Addiction medicine 2011, SpringerThis book attempts to "bridge the gap between the explosion of neuroscientific and behavioral knowledge in the past three decades and treatment delivery in clinical practice. As such, it should fulfill the role of a comprehensive textbook that integrates addiction medicine from its scientific underpinnings to the treatment of patients in clinical settings"--Preface, p. vii.

Excited delirium syndrome 2006, CRCnetBASEA suspect, prisoner, or psychiatric patient becomes violent. The officer or hospital staff struggle to control the person, sometimes with a choke hold or hog tying. Shortly afterward, the patient dies. This illustrates excited delirium syndrome, a condition in which normal physiological changes produced by violent activity culminate in sudden cardiac death. This book discusses the effects of both legal medication and drugs of abuse on the cardiovascular system. The authors also discuss the effects of underlying disease and prevention of the syndrome, the role of the mental health professional, and the "high-risk" individual.

mhGAP intervention guide : 2010, WHOThe mhGAP-IG has been developed through an intensive process of evidence review. A WHO Guideline Development Group of international experts conducted systematic reviews to develop evidence-based recommendations. The recommendations were then converted into clearly presented stepwise interventions and then circulated among a wider range of reviewers across the world to include all the diverse contributions. The mhGAP-IG is based on the mhGAP Guidelines on interventions for mental, neurological and substance use disorders (http:// www.who.int/mental_health/mhgap/evidence/en/). Both documents will be reviewed and updated in 5 years. Any revision and update before that will be made to the online version of the document.--(excerpt, p. 1).

This Forum on Health and National Security, directed to addressing stigma and barriers to care, brought together a diverse group of leaders in order to expand horizons on these issues of important national need in times of war, disaster and terrorism. The individuals represented national leaders, educators, researchers and health care planners across mental health, health care systems, military and disaster care and the specific issues of stigma and barriers to care. The goal was for individuals who did not usually talk with each other or even know of each other's work, to hear new perspectives and create a new vantage point on this difficult topic.
