  • Computer-assisted surgery is a growing sub-discipline of orthopaedic surgery. A discussion on research with animals is included. Ethical dilemmas focus on reproductive technologies, stem cells, cloning, genetic testing, and designer babies. The book includes a discussion on ethics and the technologies of body enhancement and of regeneration. The importance of assessing the impact of technology on people, society, and on our planet is stressed. Particular attention is given to nanotechnologies, the environment, and issues that pertain to developing countries.   • The International Conference on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) is a unique project that brings together the regulatory authorities of Europe, Japan and the US and experts from the pharmaceutical industry in the three regions to discuss scientific and technical aspects of product registration. In Japan, the members are the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), and the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA). In Europe, the members are the EU (Representatives of the European Commission and the European Medicines Agency [EMA]), and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA). In the United States, the members are the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations (IFPMA) is the secretariat of the ICH. Additional members include Observers from WHO, European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and Canada. The Observers represent non-ICH countries and regions. This volume considers one of ICH's major categories, Safety, covering topics relating to in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical studies (Carcinogenicity Testing, Genotoxicity Testing, etc.). Since the start of the ICH process, many guidelines have been written, but in most cases there is a lack of awareness of the many issues that were addressed during the development of the consensus guidances. Further, just as it is important to understand what the guidances state, it is also important to understand the thoughts, debates, and intent of the experts involved, which are not included in the guidance documents. Why has the guideline been written as it is written, why are some topics ignored, and why have some initial guidance proposals have been deleted. These and other related questions and answers are the contents of this book, written by experts who were directly involved in writing the ICH guidances that drive drug development today.

  • Recent years have witnessed numerous advances in stem cell research that have suggested novel strategies for the treatment of the chronic and regenerative diseases that pose a growing challenge to the provision of healthcare in the 21<sup>st</sup> century. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that related disciplines have failed to keep pace with such developments, of which the immunology of transplant rejection is perhaps the most relevant to the nascent field of regenerative medicine. Indeed, given that after decades of research into the mechanisms of organ allograft rejection, we remain wholly dependent on immune suppression to ensure acceptance of foreign tissues, we might legitimately ask whether there is any reason why tissues differentiated from stem cells might not suffer the same fate. This volume seeks to address this issue by drawing on the principles of alloantigen recognition to assess the validity of early convictions that embryonic stem cell-derived tissues may prove invisible to the immune system of the host and the more recent belief that induced pluripotent stem cells, derived in a fully autologous manner, will circumvent the issue of immunogenicity. Having debunked such assumptions and established the magnitude of the immunological barriers to be overcome, this book then draws on the expertise of internationally-recognised laboratories around the world to provide a critical assessment of the likely success of applying strategies such as stem cell banking, silencing of genes that confer immunogenicity, and the induction of transplantation tolerance to overcoming the immunological barriers in the future. Indeed, it is only through reaching a consensus in the field that enduring solutions to such an intractable problem may ultimately emerge.

The book begins with an overview of the development of molecular biophysics and a brief survey of structural, physical, and chemical principles. Subsequent chapters written by experts present, with examples, the major experimental methods: optical spectroscopy, X-ray and neutron diffraction and scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and single molecule methods.     "RNA interference (RNAi) is a system within living cells that helps to control active genes and their activity level. Two types of small RNA molecules--microRNA (miRNA) and small interfering RNA (siRNA)--are central to RNA interference. The discovery of RNAi was preceded first by observations of transcriptional inhibition by antisense RNA expressed in transgenic plants and more directly by reports of unexpected outcomes in experiments performed by plant scientists in the U.S. and The Netherlands in the early 1990s. RNAi technology are used for large-scale screens that systematically shut down each gene in the cell, which can help identify the components necessary for a particular cellular process or an event such as cell division. Exploitation of the pathway is also a promising tool in biotechnology and medicine. This book reviews the selective and robust effect of RNAi on gene expression which makes it a valuable research tool, both in cell culture and in living organisms because synthetic dsRNA introduced into cells can induce suppression of specific genes of interest.   • Technology is essential to the delivery of health care but it is still only a tool that needs to be deployed wisely to ensure beneficial outcomes at reasonable costs. Among various categories of health technology, medical equipment has the unique distinction of requiring both high initial investments and costly maintenance during its entire useful life. This characteristic does not, however, imply that medical equipment is more costly than other categories, provided that it is managed properly. The foundation of a sound technology management process is the planning and acquisition of equipment, collectively called technology incorporation. This lecture presents a rational, strategic process for technology incorporation based on experience, some successful and many unsuccessful, accumulated in industrialized and developing countries over the last three decades. The planning step is focused on establishing a Technology Incorporation Plan (TIP) using data collected from an audit of existing technology, evaluating needs, impacts, costs, and benefits, and consolidating the information collected for decision making. The acquisition step implements TIP by selecting equipment based on technical, regulatory, financial, and supplier considerations, and procuring it using one of the multiple forms of purchasing or agreements with suppliers. This incorporation process is generic enough to be used, with suitable adaptations, for a wide variety of health organizations with different sizes and acuity levels, ranging from health clinics to community hospitals to major teaching hospitals and even to entire health systems. Such a broadly applicable process is possible because it is based on a conceptual framework composed of in-depth analysis of the basic principles that govern each stage of technology lifecycle. Using this incorporation process, successful TIPs have been created and implemented, thereby contributing to the improvement of healthcare services and limiting the associated expenses.

  • β-barrel outer membrane channel proteins (OMP) have great potential as robust and flexible models or components in nanotechnology. Over the last decade biotechnological techniques allowed to expand the natural characteristics of OMPs by modifying their geometry and properties without affecting the overall protein structure and stability. The present book is oriented towards a broad group of readers including graduate students and advanced researchers. The β-barrel structure serviceability for the nano-material design will be its chief topic giving a general introduction to the field of OMP based nano-component development as well as the state of the art of the involved research. On the example of the E. coli FhuA the transformation of an OMP into a tailored nano-channel to be adapted to a non-biological synthetic (i.e. polymer) environment, rendering it competitive with artificial non-biological nano-pores will be outlined specifically the design of a set of protein nano-channels with tailored geometry (diameter, length), conductance and functionality will be reported as a case study. This shortcut (Lane proxy bookmarklet) is a combination of a browser bookmark and a JavaScript application. In other words, it's a bookmark that can be programmed to do things. The Lane proxy bookmarklet simply prepends the Lane proxy URL to the current URL in your browser.

This allows you to view the URL as though you were on campus, giving you access to materials licensed for use by the Stanford academic community.

If you're not authenticated, you'll be prompted for your SUNetID and password.

Don't see the Toolbar, Bookmarks, or Links or Favorites bar?

FireFox

From the "View" menu, select "Toolbars" & choose "Bookmarks Toolbar"

Safari

From the "View" menu, choose "Show Bookmarks Bar"

Chrome

From the "View" menu, choose "Always Show Bookmarks Bar"

This shortcut (Lane proxy bookmarklet) only works with resources Lane has licensed and configured to work with our proxy server.

If invoked on a resource we do not license and/or have not yet configured, you will see an error message:

The Lane proxy server cannot complete your request because this host has not been configured properly.

We make no attempt to configure our proxy server for every resource, only those we license and for which a Stanford IP address grants access.
