- ArticleHorning ML, Alver B, Porter L, Lenarz-Coy S, Kamdar N.Appetite. 2021 11 01;166:105466.Mobile markets (MM) bring affordable, quality, healthy foods to high-need, low-food access communities. However, little is known about food insecurity of MM customers. This manuscript evaluates food insecurity prevalence in MM customers and assesses associations between food insecurity and MM use, food-related characteristics and behaviors, and fruit and vegetable (FV) intake. Customers (N = 302) completed cross-sectional surveys in summer 2019 that assessed: food security, food availability, cooking attitude, self-efficacy for healthy cooking, self-efficacy for cooking and eating FV, social connectedness, and FV intake. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were used to describe and assess associations with food insecurity and FV intake. Results show most MM customers were food insecure (85%). In logistic regression models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, long-term MM use (OR = 0.77, CI = 0.60-0.997), access to affordable, quality foods (OR = 0.81, CI = 0.71-0.93), and self-efficacy for both cooking healthy foods (OR = 0.88, CI = 0.80-0.97) and cooking and eating FV (OR = 0.90, CI = 0.82-0.98) were associated with lower odds of food insecurity; negative cooking attitudes (OR = 1.12, CI = 1.02-1.24) were associated with higher odds of food insecurity. Being food insecure (β = -1.37, SE=0.43, p < 0.01) was associated with poorer FV intake; this association attenuated slightly (β = -1.22, SE=0.43, p < 0.01) when length of MM use was added to the general linear model, which was also associated with higher fruit and vegetable intake (β = 0.26, SE=0.10, p = 0.01). Results suggest the MM reaches customers experiencing high levels of food insecurity and long-term MM use is associated with lower food insecurity and higher FV intake. Relationships between food insecurity and several food characteristics/behaviors provide insight for potential targets for wrap-around interventions to address food insecurity among customers. Findings suggest longitudinal evaluation of the MM's impact on food security and other food-related characteristics/behaviors is warranted.

This genus, comprising 23 accepted species, received less scientific attention compared to other genera of the Euphorbiaceae family. Seven Homalanthus species, such as H. giganteus, H. macradenius, H. nutans, H. nervosus, N. novoguineensis, H. populneus, and H. populifolius, have been reported to treat various health problems in traditional medicine. Only a few Homalanthus species have been investigated for their biological activities, including antibacterial, anti-HIV, anti-protozoal, estrogenic, and wound-healing activities. From a phytochemical point of view ent-atisane, ent-kaurane, and tigliane diterpenoids, triterpenoids, coumarins, and flavonol glycosides were found to be characteristic metabolites of the genus. The most promising compound is prostratin, isolated from H. nutans, with anti-HIV activity and the ability to eradicate the HIV reservoir in infected patients by mechanism of protein kinase C (PKC) agonist. This review provides information on traditional usage, phytochemistry, and biological activity of the genus Homalanthus with the aim to delineate future research directions.

We first reported a case of locally advanced undifferentiated sarcomatoid carcinoma of right maxillary sinus with PDCD6-TERT fusion gene. The patient with a previous history of moderate alcohol drinking and smoking. The patient underwent surgical treatment. The tumor tissue using NGS analysis, no other driver gene mutations, and the PD-L1 IHC was negative. He received TPF regimen induction chemotherapy combined with anti-PD1 inhibitor and radiotherapy. The effect of treatment was good.

