Biographical/Historical note

The Stanford University Medical Center Auxiliary existed from May 1929 to March 2015. The Auxiliary began as the Palo Alto Hospital Auxiliary. In 1959 it became the Palo Alto-Stanford Hospital Center Auxiliary and incorporated as such in April 1960. The name was changed again in October 1968 to Stanford University Medical Center Auxiliary. A dissolution vote was held on February 28, 2015.

The initial activities of the Auxiliary were Flower and Book Services as well as a Patient and Loan Fund. As the hospital evolved and grew so did the activities of the Auxiliary. Activities through the years included reception and information services, patient escorts, nutrition services, extra help in the pediatric ward and playroom, a baby photo program, pinkie puppets and cuddly companions, recreational services, gift shop and shopping cart, book cart, traffic patrol, and candy stripers.

The Auxiliary also supported the hospital with equipment purchases, provided loans and scholarships, and made financial gifts to the Chaplain’s Fund and others.

The collection includes a history which was maintained as part of the Auxiliary’s regular business activities and was compiled during the dissolution. It contains many more details and is available in Box 1, Folder 3.

Series 7: Scrapbooks includes a number of scrapbooks, photo albums, photo books, and loose scrapbook pages. The contents range from photographs, many with captions, to clippings from a variety of sources, many of which are from obscure publications, to ephemera such as programs, leaflets, and poetry.
