ii) solution, Cd initial concentration of 50 ppm, adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g L-1 and room temperature. The process of cadmium adsorption by FCPNC was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that a chemical reaction occurs on the biosorbent surface. Kinetic studies have demonstrated that the cadmium removal process aligns well with the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic analysis revealed the following values: ΔH° = 25.89 kJ mol-1, ΔG° = -21.58 kJ mol-1, and ΔS° = 159.30 J mol-1 K-1. These values indicate that the sorption process is endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible. These findings suggest the potential of FCPNC as an exceptionally effective biosorbent for the removal of water contaminants.

    Persons with severe mental illness (SMI) engage in risky sexual behaviours and have high prevalence of HIV in high-income countries. Little is known about sexual behaviours and HIV risk among persons with SMI in sub-Saharan Africa. In this qualitative study we explored how SMI may influence sexual risk behaviours and sexual health risks in Uganda. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 7 male and 13 female psychiatric patients aged 18-49 years. Participants were interviewed in hospital when clinically stable and capable of giving informed consent. Interview transcripts were analysed using manifest content analysis, generating the categories: (1) casual sex during illness episodes, (2) rape by non-partners, (3) exploitation by partners, (4) non-monogamous partners, and (5) sexual inactivity. Our findings suggest that SMI exacerbated sexual vulnerability in the women interviewed, by contributing to casual sex, to exploitative and non-monogamous sexual relationships, and to sexual assault by non-partners. No link could be established between SMI and increased sexual risk behaviours in the men interviewed, due to a small sample of men, and given that men's accounts showed little variability. Our findings also suggest that SMI caused sexual inactivity due to decreased sexual desire, and in men, due to difficulties forming an intimate relationship. Overall, our study highlights how SMI and gender inequality can contribute to the shaping of sexual risk behaviours and sexual health risks, including HIV risk, among persons with SMI in this Ugandan setting.

    The heterodimeric Elongin BC complex has been shown to interact in vitro and in mammalian cells with a conserved BC-box motif found in a growing number of proteins including RNA polymerase II elongation factor Elongin A, SOCS-box proteins, and the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor protein. Recently, the VHL-Elongin BC complex was found to interact with a module composed of Cullin family member Cul2 and RING-H2 finger protein Rbx1 to reconstitute a novel E3 ubiquitin ligase that activates ubiquitylation by the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes Ubc5 and Cdc34. In the context of the VHL ubiquitin ligase, Elongin BC functions as an adaptor that links the VHL protein to the Cul2/Rbx1 module, raising the possibility that the Elongin BC complex could function as an integral component of a larger family of E3 ubiquitin ligases by linking alternative BC-box proteins to Cullin/Rbx1 modules. In this report, we describe identification and purification from rat liver of a novel leucine-rich repeat-containing BC-box protein, MUF1, which we demonstrate is capable of assembling with a Cullin/Rbx1 module containing the Cullin family member Cul5 to reconstitute ubiquitin ligase activity. In addition, we show that the additional BC-box proteins Elongin A, SOCS1, and WSB1 are also capable of assembling with the Cul5/Rbx1 module to reconstitute potential ubiquitin ligases. Taken together, our findings identify MUF1 as a new member of the BC-box family of proteins, and they predict the existence of a larger family of Elongin BC-based E3 ubiquitin ligases.

    BACKGROUND: Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of website and web application usage data. While common in the e-commerce arena, web analytics is underutilized in graduate medical education (GME).
    OBJECTIVE: The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Department of Surgery website was revamped with input from in-house surgeons in August 2017. This study investigated the use of web analytics to gauge the impact of our department's website redesign project.
    METHODS: Google Analytics software was used to measure website performance before and after implementation of the new website. Eight-month matched periods were compared. Factors tracked included total users, new users, total sessions, sessions per user, pages per session, average session duration, total page views, and bounce rate (the percentage of visitors who visit a site and then leave [ie, bounce] without continuing to another page on the same site).
    RESULTS: Analysis using a nonpaired Student t test demonstrated a statistically significant increase for total page views (before vs after: 33,065 vs 81,852; P<.001) and decrease for bounce rate (before vs after: 50.70% vs 0.23%; P<.001). Total users, new users, total sessions, sessions per user, and pages per session showed improvement. The average session duration was unchanged. Subgroup analysis showed that after the main page, the next 3 most frequently visited pages were related to GME programs in our department.
    CONCLUSIONS: Web analytics is a practical measure of a website's efficacy. Our data suggest that a modern website significantly improves user engagement. An up-to-date website is essential for contemporary GME recruitment, will likely enhance engagement of residency applicants with GME programs, and warrants further investigation.