CAA is often seen in the brains of elderly individuals and in a majority of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The molecular pathways triggered by vascular Aβ, causing vessel wall breakdown and ultimately leading to intracerebral haemorrhage and cognitive decline, remain poorly understood. The occurrence of CAA-related inflammation (CAA-ri) and Amyloid-Related Imaging Abnormalities (ARIA) have sparked interest for a role of neuroinflammation in CAA pathogenesis. This review discusses prior studies of neuroinflammation in CAA and outlines potential future research directions targeting candidates such as matrix metalloproteinases, complement activation, microglial activation, reactive astrocytes and parenchymal border macrophages. Understanding the role of neuroinflammation in CAA pathogenesis could help identify new therapeutic strategies.
- ArticleLev-Ari S.Cognition. 2023 08;237:105466.The distribution of word order across languages is skewed with SOV order (e.g., researchers sentences write) and SVO order (e.g., researchers write sentences) being >100 times more common than OSV order (sentences researchers write). It is commonly assumed that cross-linguistic preferences reflect cognitive biases, but it is unknown why some languages exhibit dispreferred patterns, or why languages settle on a specific pattern out of several preferred ones. This paper tests whether larger communities are more likely to rely on cross-linguistically preferred patterns as a way to overcome the greater communicative challenges they encounter. Participants played a communication game in large groups, small groups, or alone. Results support the hypothesis that community size influences word order as well as suggest that SOV and SVO orders are prevalent for different reasons with SVO specifically addressing communicative pressures. The studies thus show how community structure can give rise to cross-linguistic preferences, when these preferences can be overridden, and suggest how language might change with changes in social structure.

Human exposure to CPs is primarily through dietary intake, especially from animal-derived food products. Even so, there is little information regarding CP concentrations in dairy products. In this study, raw samples of cow milk were collected from various regions in China within the Neimenggu (n = 10), Hebei (n = 9), Shandong (n = 10), Henan (n = 10) and Hubei (n = 9) provinces. The mean concentrations of short chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium chain CPs (MCCPs) in the milk samples from industrial areas (1670 and 190 ng/g lipid, respectively) were higher than those from non-industrial areas (490 and 72 ng/g lipid, respectively). In most samples, C10H16Cl6 and C14H23Cl7 were the primary SCCP and MCCP congener groups, respectively. The mean concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs in dairy cow feed (silage) were determined to be 750 and 36 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The SCCP and MCCP congener group patterns in the milk were similar to those in the silage, indicating that animal feed intake might be an important pathway for the exposure of dairy cows to CPs. Thus, the ingestion of CPs by humans through dairy products should not be neglected and the contamination of animal feed by CPs should be considered.

Etiological factors and mechanisms underlying these sex differences remain one of the most understudied aspects of this disorder. The current paper seeks to provide a novel theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon by reviewing evidence that females with ADHD may experience a "double whammy" of organizational and activational pubertal hormonal effects. We propose a novel theory of activational effects of cyclical circulating ovarian hormones on ADHD with increasing risk at times of rapid declines in estrogen. These declines may decrease executive function and trait control at two points of the cycle characterized by biphasic affective risk: (1) increases in approach/risk-taking behaviors at mid-cycle (periovulatory) and (2) increases in avoidance/negative affect perimenstrually. Low estrogen and control may then interact with increases in positive and negative affect, respectively, to increase hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms post-ovulation and inattention symptoms perimenstrually. These interactions may be exacerbated by organizational pubertal effects on relatively overdeveloped limbic circuitry and adolescent-specific social pressures magnified in females with ADHD.

Numerous ex vivo studies have implicated that hypoxia episodes leading to disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis and redox status contribute to the progression of various neuropathologies and cell death. Isolation and maintenance of primary cell culture being cost-intensive, the details of the time course relationship between Ca2+ overload, L-type Ca2+ channel function, and neurite retraction under chronic and long-term hypoxia remain undefined. In order to explore the effect of oxidative stress and Ca2+ overload on neurite length, first, we developed a 5-day-long neurite outgrowth model using N2a cell line. Second, we propose a chronic hypoxia model to investigate the modulation of the L-type Ca2+ channel (Cav1.2) and oxidative resistance gene (OXR1) expression level during the process of neurite retraction and neuronal damage over 32 h. Thirdly, we developed a framework for quantitative analysis of cytosolic Ca2+, superoxide formation, neurite length, and constriction formation in individual cells using live imaging that provides an understanding of molecular targets. Our findings suggest that an increase in cytosolic Ca2+ is a feature of an early phase of hypoxic stress. Further, we demonstrate that augmentation in the L-type channel leads to amplification in Ca2+ overload, ROS accumulation, and a reduction in neurite length during the late phase of hypoxic stress. Next, we demonstrated that non-prophylactic treatment of resveratrol leads to the reduction of calcium overloading under chronic hypoxia via lowering of L-type channel expression. Finally, we demonstrate that resveratrol-mediated reduction of Cav1.2 channel and STAT3 expression are associated with retention of neurite integrity. The proposed in vitro model assumes significance in the context of drug designing and testing that demands monitoring of neurite length and constriction formations by imaging before animal testing.

