- ArticleDipu MNH, Apu MH, Chowdhury PP.Heliyon. 2024 May 15;10(9):e29918.The crane hook is a widely utilized component in several industries for the purpose of lifting things. The crane hook must possess the capacity to withstand the intended load without encountering any complications, hence ensuring the safety of both personnel and the objects being lifted. The process of analysis is crucial for the effective utilization of a crane hook. The primary aim of this study was to determine the most efficient cross-sectional crane hook among five distinct geometric profiles. This was achieved through the application of finite element analysis using Solidworks software. Subsequently, the identified cross-sectional profile was further examined using the Python programming language, taking into account the classical equation of a curved beam. The five cross-sectional shapes seen in the study were circular, rectangular, trapezoidal, I-shaped, and T-shaped. For the purposes of this investigation, the chosen material for each cross-sectional crane hook model was 34CrMo4 steel. Despite the identical boundary constraints imposed on all the chosen cross-sectional crane hook profiles, it was observed that the trapezoidal cross-sectional crane hook exhibited superior performance compared to the others. The trapezoidal cross-sectional crane hook model exhibited a Von Mises stress of 203 MPa, with a corresponding factor of safety of 3.20. Further experimentation was conducted using Python to examine the trapezoidal profile. The results indicated that an increased level of parallelism in the inner side of the trapezoidal shape corresponded to a higher factor of safety. Hence, it is advisable to maintain the trapezoidal cross-sectional profile of the crane hook, with due consideration given to maximizing the length of the inner parallel side. The enhancement of design leads to a decrease in the likelihood of failure and the occurrence of undesirable accidents.
- ArticleAl-Tabbaa MM, Bdiwi E, Endress K, Altarras K.Cureus. 2022 Oct;14(10):e29918.OBJECTIVES: Determine the impact of Narcan administrations in Peoria County, IL on the number of overdose deaths by testing the statistical significance of the association between monthly Narcan reversals and overdose mortality. As well as re-shedding the light on the opioid pandemic post-COVID.
METHODS: We collected data on Narcan reversals from hospital emergency departments, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the County Sheriff's Office, local police departments, and other agencies that distributed and/or administered Narcan in Peoria County from January through December 2018. Data for the 2018 overdose mortality was collected through vital records at the Peoria City/County Health Department.
RESULTS: Results from simple linear regression suggest that a significant proportion of the total variation in overdose mortality over 2018 was predicted by the Narcan reversals, F(1, 11) = 5.872, p< 0.05. Multiple R2 indicates that approximately 30.7% of the variation in overdose mortality was predicted by the Narcan reversals. If there were 0 Narcan reversals, there would be 8.362 overdose deaths per month.
CONCLUSIONS: Narcan is known to save lives in cases of opioid overdose, and the need for increased administration campaigns is warranted to further battle the opioid epidemic. As this study has proven, Narcan administration has the potential to significantly decrease overdose mortality. - ArticleLeonetti M, Karbasi S, Mafi A, DelRe E, Conti C.Sci Rep. 2016 07 20;6:29918.A single-photon beating with itself can produce even the most elaborate optical fringe pattern. However, the large amount of information enclosed in such a pattern is typically inaccessible, since the complete distribution can be visualized only after many detections. In fact this limitation is only true for delocalized patterns. Here we demonstrate how reconfigurable localized optical patterns allow to encode up to 6 bits of information in disorder-induced high transmission channels, even using a small number of photon counts. We developed a quantum key distribution scheme for fiber communication in which high information capacity is achieved through position and momentum complementarity.
