Dissection of lungs in situ
Left lung.
The pleura has been divided at the hilus and has been removed from the nearby area of the mediastinum. The partially deflated upper lobe of the lung has been retracted laterally.
1 . Left subclavian artery
2 . Left vagus nerve
3 . Left common carotid artery
4 . Left phrenic nerve
5 . Internal thoracic artery (note plexus of nerves from inferior cervical ganglion along proximal part of artery)
6 . Mediastinal pleura
7 . Anterior mediastinal lymph node (note other nodes and plexus of lymphatic vessels in this area)
8 . Superior tracheobronchial lymph node (note lymphatic vessels entering node from lung and inferior part of mediastinum)
9 . Pericardium
10 . Anterior scalene muscle (cut off)
11 . Cupula pleurae
12 . Apex of lung
13 . Rib II
14 . Mediastinal surface upper lobe
15 . Costal pleura
16 . Costal surface upper lobe
17 . Left superior pulmonary vein
18 . Bronchopulmonary lymph node
