Kidneys, suprarenal glands and posterior abdominal vessels, nerves and muscles
Nerves, blood vessels, and muscle attachments in relation to lumbar vertebrae, close-up lateral view
This close-up view of the specimen shown in 151-7 is centered on the second and third lumbar vertebrae. Five distinct rami communicantes (11) pass forward across the body of the second lumbar vertebral and the disk below it to join the sympathetic trunk.
. Greater splanchnic nerve
. Celiac ganglion
. Superior mesenteric artery
. Middle suprarenal artery (cut off)
. Lumbar lymph node
. Abdominal aorta (divided)
. Lymph vessel (lumbar trunk)
. Cut end of hemiazygos vein (cut off at junction with left renal vein)
. Sympathetic trunk (emerging below diaphragm)
. Cut end of lumbar vein which joined left renal vein
. Rami communicantes
. Aortic plexus
. Ganglion of sympathetic trunk
. Body of vertebra L. III
. Ramus communicans
. Lumbar artery and vein III
. Medial lumbocostal arch
. Psoas major muscle (cut off)
. Intervertebral disc L. I-Il
. Quadratus lumborum muscle (cut off)
. Iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves (cut off)
. Ascending lumbar vein
. Lumbar nerve I (branch to lumbar plexus)
. Lumbar vein II
. Lumbar artery II
. Psoas major muscle (one of origins from transverse processes, cut off)
. Lumbar nerve II
. Lateral intertransverse muscle
. Intervertebral disc L. II-III
. Nerve to psoas major muscle
. Ascending lumbar vein
. Transverse process vertebra L. III
