The sternocleidomastoid muscle has been retracted posteriorly and the parotid gland displaced anteriorly. Lymphatic vessels and nodes are closely related to the part of the carotid sheath which covers the internal jugular vein.

  2. Superficial branch facial nerve (cut across)
  3. Posterior facial vein
  4. Angle of mandible
  5. Masseter muscle
  6. Parotidomasseteric fascia
  7. Lymphatic tissue along posterior facial vein
  8. Submandibular gland
  9. External maxillary artery and anterior facial vein
  10. Deep facial lymph nodes
  11. Accessory nerve (XI) entering sternocleidomastoid muscle
  12. Sternocleidomastoid muscle (retracted posteriorly)
  13. Superior deep cervical lymph nodes
  14. Greater auricular nerve
  15. Cervical nerve III
  16. Accessory nerve (XI) (branch to trapezius muscle)
  17. Prevertebral fascia
  18. Internal jugular vein (covered by carotid sheath)
