Abstract:	This collection includes materials from the Stanford career of Merton Bernfield. It is made up almost wholly of laboratory experiment log books kept by lab members. They are grouped, as Bernfield had them, by individual researcher or experiment focus. They are generally chronological within the groups. They span 1968-1987 with the bulk being from the 1970s.

Merton Bernfield, a pediatrician and microbiologist, was born 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois. He served Stanford 1967-1989 as part of the Stanford faculty in Human Biology and Pediatrics and as director of the Human Biology Program. After Stanford he moved to Harvard. At Stanford he researched glandular development and the extracellular matrix. He and his colleagues discovered the first syndecans. He died March 18, 2002.