- ArticleGök G, Tulun Ş, Çelebi H.Sci Rep. 2024 Dec 02;14(1):29918.In this study, the pollution intensity, spatial distribution, and index-based risk distribution in campuses, which are a small prototype of cities, were mapped and the sources of heavy metals in the soil were investigated. Soil samples were taken from 9 different points from the Aksaray University Central campus, which was determined as the study area. It has been determined that the pH value in the collected soil samples varies between 8.7 and 11.0. This situation created an effect on reducing the accumulation and mobility of heavy metals in the soil. When the study area was evaluated based on the geo-accumulation index, Pb heavy metal was much denser in the places indicated as circulation areas and where students were actively present. Based on the pollution load index, it was concluded that 75% of the study area was moderately/highly polluted, and the rest consisted of unpolluted soils. Pearson correlation analysis and APCS-MLR analyses conducted to determine the source distribution showed that the contributions of natural sources, mixed sources of industrial and traffic activities, agricultural activity-based sources, and other sources were 57.49%, 21.44%, 12.67%, and 8.40%, respectively. Pb is mainly related to the mixed sources of industrial and traffic activities. Therefore, to clear up its long-term impact on the accumulation of heavy metals in the soil, it is important to conduct continuous heavy metal monitoring in the soil throughout the campus.
- ArticleCharlon S, Marais S, Dargent E, Soulestin J, Sclavons M, Follain N.Phys Chem Chem Phys. 2015 Nov 28;17(44):29918-34.Composites composed of polyesters, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) or poly[(butylene succinate)-co-(butylene adipate)] (PBSA), and 5 wt% of montmorillonite (CNa) or organo-modified montmorillonite (C30B) were melt-processed and transformed into films by either compression-molding or extrusion-calendering. XRD, rheological measurements and TEM images clearly indicated that films containing CNa are microcomposites, while nanocomposites were observed for those containing C30B. Using Flash DSC, it was possible, for the first time, not only to measure the heat capacity step at the glass transition of these two materials in their amorphous state, but also to investigate whether the preparation technique influenced the Rigid Amorphous Fraction (RAF) in our PBS- and PBSA-based nanocomposites. In this work, we have successfully shown the correlation between the microstructure of the films and their barrier properties, and especially the role played by the RAF. Indeed, the lowest permeabilities to gases and to water were determined in the films containing the highest RAF in both PBS- and PBSA-based materials.

Pricing policy is considered as one of the most effective means to reduce risky drinking and related harms. This protocol paper describes a study that will model and estimate the effects, effectiveness and cost-benefit of alcohol pricing policy initiatives in reducing risky drinking, health and social harms, and health inequalities among subpopulations in Australia.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is a modelling and epidemiological study using data from various resources, such as survey, previous literatures and response agencies. A number of statistical procedures will be undertaken to evaluate the impact of different alcohol pricing policy initiatives on various outcomes, including alcohol consumption in population subgroups, and health and social problems, and to measure health inequalities and cost-effectiveness of those proposed pricing policies, such as a 10% tax increase on all alcohol beverages or introduction of a minimum unit price.
ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The ethics approval of this study was obtained from the College Human Ethics Sub-Committee of the La Trobe University on 9 November 2017 (Ref: S17-206). While examining the heterogeneous effects of price policy across population subgroups, this study will provide the first comprehensive estimates of the likely impacts of alcohol price changes on health inequalities. The study will also provide sophisticated economic analyses of the impact of price policy changes, which is critical information for policy makers and will assist policy makers in directing resources to a more efficient alcohol strategy. Results will be made available to communities and societies, health departments and other researchers. - ArticleYang CC, Weng SF, Tseng KL, Ho CH.Medicine (Baltimore). 2022 Jul 08;101(27):e29918.METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 82 adult patients with MALA admitted to the ICU over 20 years. The association between the clinical parameters and mortality post-MALA was estimated using logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS: Patients with MALA admitted to the ICU presented with clinical symptoms mainly associated with the head (40.24%), chest (41.46%), and abdomen (35.37%). Additionally, the PLL distribution significantly varied with age, APACHE II = Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score, various laboratory parameters like nadir arterial bicarbonate level, multiple treatment modalities such as renal replacement therapy, and mortality. The overall mortality rate was 17.07%. After adjustment of age and gender, the significant predictors of mortality were APACHE II score, PLL, vasoactive support, ventilator support, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite MALA being a rare event, it is necessary to evaluate its clinical characteristics, especially the associated PLL and mortality. Instead of directly forming a target spot array, we propose to first convert the input beam into a closely connected Gaussian sub-beam array. All the Gaussian sub-beams have the same optical field distributions which thus can produce identical discrete spots on the target plane. Such a design concept is very beneficial to ensure the consistency for laser processing. Importantly, the introduction of an intermediate Gaussian sub-beam array can reduce diffraction effects when the size of each Gaussian sub-beam is sufficiently larger than that of the corresponding sub-area within the input beam. The desired transformation can be achieved by two typical systems. The first system consists of two plano-freeform lenses. The second system is composed of a plano-freeform lens and a lens with an entrance freeform surface and an exit surface of freeform lens array. The two freeform beam splitting systems can be determined based on appropriate ray mappings among the input, intermediate and target irradiance distributions and a subsequent double-surface construction. Geometrical and physical simulations verify the effectivenesses of the two beam splitting systems.