In this work, we investigated the transcriptional activity of HERVs following infection of human liver cells (HepaRG) with human adenovirus C serotype 5 (HAdV-C5). HAdV-C5 infection results in reactivation of several HERV groups as well as differentially expressed genes. Interestingly, in HAdV-C5 infection, upregulated genes that were in close chromosomal proximity to upregulated HERV loci were associated with influencing viral carcinogenesis and inflammatory signaling. We also identified an FBXO17 transcript encoding an intronic ERVK9-11 sense sequence upon HAdV-C5 infection. FBXO17 has previously been described as an important factor in the regulation of the interferon response. This suggests that specific HERV groups may have the potential to trigger gene networks and influence viral immune responses.

All the synthesized conjugates reveal antiproliferative properties against A431 (squamous skin) cancer cell line with potency higher than that of 5-fluorouracil. Many of the synthesized agents also exhibit promising antiproliferative properties against HCT116 (colon) cancer cell line, of which 5o and 5c are the most effective with 12.9, 9.8 folds potency compared with Sunitinib. Promising activity is also shown against MCF7 (breast) cancer cell line with 1.19, 1.12 folds relative to 5-fluorouracil. PI-flow cytometry of compound 5c supports the arrest of cell cycle at G1-phase. However, compound 5o and Sunitinib arrest the cell cycle at S-phase. The synthesized conjugates can be considered as multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors due to the promising properties against VEGFR-2 and EGFR in MCF7 and HCT116. CDOCKER studies support the EGFR inhibitory properties. Compounds 5p and 5i possessing thienylidene heterocycle are anti-SARS-CoV-2 with high therapeutic indices. Many of the synthesized agents show enhanced COX-1/2 properties than aspirin with better selectivity index towards COX-2 relative to COX-1. The possible applicability of the potent candidates discovered as antitumor and anti-SARS-CoV-2 is supported by the safe profile against normal (non-cancer, RPE1 and VERO-E6) cells.

Recently, ferroptosis has been found to participate in the development of various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiomyopathy, heart failure, aortic dissection and stroke. Cardiovascular homeostasis is indulged in delicate equilibrium of assorted cell types composing the heart or vessels, and how ferroptosis contributes to the pathophysiological responses in CVD progression is unclear. Herein, we reviewed recent discoveries on the basis of ferroptosis and its involvement in CVD pathogenesis, together with related therapeutic potentials, aiming to provide insights on fundamental mechanisms of ferroptosis and implications in CVDs and associated disorders.
- ArticleZhang W, Tang Y, Lu C, Zou J, Ruan M, Yin Y, Qing M, Song Q.Ultrason Sonochem. 2021 Apr;72:105466.A series of CuCe-modified TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts synthesized by stepwise impregnation method and ultrasonic-assisted impregnation method were investigated to research the removal of NO in the simulated flue gas. Results showed that the CuCe/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst prepared by ultrasonic-assisted impregnation method exhibited the superior NO conversion, in which higher than 85% NO was degraded at the temperature range of 250-400 °C and the highest NO conversion of 94% at 350 °C. It proves that ultrasonic treatment can markedly improve the performance of catalysts. The effect of ultrasonic enhancement on CuCe/TiO2-ZrO2 was comprehensively studied through being characterized by physicochemical characterization. Results reveal that the ultrasonic cavitation effect improves the distribution of active species and the synergistic interaction between Cu with Ce components (Cu+ + Ce4+ ↔ Cu2+ + Ce3+) on the catalysts significantly, thus resulting in better dispersibility as well as a higher ratio of Cu2+ and Ce3+ of the catalysts. Moreover, it was found that the CuCe/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst prepared by the ultrasonic-assisted impregnation method represented a higher degree of ultrafine metal particles and evenness. The above results were described with the generalized dimension and singularity spectra in multifractal analysis and validated by the comparative test. Therefore, it can be concluded that ultrasonic treatment facilitates the particle size and distribution of active sites on the catalysts.

