Synovial sheath of extensor tendons
Air has been injected into the synovial sheath (5) of the long extensor tendons of the toes to distend the portion of this sheath that extends distal to the inferior extensor retinaculum (11). The specimen is viewed from an anterolateral direction.
1 . Dorsal intermediate cutaneous nerve
2 . Dorsal medial cutaneous nerve
3 . Extensor digitorum longus muscle (tendons covered by extensor retinaculum)
4 . Extensor hallucis longus muscle
5 . Tendinous sheath of extensor digitorum pedis longus muscle (inflated)
6 . Extensor hallucis brevis muscle
7 . Deep peroneal nerve
8 . Dorsalis pedis artery
9 . Extensor digitorum longus muscle (tendons of insertion)
10 . Lesser saphenous vein
