Susan Schwartzenberg & Tom Leader Studio, 2008-2012, readers guide.
Summary: Consists of a photographic record and landscape architectural layout of 22 benches containing a collection of personal stories about medical education, treatment, and research at Stanford. These thematically arranged granite benches/planters tied to chronological highlights of the history of medicine in paving stones constitute the Discovery Walk. The story includes conversations with over 200 research and clinical faculty, as well as students, staff, and alumni from the Stanford Community. The project was commissioned by Dean Philip Pizzo in 2008 for the centennial of the medical school and was dedicated in the spring of 2012. The Project also includes the Foundation Walk, a chronology of the school since its founding in 1858, and the Landscape Plan which creates an entrance to the School of Medicine and connection to the broader campus.