    For optical communications links where receivers are signal-power-starved, such as through free-space, it is important to design transmitters and receivers that can operate as close as practically possible to theoretical limits. A total system penalty is typically assessed in terms of how far the end-to-end bit-error rate (BER) is from these limits. It is desirable, but usually difficult, to determine the division of this penalty between the transmitter and receiver. This paper describes a new rigorous and computationally based method that isolates which portion of the penalty can be assessed against the transmitter. There are two basic parts to this approach: (1) use of a coherent optical receiver to perform frequency down-conversion of a transmitter's optical signal waveform to the electrical domain, preserving both optical field amplitude and phase information, and (2): software-based analysis of the digitized electrical waveform. The result is a single numerical metric that quantifies how close a transmitter's signal waveform is to the ideal, based on its BER performance with a perfect software-defined matched-filter receiver demodulator. A detailed description of applying the proposed methodology to the waveform characterization of an optical burst-mode differential phase-shifted keying (DPSK) transmitter is experimentally demonstrated.

    Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol causes impaired mobility and judgment and driving accidents, resulting in more than 800 injuries and fatalities each day. Passive methods to detect intoxicated drivers beyond the safe driving limit can facilitate Just-In-Time alerts and reduce Driving Under the Influence (DUI) incidents. Popularly-owned smartphones are not only equipped with motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) that can be employed for passively collecting gait (walk) data but also have the processing power to run computationally expensive machine learning models. In this paper, we advance the state-of-the-art by proposing a novel method that utilizes a Bi-linear Convolution Neural Network (BiCNN) for analyzing smartphone accelerometer and gyroscope data to determine whether a smartphone user is over the legal driving limit (0.08) from their gait. After segmenting the gait data into steps, we converted the smartphone motion sensor data to a Gramian Angular Field (GAF) image and then leveraged the BiCNN architecture for intoxication classification. Distinguishing GAF-encoded images of the gait of intoxicated vs. sober users is challenging as the differences between the classes (intoxicated vs. sober) are subtle, also known as a fine-grained image classification problem. The BiCNN neural network has previously produced state-of-the-art results on fine-grained image classification of natural images. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to innovatively utilize the BiCNN to classify GAF encoded images of smartphone gait data in order to detect intoxication. Prior work had explored using the BiCNN to classify natural images or explored other gait-related tasks but not intoxication Our complete intoxication classification pipeline consists of several important pre-processing steps carefully adapted to the BAC classification task, including step detection and segmentation, data normalization to account for inter-subject variability, data fusion, GAF image generation from time-series data, and a BiCNN classification model. In rigorous evaluation, our BiCNN model achieves an accuracy of 83.5%, outperforming the previous state-of-the-art and demonstrating the feasibility of our approach.

    In geotechnical engineering, a large number of pillars are often left in underground space to support the overlying strata and protect the surface environment. To enhance pillar stability and prevent instability, this study proposes an innovative technology for pillar reinforcement. Specifically, local confinement of the pillar is achieved through fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strips, resulting in the formation of a more stable composite structure. In order to validate the effectiveness of this structural approach, acoustic emission characteristics and surface strain field characteristics were monitored during failure processes, while mathematical models were employed to predict specimen instability. The test results revealed that increasing FRP strip confinement width led to heightened activity in acoustic emission events during failure processes, accompanied by a decrease in shear cracks but an increase in tensile cracks. Moreover, ductility was improved and deformation resistance capacity was enhanced within specimens. Notably, initial crack generation occurred within unconfined regions of specimens during failures; however, both length and width as well as overall numbers of cracks significantly decreased due to implementation of FRP strips. Consequently, specimen failure speed was slowed down accordingly. Finally, the instability of the partial FRP-confined cement mortar could be more accurately predicted based on the model of FRP-confined concrete. It was verified by the test results.

