**May 9, 1828 Born - West Elkton (near Somerville, Ohio) to Ira Lane of North Carolina and Hannah Cooper of South Carolina.
184? Attended Farmer's College, near Cincinnati.
184? Course at Union Theological Seminary (later Union College), Schenectady, New York. (awarded honorary Master of Arts in 1862).
1851 M.D., Jefferson Medical College.
**1851-55 Interne and House officer, New York State Hospital, Ward's Island.
**1859 Navy surgeon at Naval Hospital, Quarantine, Staten Island. Sea duty aboard U.S.S. Decatur, stationed off coast of Central America and Europe.
Study at Goettingen while on 2 months furlough.
1860 Medical Study in England and Europe:
From the SF Medical Press, April, 1860: Dr. Lane, who visited our city some months since in the capacity of surgeon of the US slop-of-war Warren, has resigned his position for the purpose of spending some months in the hospitals of Europe, after which he designs coming to California for the purpose of finding a permanent home, as we are please to learn. Dr. Lane was marked first in the list of candidates who were examined for assistant surgeons in the Navy, in the 1856. His intelligence, suavity of manners, and gentlemanly deportment, secured many friends among medical men in this city during his brief stay, who could but be pleased at the accession to their ranks, of one so well calculated to work for the elevation of the profession.
1861 Joins his uncle, Elias Samuel Cooper, founder of the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific. Prof of Physiology.
1862 After Cooper's death, became Prof. of Anatomy at Medical Department of the University of the Pacific.
1863-65 Surgeon, Board of Enrollment for Southern California. United States Navy.
1864 Professor of Anatomy at Toland Medical School, San Francisco.
1871 Re-organized Medical College of the Pacific with former faculty members of the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific and Toland Medical School. Appointed Prof. of Surgery.
1872 Honorary Ll.D. Union College, Schenectady, N.Y.
1874/75 F.R.C.S. King's College, University of London School of Medicine.
1875/76 M.D., summa cum honore, Universitatis Literarie Friderick Guilame (Berlin). Included a course in pathology under Rudolf Virchow.
1882 Donated building and founded Cooper Medical College with funds earned in private practice.
1894 Donated building and founded Lane Hospital with funds earned in private practice.
1896 Founded Lane Medical Lectures.
1902 Donated funds to found Lane Medical Library at Cooper Medical College.
Feb. 18, 1902 Died.
1909 Cooper Medical College becomes Stanford University. Department of Medicine.
