What database alerting services are available?

What is it for?

Most database providers make available automated services to keep you up to date with journals/articles in your area(s) of interest/research via alerting services.

Selected services

1.PubMed

One can save searches via PubMed's MyNCBI service and have these searches run automatically at specified intervals. There is a Help file on Saving your search & automatic e-mail updates as well as a 4-minute , video, available.

You can also create a PubMed search as an RSS feed.

2. ISI Web of Science
Offers alerts for Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Science Citation Index.

Three types of alerts are offered:

• Table of contents alerts for journals
• Citation alerts (will receive an e-mail alert each time an article on the list is cited in a new article)
• Saved Search Histories

To enable alerts:
1. Connect to the Web of Science database.
2. Register with an email and a password.

And don't forget...

Consider creating Google Alerts to monitor the Web overall. These are no substitute for journal alerts (journals and proprietary databases are often not indexed by Google), but can still be quite useful.
