Dissection of lungs in situ
Left lung.
The upper lobe has been dissected from its medial aspect and has been retracted laterally.
  1. Trachea
  2. Aortic arch
  3. Superior vena cava
  4. Pericardium
  5. Ascending aorta
  6. Left superior pulmonary vein (note anterior intersegmental branches to upper lobe)
  7. Pulmonary trunk
  8. Upper pointer: Left auricle Lower pointer: Latex cast in left inferior pulmonary vein at entrance into left atrium)
  9. Left atrium (interior visible through openings cut in wall)
  10. Right atrium
  11. Left ventricle
  12. Right ventricle
  13. Internal thoracic artery
  14. Left phrenic nerve
  15. Apex of lung
  16. Left superior intercostal vein (not tributary accompanying left phrenic nerve)
  17. Anterior mediastinal lymph node
  18. Apical branch left pulmonary artery
  19. Posterior apical segmental bronchus (apical subsegmental branch)
  20. Anterior lateral branch left pulmonary artery
