Dissection of diaphragm
Diaphragm viewed from above, pleura and diaphragmatic part of pericardium intact
The heart and the anterior part of the pericardium have been removed. The upper lobes of the lungs have been cut away and the lower lobes have been dissected. The right phrenic nerve is stretched upward approximately in its normal course, while the left nerve has been cut off.
1 . Left atrium
2 . Left inferior pulmonary vein (cut off at entrance into left atrium)
3 . Pericardium
4 . Inferior lobe right lung
5 . Right phrenic nerve
6 . Inferior vena cava (cut off at entrance into right atrium)
7 . Diaphragm (pointers on right and left divisions of central tendon)
8 . Diaphragm (muscular portion)
9 . Costal cartilage VII
10 . Lower lobe left lung
11 . Pulmonary ligament
12 . Phrenic nerve left
13 . Xiphoid process (cut off)