- ArticleFemia AP, Swidsinski A, Dolara P, Salvadori M, Amedei A, Caderni G.PLoS One. 2012;7(1):e29918.Mucin depleted foci (MDF) are precancerous lesions of the colon in carcinogen-treated rodents and humans at high risk. Since MDF show signs of inflammation we hypothesized that the defective mucous production would expose them to the risk of being penetrated by intestinal bacteria, which can be sensed by Toll-like receptors (Tlrs) and activate inflammatory pathways. To verify this hypothesis we tested the expression of 84 genes coding for Tlrs and associated pathways using RT-qPCR in MDF (n = 7) from 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-treated rats. Among the 84 tested genes, 26 were differentially expressed in MDF with 5 genes significantly up-regulated and 21 down-regulated when compared to the normal mucosa. Tlr2, as well as other downstream genes (Map4k4, Hspd1, Irak1, Ube2n), was significantly up-regulated. Among the genes regulating the NFkB pathway, only Map4k4 was significantly up-regulated, while 19 genes were not varied and 6 were down-regulated. Tlr2 protein was weakly expressed both in normal mucosa and MDF. To determine whether inflammation observed in MDF could be caused by bacteria contacting or infiltrating crypts, we performed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments with a rRNA universal bacterial probe. None of the 21 MDF tested, showed bacteria inside the crypts, while among the colonic tumors (n = 15), only one had very few bacteria on the surface and on the surrounding normal mucosa. In conclusion, the up-regulation of Tlr2 in MDF, suggests a link between this receptor and carcinogenesis, possibly related to a defective barrier function of these lesions. The data of FISH experiments do not support the hypothesis that inflammation in MDF and tumors is stimulated by bacterial infiltration.

The pumping source consists of a femtosecond master oscillator fiber amplifier based on thulium-doped ZBLAN fibers. It provides multi-watts of output power with the center wavelength of 1920 nm at 1 MHz repetition rate. The SC generated by pumping an elliptical core passive single-mode ZBLAN fiber spans from 350 nm to 4.5 µm and exhibits high stability. We characterized the SC pulse using sum-frequency cross-correlation frequency resolved optical gating.
- ArticleGarzón-Serrano AY, Lozano JD, Perez LD, Sierra CA, Macías MA.RSC Adv. 2024 Sep 18;14(41):29910-29918.During attempts to synthesize zirconium-based MOFs, we have obtained a new crystal structure of the cluster with Zr6O8 core and formula unit [Zr6O4(OH)4(OH2)8(CH3COO)4(SO4)4]·nH2O. Unlike other systems, mild conditions were employed in this case; no strong acids or hydrothermal conditions were required. The molecular assembly in the crystal is characterized by strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds connecting neighboring molecules, allowing the formation of a three-dimensional maze of tunnels with H2O molecules stabilizing the framework. Noteworthy, at 100 °C, the strong Zr6O8 core and the O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds help form a system where the molecular cluster is conserved, but the long-range order is lost. FT-IR, Raman, TGA, DSC, and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to characterize the title compound.

