Requesting complete patent documents using DocXpress
The problem
You want to download a
complete patent document but are discovering that your free patent service only allows you to download a single page at a time...
The solution
The Lane Library offers
a service that will retrieve a complete patent document if a
digital version exists, and forward it to you using Lane's
DocXpress service.
[example]
What's in it?
DocXpress' patent service delivers patent documents from all major patent offices worldwide (e.g., US, European and Japanese patent offices).
How much does it cost?
DocXpress' patent service is free to associates of the Stanford School of Medicine.
What is required?
To use DocXpress' patent service, you must have:
- A SUNet ID.
- Be associated with the Stanford School of Medicine.
- Have a (free) DocXpress account.
How does it work?
- If you have a patent number, you can log into your DocXpress and select "Patent" under "New Request" to initiate the request. Alternatively, if you don't know the patent number, contact your Lane Liaison (i.e., the librarian assigned to your department), who will perform the patent searching and retrieval on your behalf.
- The Liaison will retrieve the patent and add it to your DocXpress account.
- You will get an automatic e-mail notification from DocXpress when the document is ready.
- Following the URL in the e-mail to download the document in PDF format from your DocXpress account.
How long does it it take?
Requesters should expect a delay of a few days, although foreign or older patents documents may take significantly longer to obtain.
