What professional and personal papers does the Archives collect for the predecessor institutions?

The predecessors are
1. Medical Department of the University of the Pacific (1858-1864, 1870-1872);
2. Medical College of the Pacific (1872-1882);
3. Cooper Medical College (1882-1912); and
4. Clinics, Hospitals, and School of Nursing under the jurisdiction of the above.
They are followed by the Stanford School of Medicine, Clinic and Hospital.

The Archives collects professional and personal papers of faculty and others associated with the founding and development of the predecessor institutions.

A wide range of subject matter is acceptable. It may relate to the individual's professional contributions to education, research, and health affairs, or to personal interests. Such papers provide insights into the historical setting and influence of the institutions, and are an invaluable supplement to the official record.

Types and Formats: The following are examples of the types and formats of materials most likely to enliven the history of the institutions, and to document the careers and personalities of those whose efforts made them possible.
- Correspondence - letters and other communications (outgoing and incoming) of a professional nature relating to all aspects of the individual's academic career, personal letters to and from friends, relatives, and others
- Biographical materials - resumes, bibliographies, biographical sketches, chronologies, genealogies, interviews, memoirs, clippings, and obituaries
- Diaries, notebooks, and scrapbooks
- Teaching materials - lecture notes, syllabi, and reading lists
- Research files, notebooks, and reports
- Books, articles, and reprints
- Drafts and manuscripts
- Photographs and film

All known surviving professional and personal papers of faculty and other associated with the predecessor institutions have already been collected and preserved by either Lane Medical Library or the University Archives. Additional papers will be actively sought by the Archives staff for appraisal and possible inclusion in the Archives.

There are no restrictions to access except that irreplaceable and fragile material must be used in the archival unit.

With respect to new acquisitions, the Archives will make no agreements that restrict access indefinitely, or that impose restrictions impractical to administer.
