  • Carollia perspicillata, a tropical species, is the only bat that has essentially been domesticated and can be maintained and propagated in a research environment utilizing simple, inexpensive husbandry procedures. This atlas contains the first quality treatment of a bat species, and is unique in its use of NeuN staining. The NeuN preparations used selectively stain neurons in a sharp black coloration that fills not only the cell body but extends a short distance along the proximal dendrites. Thus, as distinct from the traditional nissl stains, the NeuN generates a quasi Golgi-like image of the neurons, providing a more intimate view of the neurons than can be obtained from nissl staining. In addition, the background is essentially white, facilitating high-contrast photography and allowing for gray-tone illustration without any loss of information. The NeuN procedure does not stain axons, and since it does not stain glial cells or their nuclei, the noise ordinarily generated in nissl stains by the presence of glial cells among the neurons and in the white matter is entirely eliminated. The Forebrain Atlas of the Short-tailed Fruit Bat also includes nissl stained sections for comparison. Since it is known that NeuN is not expressed in certain neurons, such as Purkinje cells, olfactory bulb mitral cells, and the cells of the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei, the nissl stained sections are also included to provide complementary views of such structures.

  • Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) has become a fundamental imaging technique for the study of many anatomical districts in different clinical situations, as it provides a fast, reliable, and accurate simultaneous evaluation of different organs, including parenchyma, hollow viscera, vessels, and bony structures. It has also equipped the radiologist with the ability to explore areas that in the last decade were largely ignored by CT, especially the coronary arteries and the colon, and to limit invasive diagnostic tests (e.g., catheter angiography) to those cases in which interventional procedures are required. The examination quality and the consequent diagnostic accuracy of MDCT are the results of an optimized study technique, which nonetheless needs to be adapted to the particular clinical situation of the patient, while bearing in mind the radiation exposure. What is it?

This shortcut (Lane proxy bookmarklet) gives you access to resources licensed by the library even when you're not coming from a Lane or a Stanford IP address.

While we'd like Lane to be your gateway to our licensed content, we recognize that links to books, articles and journals come from a variety of different sources (Google, your email, RSS reader, etc.).

How does it work?

This shortcut (Lane proxy bookmarklet) is a combination of a browser bookmark and a JavaScript application. In other words, it's a bookmark that can be programmed to do things. The Lane proxy bookmarklet simply prepends the Lane proxy URL to the current URL in your browser.

This allows you to view the URL as though you were on campus, giving you access to materials licensed for use by the Stanford academic community.

If you're not authenticated, you'll be prompted for your SUNetID and password.
