Archives, Personal Papers, and Manuscripts

The Archives was created by Lane Medical Library in 1988 to be the repository for past and future records and other materials documenting the history of Stanford University School of Medicine and its predecessors.

The records of Stanford University School of Medicine and the predecessor schools are a vital source of information about the traditions and precedents on which the School's current program is based, and on the academic principles and strategies that have been so uniquely effective.

Holdings include records, papers, publications, and other materials of the Stanford University Medical Center (San Francisco, 1908-1959; Stanford Campus, 1959-present) and of its predecessors, the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific and Cooper Medical College (approximate period, 1850-1912), as well as other manuscript collections pertaining to medicine and the life sciences.

The materials collected by the Archives fall into the following categories:

Official records, papers, and publications

  • The administrative records of the institution.
  • Records of the early clinics in San Francisco from the 1880s through the first decade of the 20th century.
  • Early hospital reports from Lane and Stanford hospitals as well as other San Francisco hospitals.
  • Records of the Stanford Convalescent Home, which later became the Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.

Professional and personal papers

  • Primarily from individuals closely connected with the School of Medicine and the predecessor schools
  • A collection of a doctor's personal papers might include reprints of his/her articles, journals, lab notebooks, research material

The collection policy of Lane Medical Archives is based on and is compatible with the collection policy of Stanford University Archives.
