- ArticleTunali Akar S, Rüstemoğlu S, Turkyilmaz S, Sayin F, Akar T.Chemosphere. 2025 Mar;373:144127.Through batch and fixed-bed column operations, nickel ions were extracted from a contaminated aqueous media by adsorption onto silica gel-immobilized alunite (Sg@Aln). A three-layer backward-propagating network with an ideal pattern of 5-10-1 and 4-10-1 was used to train and validate an artificial neural network (ANN) model for process modeling and optimization in batch and continuous systems, respectively. For the test dataset, the model outputs of the model pointed out a satisfactory alignment between the anticipated and experimental response. The Sg@Aln dosage and contact time were recorded as the most relevant parameters in Ni2+ elimination. The Sg@Aln-metal interactions were also characterized using a variety of instrumental approaches. The maximum Ni2+ adsorption was achieved by utilizing 2 g/L of the adsorbent at a solution pH of 5.0 after 10 min of contact time, equating to 89.11%. The data corresponded well with the non-linear shape of the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.99), and the computed maximal adsorption capacity was 96.01 mg/g (1.64 × 10-3 mol/g) at 25 °C. Kinetic analysis reveals that the adsorption process is consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, with R2 = 0.9998. Thermodynamic findings indicated endothermicity, spontaneity, and adsorption favorability. Sg@Aln could remove 41.23 mg/g and 33.20 mg/g of Ni2+ from actual wastewater in batch and continuous processes, respectively. While the Sg@Aln column's breakthrough curve is consistent with Chu's simplistic model, the breakthrough capacity was 69.35 mg/g. Overall, the results might open new possibilities for treating metal pollution in the aquatic environment.

Yet, little is currently known about the genetic correlation of CFH polymorphisms with sepsis due to various microbial infections. A case-control method (488 septic patients and 527 healthy individuals) was carried out in this study to investigate the genetic relationship between CFH polymorphisms (rs3753394 C/T, rs1065489 G/T and rs1061170 C/T) and susceptibility to sepsis caused by bacterial infections in Chinese Han populations. Our findings indicated that the frequency of rs3753394 CT/TT genotype in the septic patients with P. aeruginosa was significantly higher than that in the control individuals (P = 0.033, OR = 2.668, 95%CI = 1.072-6.334). The rs3753394 T allele frequency in the P. aeruginosa-infected patients was significantly increased, compared to that in the healthy controls (P = 0.014, OR = 1.68, 95%CI = 1.118-2.538). Moreover, these significant differences of rs3753394 genotype and allele frequencies remained after multiple testing corrections [P (corr.) = 0.033 for genotype; P (corr.) = 0.033 for allele]. The current study highlighted the significance of CFH polymorphism rs3753394 as a potential biomarker for targeting P. aeruginosa infection in critically ill patients.

The current experiment investigated the anti-obesity potential of prawn shell derived chitosan on a range of variables relevant to obesity in a pig model. The two dietary treatment groups included in this 63 day study were: T1) basal diet and T2) basal diet plus 1000 ppm chitosan (n = 20 gilts per group (70 ± 0.90 kg). The parameter categories which were assessed included: performance, nutrient digestibility, serum leptin concentrations, nutrient transporter and digestive enzyme gene expression and gut microbial populations. Pigs offered chitosan had reduced feed intake and final body weight (P< 0.001), lower ileal digestibility of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE) (P< 0.05) and reduced coefficient of apparent total tract digestibility (CATTD) of gross energy and nitrogen (P<0.05) when compared to the basal group. Fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2) gene expression was down-regulated in pigs offered chitosan (P = 0.05) relative to the basal diet. Serum leptin concentrations increased (P< 0.05) in animals offered the chitosan diet compared to pigs offered the basal diet. Fatness traits, back-fat depth (mm), fat content (kg), were significantly reduced while lean meat (%) was increased (P<0.05) in chitosan supplemented pigs. Pigs offered chitosan had decreased numbers of Firmicutes in the colon (P <0.05), and Lactobacillus spp. in both the caecum (P <0.05) and colon (P <0.001). Bifidobacteria populations were increased in the caecum of animals offered the chitosan diet (P <0.05). In conclusion, these findings suggest that prawn shell chitosan has potent anti-obesity/body weight control effects which are mediated through multiple biological systems in vivo.

However, scarce field investigations were conducted to elucidate this effect. In this study, a field campaign was conducted at a suburban site in southwest China. The whole observation was classified into three periods based on O3 levels and data coverage: the serious O3 pollution period (Aug 13-18 as P1), the O3 pollution period (Aug 22-28 as P2) and the clean period (Sep 3-12 as P3), with average O3 peak values of 96 ppb, 82 ppb and 44 ppb, respectively. There was no significant difference of the levels of O3 precursors (VOCs and NOx) between P1 and P2, and thus the evident elevation of OH peak values in P1 was suspected to be the most possible explanation for the higher O3 peak values. Considering the larger contribution of HONO photolysis to HOX primary production than photolysis of HCHO, O3 and ozonolysis of Alkenes, sensitivity tests of HONO reduction on O3 production rate in P1 are conducted by a 0-dimension model. Reduced HONO concentration effectively slows the O3 production in the morning, and such effect correlates with the calculated production rate of OH radicals from HONO photolysis. Higher HONO level supplying for OH radical initiation in the early morning might be the main reason for the higher O3 peak values in P1, which explained the correlation (R2 = 0.51) between average O3 value during daytime (10:00-19:00 LT) and average HONO value during early morning (00:00-05:00 LT). For nighttime accumulation, a suitable range of relative humidity that favored NO2 conversion within P1 was assumed to be the reason for the higher HONO concentration in the following early morning which promoted O3 peak values.