METHODS: In part 1, a microcosm biofilm protocol was employed. One hundred twenty-six bovine enamel specimens were treated with: Resveratrol (50, 100, 200, 400 µg/mL), Phosphate buffered saline (negative control), Dimethyl sulfoxide (negative control) and 0.12% Chlorhexidine (positive control). The biofilm was produced from the saliva of 10 volunteers, under 0.2% sucrose exposure for 5 days, and daily treated with the solutions (1 min). At the end of the experimental period, resazurin and viable plate count assays were performed. Enamel demineralization was evaluated by transverse microrradiography (TMR). In part 2, 12 volunteers participated in a triple-blind crossover protocol for 7 weeks, according to the following treatments: 1) 100 mg/L resveratrol; 2) 0.05% NaF (226 mg/L F); 3) 100 mg/L resveratrol + 0.05% NaF; 4) Deionized water (negative control). Biofilm samples were collected from both sides of the mouth 12 h after the use of the solutions.
RESULTS: Resveratrol at 50 and 200 µg/mL significantly reduced biofilm metabolic activity and mutans streptococci, respectively. Chlorhexidine was an effective treatment to significantly reduce all parameters, being an important antimicrobial and anticaries agent in vitro. Resveratrol alone or associated with NaF modulated several caries-associated bacteria in vivo.
CONCLUSION: The present study represents the first step regarding the use of resveratrol within the concept of acquired enamel pellicle and biofilm engineering to prevent dental caries. - ArticleDussert E, Tourret M, Deracinois B, Duban M, Leclère V, Cudennec B, Ravallec R, Behra-Miellet J.Data Brief. 2020 Jun;30:105466.The identification of non-fermentative Gram negative bacilli from run-off and spring water, including fluorescent Pseudomonas is very complex and investigations are needed to contribute to the systematic of these bacteria. In this dataset, the phenotypical profiles of three strains isolated from Vosges mountains first identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens were determined using APIⓇ 50 CH galleries. Then, the identification of their proteins released directly into water was carried out using tandem/mass spectrometry after separating proteins on native two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels. Finally, genotypic analysis data is presented, that illustrates biodiversity in this fluorescent bacterial group. This data is referred by a research article entitled "Fluorescent Pseudomonas strains from mid-mountain water able to release antioxidant proteins directly into water".
- ArticleTang L, Liu M, Song S, Hu C, Lam PKS, Lam JCW, Chen L.Aquat Toxicol. 2020 May;222:105466.The co-occurrence of hypoxia and xenobiotics is extremely common in natural environments, highlighting the necessity to elicit their interaction on aquatic toxicities. In the present study, marine medaka embryos were exposed to various concentrations (nominal 0, 1, 3.3 and 10 mg/L) of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), an environmental pollutant of emerging concern, under either normoxia (6.9 mg/L) or hypoxia (1.7 mg/L) condition. After acute exposure till 15 days post-fertilization, single or combined toxicities of PFBS and hypoxia on embryonic development (e.g., mortality, hatching and heartbeat) and endocrine systems were investigated. Sex and thyroid hormones were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Transcriptional changes of endocrine genes were determined by quantitative real-time PCR assays. Co-exposure to 10 mg/L PFBS and hypoxia caused a further reduction in survival rate and heart beat compared to single exposure. PFBS induced a precocious hatching, while no larvae hatched under hypoxia condition. By disturbing the balance of sex hormones, either PFBS or hypoxia single exposure produced an anti-estrogenic activity in medaka larvae. However, PFBS and hypoxia combinations reversed to estrogenic activity in co-exposed larvae. Variation in disrupting pattern may be attributed to the interactive effects on steroidogenic pathway involving diverse cytochrome P450 enzymes. Regarding thyroid system, PFBS exposure caused detriments of multiple processes along thyroidal axis (e.g., feedback regulation, synthesis and transport of thyroid hormones, receptor-mediated signaling and thyroid gland development), while hypoxia potently impaired the development and function of thyroid gland. Combinations of PFBS and hypoxia interacted to dysregulate the function of thyroid endocrine system. In summary, the present study revealed the dynamic interaction of PFBS pollutant and hypoxia on aquatic developmental toxicities and endocrine disruption. Considering the frequent co-occurrence of xenobiotics and hypoxia, current results would be beneficial to improve our understanding about their interactive mechanisms and provide baseline evidences for accurate ecological risk evaluation.