They may establish long-term shedding of divergent strains and may act as reservoirs of PV transmission. This study delved into the effect of the genetic evolution of complete PV genomes, from MHC class II-deficient patients, on the excretion duration and clinical outcomes. Stool samples from three PID patients underwent analysis for PV detection through inoculation on cell culture and real-time PCR, followed by VP1 partial sequencing and full genome sequencing using the Illumina technology. Our findings revealed a low number of mutations for one patient who cleared the virus, while two exhibited a high intra-host diversity favoring the establishment of severe outcomes. Neurovirulence-reverse mutations were detected in two patients, possibly leading to paralysis development. Furthermore, a recombination event, between type 3 Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus and Sabin-like1 (VDPV3/SL1), occurred in one patient. Our findings have suggested an association between intra-host diversity, recombination, prolonged excretion of the virus, and emergence of highly pathogenic strains. Further studies on intra-host diversity are crucial for a better understanding of the virus evolution as well as for the success of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Vitamins were incorporated with chemically synthesized nanoparticles (Fe, Zn, Cu and Se) to form a nano-nutrient complex (NNC). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed to confirm the structure and morphology of the as-prepared nutrients. A commercial basal diet without the addition of any NNC was used as a control and compared with the other two diets formulated with different levels of NNC. In a 60 day feeding trial, the fish fed with a diet of NNC60 showed significant differences in final weight and length compared with the basal diet. Furthermore, a high value of nutrient content was observed in the muscles of fish fed with nano diets. In addition, protein, total fat, vitamin C, and essential amino acid levels were significantly higher in the NNC60-treated fish compared with the other groups. The present study suggests that the addition of NNC to a commercial diet has the potential to enhance the growth performance and biochemical parameters in tilapia fish.

However, the reported excited-state decay mechanisms of fulgides do not include the effects of solvation explicitly to date. Herein, calculations using the high-level MS-CASPT2//CASSCF method were conducted to explore the photoinduced excited-state decay processes of the Eα conformer of a fulgide derivative in toluene with solvent effects treated by implicit PCM and explicit QM/MM models, respectively. Several minima and conical intersections were optimized successfully in and between the S0 and S1 states; then, two nonadiabatic excited-state decay channels that could efficiently drive the system to the ground state were proposed based on the excited-state ring-closure and isomerization paths. In addition, we also found that in the ring-closure path, the potential energy surface is essentially barrierless before approaching the conical intersection, while it needs to overcome a small energy barrier along the E → Z photoisomerization path for the nonadiabatic S1 → S0 internal conversion process. The present computational results could provide useful mechanistic insights into the photoinduced cyclization and isomerization reactions of fulgide and its derivatives.
- ArticleKankate L, Hamann T, Li S, Moskaleva LV, Gölzhäuser A, Turchanin A, Swiderek P.Phys Chem Chem Phys. 2018 Dec 05;20(47):29918-29930.Several studies have previously observed surprisingly low frequencies for the C-H stretching modes of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared from aromatic thiols. The reason for this property has so far remained elusive. Therefore, we report a novel study of the vibrational spectra of SAMs prepared on Au from two different aromatic thiols, namely, 4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl-4-thiol (NBPT) and 4-aminothiophenol (ATP). The SAMs were prepared by vapor deposition (VD) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) as well as by the solution method (SM) and their quality was controlled by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, amino terminated SAMs were also obtained by electron irradiation and by chemical reduction of NBPT SAMs. Beside infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), we have employed high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), by which VD SAMs can be studied in situ, i.e. without exposing them to air. Hence, we can exclude possible contributions of solvent molecules to the vibrational spectra. Nonetheless, HREELS in fact reveals the same large red shift of the C-H stretching modes in the SAMs as also observed in ex situ IRRAS experiments. In contrast, HREELS for physisorbed ATP and ATP in a KBr pellet measured by transmission infrared spectroscopy exhibit the expected aromatic bands. Using a computational approach, we can exclude molecular packing effects as origin of this shift. Therefore, we propose chemical changes in the aromatic rings during SAM formation as an alternative explanation for the observed frequency shift. As another striking effect, the N-H stretching vibrational modes of the amino-terminated SAMs are extremely weak in both IRRAS and HREELS despite the fact that XPS confirms the presence of amino groups. A very weak signal is observed only in the case of an electron irradiated NBPT SAM. In contrast, an energy loss ascribed to the N-H stretching vibrations is clearly observed in HREELS of ATP physisorbed on an ATP SAM and on graphite as well as in the transmission infrared spectrum of ATP in KBr. The extremely low intensity of these vibrations in the SAM is traced back to the inherently low transition dipole moment for the excitation of N-H stretching modes in free N-H groups. Furthermore, the calculations suggest that the much stronger signals of N-H stretching modes involved in hydrogen-bonding with adjacent amino groups are suppressed because these vibrations are oriented parallel to the surface.

