- Advances in chronic lymphocytic leukemia 2013, SpringerChronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia in the Western world. CLL has a highly varied clinical course. While advances in CLL therapy are noted, many patients still succumb to this illness. Like most progress in medicine, solid advances in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of CLL are rooted in an in-depth understanding of the basic and translational biology of CLL. In this book, CLL experts have contributed state-of-the-art summaries of various important aspects of CLL biology and have discussed the translational implication of such findings. This book, which is directed at physicians and researchers alike, aims to educate broadly and deeply. Intentionally, the many aspects and nuances of CLL clinical care that can only really be appreciated through direct patient care are not covered here, but instead, the book presents basic aspects of CLL that underlie many of the contemporary decisions that are made in CLL research and clinical settings. We hope that this book will critically inform the community and stimulate interest in CLL, which will ultimately translate into better CLL research, prognostication and therapy, with the end goal of providing a better outlook for patients afflicted with this common leukemia.

- Computational hydrodynamics of capsules and biological cells 2010, CRCnetBASE"Preface Computational biofluiddynamics addresses a diverse family of problems involving fluid flow inside and around living organisms, organs and tissue, biological cells, and other biological materials. Numerical methods combine aspects of computational mechanics, fluid dynamics, computational physics, computational chemistry and biophysics into an integrated framework that couples a broad range of scales. The goal of this edited volume is to provide a comprehensive, rigorous, and current introduction into the fundamental concepts, mathematical formulation, alternative approaches, and predictions of computational hydrodynamics of capsules and biological cells. The book is meant to serve both as a research reference and as a teaching resource. Scope The numerical methods discussed in the following eight chapters cover a broad range of possible formulations for simulating the motion of rigid particles (platelets) and the flow-induced deformation of liquid capsules and cells enclosed by viscoelastic membranes. Although some of the physical problems discussed in different chapters are similar or identical, the repetition is desirable in that solutions produced by different numerical approaches can be compared and the efficiency of alternative formulations can be assessed. The consistency of the results validates the procedures and offers several alternatives"--Provided by publisher.

- Microcirculatory effects of hemoglobin solutions 2004, KargerSolutions of stroma-free hemoglobin have been investigated for their potential as blood replacement fluids for more than 70 years. Despite many attempts to overcome their unwanted side effects through chemical modification of the hemoglobin molecule, none of the potential solutions has been approved for clinical use in Europe or the United States. In recent years, the vasoconstrictive activity of hemoglobin in the plasma was identified as the pivotal problem of hemoglobin-based blood substitutes, compromising nutritional perfusion and thus impeding oxygen unloading at the site of the microcirculation. One of the prevailing assumptions is that the precapillary vasoconstriction and the ensuing tissue underperfusion is caused by the high affinity of free hemoglobin for nitric oxide. To resolve this problem, a number of recombinant techniques involving site-directed mutagenesis as well as several chemical approaches involving polymerization and pegylation have been developed. This volume summarizes the latest research on the effects of some of these new hemoglobin solutions on the microvasculature and tissue oxygenation. It is recommended reading for all those interested in finding alternatives for donor blood in transfusion medicine, including emergency specialists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, trauma surgeons and other clinicians who are frequently confronted with blood loss and the need for blood replacement

Shortcut for iPhone
What is it?
This shortcut (Lane proxy bookmarklet) gives you access to resources licensed by the library even when you're not coming from a Lane or a Stanford IP address.
While we'd like Lane to be your gateway to our licensed content, we recognize that links to books, articles and journals come from a variety of different sources (Google, your email, RSS reader, etc.).
When installed, it will look your browser bookmark.
At the page you would like to proxy, click the "Lane Gateway to Licensed Content" to invoke it.
If Lane licenses that content, you'll get access as if you were on campus.
How does it work?
This allows you to view the URL as though you were on campus, giving you access to materials licensed for use by the Stanford academic community.
If you're not authenticated, you'll be prompted for your SUNetID and password.
Don't see the Toolbar, Bookmarks, or Links or Favorites bar?
From the "View" menu, select "Toolbars" & choose "Bookmarks Toolbar"
From the "View" menu, choose "Show Bookmarks Bar"
From the "View" menu, choose "Always Show Bookmarks Bar"
- Right-click in a clear area near the browser address bar
- In the menu, check a box next "Links" (IE7) or "Favorites" (IE8, IE9)
- Managing IE Favorites
This shortcut (Lane proxy bookmarklet) only works with resources Lane has licensed and configured to work with our proxy server.
If invoked on a resource we do not license and/or have not yet configured, you will see an error message:
The Lane proxy server cannot complete your request because this host has not been configured properly.
We make no attempt to configure our proxy server for every resource, only those we license and for which a Stanford IP address grants access.