Our view of invertebrate cognition may also be biased by the choice of experimental stimuli. Here, the stimuli (color) pairs used in the match-to-sample tasks affected the performance of buff-tailed bumblebees (Bombus terrestris). We trained the bees to roll a tool, a ball, to a goal that matched its color. Bees trained with a yellow-and-orange/red stimuli pair took more training bouts to reach our color-matching criterion than those trained with a blue-and-yellow stimuli pair. When assessing the bees' concept learning ability in a transfer test with a novel color, the bees trained with blue and yellow (novel color: orange/red) were highly successful, the bees trained with blue and orange/red (novel color: yellow) did not differ from random, and those trained with yellow and orange/red (novel color: blue) failed the test. These results highlight that stimulus salience can affect our conclusions on test subjects' cognitive ability. Therefore, we encourage paying attention to stimulus salience (among other factors) when assessing the cognition of invertebrates.

However, evidence is scarce regarding factors that can contribute to eliminating inequality in DFLE according to education level. This study aimed to clarify the association between education and DFLE and estimate whether DFLE in people with lower education may increase to the same level as that in people with higher education through social participation.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 13,849 Japanese people aged 65 years and older who participated in a 13-year prospective study. At baseline, we collected information on education levels (low, middle, or high) and social participation. DFLE was defined as the average duration people expect to live without disability. To calculate DFLE for each education level group, the multistate life table method was employed using a Markov model.
RESULTS: At the age of 65 years, DFLE (95 % confidence interval [CI]) in women with low education was 21.3 years (20.8-21.8) without social participation and 24.3 (23.8-24.9) with social participation. In the middle education group, DFLE was 22.1 (21.6-22.6) without social participation and 25.0 (24.6-25.5) with social participation. In the high education group, DFLE was 22.1 (21.5-22.8) without social participation and 25.5 (25.0-26.0) with social participation. Similar results were found for men.
CONCLUSIONS: DFLE in people with low or middle education with social participation was almost the same as that in those with high education with social participation, suggesting the possibility that disparities in DFLE by education level could be offset by promoting social participation in older adults. - ArticleIto A, Fukaya M, Sugawara T, Hara Y, Okamoto H, Yamauchi J, Sakagami H.Neurobiol Dis. 2021 11;159:105466.Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), mGluR1 and mGluR5, in the spinal cord are implicated in nociceptive transmission and plasticity through G protein-mediated second messenger cascades leading to the activation of various protein kinases such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). In this study, we demonstrated that cytohesin-2, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for ADP ribosylation factors (Arfs), is abundantly expressed in subsets of excitatory interneurons and projection neurons in the superficial dorsal horn. Cytohesin-2 is enriched in the perisynapse on the postsynaptic membrane of dorsal horn neurons and forms a protein complex with mGluR5 in the spinal cord. Central nervous system-specific cytohesin-2 conditional knockout mice exhibited reduced mechanical allodynia in inflammatory and neuropathic pain models. Pharmacological blockade of cytohesin catalytic activity with SecinH3 similarly reduced mechanical allodynia and inhibited the spinal activation of Arf6, but not Arf1, in both pain models. Furthermore, cytohesin-2 conditional knockout mice exhibited reduced mechanical allodynia and ERK1/2 activation following the pharmacological activation of spinal mGluR1/5 with 3,5-dihydroxylphenylglycine (DHPG). The present study suggests that cytothesin-2 is functionally associated with mGluR5 during the development of mechanical allodynia through the activation of Arf6 in spinal dorsal horn neurons.