The Raman spectra of the seven arylisoquinolines (AIQ) were calculated with the help of density functional theory (DFT). Very good agreement with the experimental data was achieved and a convincing mode assignment was performed with the help of the calculated potential energy distribution (PED). For the non-resonant Raman spectra the most prominent bands were assigned to ν(C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) stretching modes of the isoquinoline system. To differentiate between substances with similar structures, deep-UV resonance Raman spectra were recorded. Raman bands in the range between 1250 and 1210 cm-1 were assigned to ν(C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) stretching vibrations in combination with δ(HCC) deformation vibrations of the aryl rests. These vibrations of the aryl part of the molecules were selectively enhanced, which, thus, enabled the differentiation of similar active agents from each other. For λexc = 257 nm excitation, strong ν(C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) vibrations of the isoquinoline (benzo-) part dominate the Raman spectrum in the range between 1685 and 1585 cm-1 and for λexc = 244 nm the Raman signals between 1430 and 1350 cm-1 were enhanced and assigned to ν(C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) of the isoquinoline (pyridino-) system.
- ArticleGualtieri G, Di Lonardo S, Carotenuto F, Toscano P, Vagnoli C, Zaldei A, Gioli B.Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2021 Jun;28(23):29908-29918.A multi-year dataset of measurements of CO2 concentrations, eddy covariance fluxes, and meteorological parameters over the city centre of Florence (Italy) has been analysed to assess the role of anthropogenic emissions and meteorology in controlling urban CO2 concentrations. The latter exhibited a negative correlation with air temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and sensible heat flux and a positive one with relative humidity and emissions. A linear and an artificial neural network (ANN) model have been developed and validated for short-term modelling of 3-h CO2 concentrations. The ANN model performed better, with mean bias of 0.58 ppm, root mean square error within 30 ppm, and r2=0.49. Data clustering through the self-organized maps allowed to disentangle the role played by emissions and meteorological parameters in influencing CO2 concentrations. Sensitivity analysis of CO2 concentrations revealed a primary role played by the meteorological parameters, particularly wind speed. These results highlighted that (i) emission reduction actions at local urban scale should be better tied to actual and expected meteorological conditions and (ii) those actions alone have limited effects (e.g. a 20% emission reduction would result in a 3% CO2 concentrations reduction). For all these reasons, large-scale policies would be needed.

These devices, which are often encased in elastomeric materials, maintain or adjust their functionality during deformation, but can fail catastrophically if extended too far. Here, we report new functional composites in which stretchable electronic properties are coupled to molecular mechanochromic function, enabling at-a-glance visual cues that inform user control. These properties are realized by covalently incorporating a spiropyran mechanophore within poly(dimethylsiloxane) to indicate with a visible color change that a strain threshold has been reached. The resulting colorimetric elastomers can be molded and patterned so that, for example, the word "STOP" appears when a critical strain is reached, indicating to the user that further strain risks device failure. We also show that the strain at color onset can be controlled by layering silicones with different moduli into a composite. As a demonstration, we show how color onset can be tailored to indicate a when a specified frequency of a stretchable liquid metal antenna has been reached. The multiscale combination of mechanochromism and soft electronics offers a new avenue to empower user control of strain-dependent properties for future stretchable devices.
