Synovial sheath of extensor tendons

Air has been injected into the synovial sheath (5) of the long extensor tendons of the toes to distend the portion of this sheath that extends distal to the inferior extensor retinaculum (11). The specimen is viewed from an anterolateral direction.

2. Dorsal medial cutaneous nerve
3. Extensor digitorum longus muscle (tendons covered by extensor retinaculum)
4. Extensor hallucis longus muscle
5. Tendinous sheath of extensor digitorum pedis longus muscle (inflated)
6. Extensor hallucis brevis muscle
7. Deep peroneal nerve
8. Dorsalis pedis artery
9. Extensor digitorum longus muscle (tendons of insertion)
10. Lesser saphenous vein
11. Inferior extensor retinaculum
12. Lateral malleolus
13. Calcaneal branch of lateral sural nerve
14. Dorsal lateral cutaneous nerve
15. Peroneus longus muscle (tendon covered by inferior peroneal retinaculum)
