The mortality rate was highest in the group who developed septicaemia. In patients with negative blood cultures, the outcome was much more favourable, although the majority of them showed evidence of respiratory and/or bowel infections. It is felt that routine antibiotic therapy is advisable in the management of kwashiorkor.