    The natural clay is an abundant, accessible, and low-cost material that has the potential for use in the water and wastewater industry. In this paper, Iranian natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite were used to remove toxic arsenic from the liquid environment. The natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The effects of parameters (initial pH, temperature, sorption dose, and contact time) on the efficiency and behavior of the arsenic(V) adsorption process were studied. Freundlich (R2 = 0.945 and 0.989), Langmuir (R2 = 0.922 and 0.931), modified Langmuir (R2 = 0.921 and 0.929), and Dubinin-Radushkevich (R2 = 0.706 and 0.723) models were fitted to evaluate the equilibrium data of arsenic(V) adsorption process by natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite, respectively. The Langmuir adsorption capacity of arsenic(V) by the natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite was determined to be 86.86 mg/g and 120.70 mg/g, respectively. The arsenic(V) adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. Negative values of ΔG° and ΔH° showed that the arsenic(V) sorption by the studied materials is thermodynamically spontaneous and exothermic. According to the findings, the natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn are suitable and recyclable sorbents for arsenic(V) adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, the composite of clay with iron and manganese can improve the efficiency of clay in the removal of arsenic.

    Pharmaceutical contaminants present in wastewaters cause severe health hazards among chronically exposed population. Emerging pharmaceutically active contaminants pose a serious challenge to conventional treatment technologies. Employing advanced treatment technologies for the abatement of such contaminants is usually energy-intensive. In this study, a complex pharmaceutical wastewater from a pharmaceutical industry in California, USA, was treated by employing a novel bio-electrochemical treatment train system. Labeled "Bio-electroperoxone," our proposed system comprises (i) an electrically bound biofilm reactor (EBBR) that accelerates bacterial adhesion for the removal of biodegradable and persistent organics and (ii) an electroperoxone reactor that removes recalcitrant organics with minimal energy uptake. The EBBR comprises a platinum-coated titanium cathode and a conductive nematic liquid crystal display electrode (NLCE) obtained from electronic waste that serves as the anode. Characterization of functional groups, morphology, and elemental mapping of NLCE were carried out to explain mechanisms for rapid biofilm attachment. The concomitant electroperoxone reactor comprises a platinum-coated titanium (Pt-Ti) anode and a reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) cathode that catalyzes the two-electron reduction of oxygen to form in situ H2O2. The bio-electroperoxone system (i) inactivated 99.99% of the micro-organisms, removed (ii) 92.20% of the color, (iii) 84.72% of the total suspended solids, and (iv) 89% of the total organic carbon (TOC). Possible mechanisms for the degradation of organic contaminants are elucidated. Bio-electroperoxone thus paves the way for an efficient and sustainable approach for the efficient removal of both biodegradable and recalcitrant, persistent organic contaminants from pharmaceutical and possibly other complex wastewaters.

    Vanadium dioxide (VO2), as a typical thermochromic material used in smart windows, is always limited by its weaker solar regulation efficiency (ΔTsol) and lower luminous transmittance (Tlum). Except for common approaches such as doping, coating, and special structure, compositing is another effective method. The macroscopic thermochromic (from colorless to blue) ionic liquid-nickel-chlorine (IL-Ni-Cl) complexes are selected in this paper to be combined with VO2 nanoparticles forming a composite film. This novel scheme demonstrates outstanding optical properties: ΔTsol = 26.45% and Tlum,l = 66.44%, Tlum,h = 43.93%. Besides, the addition of the IL-Ni-Cl complexes endows the film with an obvious color change from light brown to dark green as temperature rises. This splendid visible thermochromic performance makes the composite film superior in function exhibiting and application of smart windows.
