Carl von Gräfe's pamphlet entitled Rhinoplastik, oder die Kunst den Verlust der Nase organische zu ersetzen, published in 1818, revived the Tagliacotian method of rhinoplasty in Germany. This method, first published by Gaspare Tagliacozzi in 1597, had gone out of fashion. However the topic again became of interest to surgeons after Joseph Constantine Carpue revived the Hindu method and discussed the Tagliacotian, or Italian method, in his Account of Two Successful Operations for Restoring a Lost Nose from the Integuments of the Forehead (1816).

In addition to describing the Italian and the Indian methods, von Gräfe also described the "German" method, his variation of the Italian method. He also gave an account of the first truly successful case of blepharoplasty, performed in 1809. The copy of this work in the Lane Library is of the Latin translation by J. Hecker published the same year as the German.
