What is BIOSIS?

BIOSIS Previews

What is it?

BIOSIS Previews, or BIOSIS, is a bibliographic database that indexes the worldwide literature of research in biological and biomedical sciences. Over 500,000 journal articles and other documents from over 6,000 journals and other sources are indexed each year. The database is produced by Thomson Scientific.

What is it for?

  • Searching for journal articles and other literature in the life sciences, including the basic biomedical sciences
  • Finding document types that are not indexed in PubMed, including published abstracts of papers presented at meetings, United States patents, books and book chapters
  • Finding articles in biomedical journals that are not indexed in PubMed
  • For a more comprehensive search of the literature when used in addition to PubMed

What is in it?

  • References with abstracts to research articles and other reports of original research
  • References to review articles, notes, letters, and short papers
  • References to books and book chapters
  • References to meeting reports and published abstracts of papers presented at meetings. In most cases the abstract itself is not reproduced in BIOSIS, but a link to the abstract may be present
  • United States patents in life sciences
  • Some biological software is indexed
  • Thorough indexing of major concepts, organisms, taxonomic groups, diseases, genes, and geographic locations discussed in each indexed document

Unique features

  • BIOSIS is the best resource for finding meeting abstracts in life sciences
  • Organism names and taxonomic groups are indexed very thoroughly
  • BIOSIS indexes hundreds of biological and biomedical journals that are not indexed in PubMed or other databases
