Men often seek psychotherapy only as a last resort--the idea of talking about their feelings to resolve problems is not on the agenda. If they do seek help, they often avoid expressing their emotions due to fear, anxiety or learned ways of relating, making progress difficult and dropout more likely. In this dramatic recreation of key moments in a 12-session course of therapy with Raymond, a man who at mid-life cannot feel excitement at the prospect of his impending fatherhood, Dr. Levant demonstrates an unconventional, yet very effective approach to working with men. At first he helps Raymond understand the socio-cultural forces that restrict the emotional lives of men, and in doing so creates a strong therapeutic bond. Then he gradually helps Raymond experience and appreciate the breadth and richness of his emotions. With these fuller resources at his disposal, Raymond is able to use Dr. Levant's support to make rapid and meaningful changes in his life. • In Part Two of The Voices of Violence series, ten experts examine the critical components of effective treatment programs for violent individuals by focusing on prison programs in California and the U.K. Beyond the creation of an environment of safety and respect, these therapists confront the patriarchal beliefs, social misperceptions, and destructive thoughts that precipitate violent responses to real or perceived threats. Vignettes of actual therapy sessions, along with interviews with incarcerated men, display the remarkable insight these individuals can achieve through treatment. Their chilling accounts of violence will challenge the empathy of even seasoned therapists, yet many of their stories are ultimately redemptive, as they learn to make use of their violent pasts by working to prevent violence in their communities. This video demonstrates vividly that conventional assumptions about crime and punishment fail to endure close scrutiny. • Peter Fonagy, PhD.
In this video, Peter Fonagy, PhD, eloquently articulates effective methods of intervening with violent behavior. He begins with child development, emphasizing that early attachment often inhibits violent tendencies. Providing viewers with a series of effective examples, Fonagy discusses the importance of mentalization or self-reflective functioning as a method for intervening with violence. He also addresses social factors affecting violence, risk factors and thoughts that drive violent behavior, and counseling violent offenders in a variety of settings, including in prisons, group therapy and individual therapy. "Scientists and educators have used the Carnegie Embryo Collection, housed at the National Museum of Health and Medicine, to define normal human embryo development for decades. A database, called the Virtual Human Embryo, has been created to provide digital serial sections of human embryos from the collection. The Embryo App uses mobile telecommunication and multimedia technologies to add interactive capabilities to the digital information, enhancing our understanding of embryo development. This App is part of the National Library of Medicine's program to fulfill the NLM's role as a provider of medical, science and health care information using mobile technologies. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development has provided support for two components of the imaging project. Scientists at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center has supported the 3D-reconstruction of the collection to add visual dynamics to the images"--Website.
