Summary: This book systemically presents the latest research on renal fibrosis, covering all the major topics in the field, including the possible mechanisms, biomarkers, and strategies for prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Due to its high prevalence, CKD represents a huge global economic and social burden. Irrespective of the initial causes, CKD progresses to end stage kidney disease (ESKD) due to renal fibrosis, which is characterized by glomerulosclerosis, tubule atrophy and atresia, and the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the kidney. Unfortunately, an estimated 1%-2% of the adult population living with CKD will need renal replacement therapy at some point as a result of ESKD. As such, strategies for preventing or slowing CKD progression to ESKD are of utmost importance, and studies aiming to understand the mechanisms of renal fibrosis have been the focus of intensive research. Recently, novel insights into the pathophysiological processes have furthered our understanding of the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis, and more importantly, promoted studies on the early diagnosis and treatment of CKD. This book draws lessons from the extensive, state-of-the-art research in this field, elaborating the new theories and new techniques to offer readers a detailed and comprehensive understanding of renal fibrosis and as well as inspiration for future research directions.

Summary: To promote effectiveness and minimize possible toxicity, the dosage of certain medications must be adjusted in persons with compromised kidney function. Failure to enjoin appropriate dosage adjustments in patients with abnormal or rapidly changing kidney function continues to lead to reports of drug toxicity involving a broad array of renally eliminated medications. This updated edition captures nearly 200 new drugs that have been approved by the FDA since the initial publication of Renal Pharmacotherapy. It also covers new evidence that has emerged regarding the need to adjust dosage of certain older medications that are eliminated by the kidneys. Additionally, it presents new data that are being continuously derived in the areas of patient-specific dose individualization for drugs of all types. Comprehensive, convenient, and evidence-based, this reference closes several identified knowledge gaps and will continue to be the leading collection of dosage recommendations for patients with compromised kidney function.

Summary: This book eases the task of converting research work into a manuscript, and covers the recent developments in publishing that often stump budding researchers. Few researchers in the biomedical sciences are trained in the essential skills of reporting their results, and they seek help in writing a paper that will be acceptable for publication in the 'right' journal, and in presenting their results 'effectively' at a meeting. As well as covering the basic aspects of preparing manuscripts for publication, the book discusses best practices and issues relating to the publication of biomedical research, including topics such as peer-review, authorship, plagiarism, conflicts of interest, publication misconduct, electronic publishing and open-access journals. With more than two decades of experience in conducting workshops on writing scientific papers, the editors have brought together the expertise of 29 authors from seven countries to produce this one-stop guide to publishing research in biomedical sciences. This book is intended for young researchers who are beginning their careers and wish to hone their skills and understand the rigors of research writing and publishing.

Summary: This book provides an up-to-date overview of the various reproductive systems of a variety of aquatic animals, from invertebrates to fishes. While all terrestrial animals use internal fertilization, aquatic animals have diverse reproductive systems. Some are internal fertilizers with or without mating, but many perform external fertilization. Because of this diversity, the reproductive systems of aquatic animals represent excellent models for the study of adaptive evolution and the species specificity of fertilization. In addition, many aquatic animals, including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, are important as fishery and aquaculture resources. In this book, up-and-coming researchers examine reproductive systems in representative aquatic animals, covering both the basic knowledge and late-breaking results. Reproduction in Aquatic Animals: From Basic Biology to Aquaculture Technology will be of interest to graduate and postgraduate students in biology and agricultural sciences, as well as to researchers and technicians in the fields of reproductive biology and fishery science and to non-academics.

Summary: This book summarizes the contributions at an April 2016 conference held at Albany Medical College, Reproductive Ethics: New Challenges and Conversations. Reproductive ethics does not suffer from a lack of challenging issues, yet a few "hot button" issues such as abortion and surrogacy seem to attract most of the attention, while other issues and dilemmas remain relatively underdeveloped in bioethics literature. The goal of this book is to explore and expand the range of topics addressed in reproductive ethics. This is a multi-disciplinary book bringing together philosophers, clinicians, sociologists, anthropologists, and other scholars whose research or clinical interests touch reproductive issues. The results of this compilation are a comprehensive and unique discussion of the evolving issues in the rapidly changing field. The majority of the popular reproductive ethics anthologies were published at least 10 years ago. The field of reproductive ethics would benefit from a new anthology that addresses some of the perennial dilemmas in reproductive ethics (e.g. abortion, sex selection) from updated perspectives and that also covers new technologies that have emerged only in the last few years, such as social egg freezing.

Summary: This book is the second collection of essays on reproductive ethics from Drs. Campo-Engelstein and Burcher. This volume is unique in that it is both timely and includes several essays on new technologies, while also being a comprehensive review of most of the major questions in the field, from racial disparities in reproductive healthcare to gene editing and the possibility of the creation of a transhuman species. The scholars writing these essays are pre-eminent in their fields, and their backgrounds are quite varied, including philosophers, anthropologists, physicians, and professors of law. Reproductive ethics remains an underdeveloped area of bioethics despite the recent technological breakthroughs that carry both great promise and potential threats. Building on the first volume of work from a conference held just over one year ago, this new collection of essays from a conference held April 2017 continues this discussion as well as provides ethical insights and reviews of these emerging technologies. The ethical questions swirling around human reproduction are both old and new, but the conference presentations, and the essays derived from them, focus on new ways of appreciating old arguments such as the ethics of abortion, as well as new ways of seeing new technologies such as CRISPR and mitochondrial transfer.

Summary: Black women have higher rates of premature birth than other women in America. This cannot be simply explained by economic factors, with poorer women lacking resources or access to care. Even professional, middle-class black women are at a much higher risk of premature birth than low-income white women in the United States. Dána-Ain Davis looks into this phenomenon, placing racial differences in birth outcomes into a historical context, revealing that ideas about reproduction and race today have been influenced by the legacy of ideas which developed during the era of slavery. While poor and low-income black women are often the "mascots" of premature birth outcomes, this book focuses on professional black women, who are just as likely to give birth prematurely. Drawing on an impressive array of interviews with nearly fifty mothers, fathers, neonatologists, nurses, midwives, and reproductive justice advocates, Dána-Ain Davis argues that events leading up to an infant's arrival in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and the parents' experiences while they are in the NICU, reveal subtle but pernicious forms of racism that confound the perceived class dynamics that are frequently understood to be a central factor of premature birth. The book argues not only that medical racism persists and must be considered when examining adverse outcomes--as well as upsetting experiences for parents--but also that NICUs and life-saving technologies should not be the only strategies for improving the outcomes for black pregnant women and their babies. Davis makes the case for other avenues, such as community-based birthing projects, doulas, and midwives, that support women during pregnancy and labor are just as important and effective in avoiding premature births and mortality. -- Provided by publisher.

Summary: It has become increasingly accepted that important digital data must be retained and shared in order to preserve and promote knowledge, advance research in and across all disciplines of scholarly endeavor, and maximize the return on investment of public funds. To meet this challenge, colleges and universities are adding data services to existing infrastructures by drawing on the expertise of information professionals who are already involved in the acquisition, management and preservation of data in their daily jobs. Data services include planning and implementing good data management practices, thereby increasing researchers' ability to compete for grant funding and ensuring that data collections with continuing value are preserved for reuse. This volume provides a framework to guide information professionals in academic libraries, presses, and data centers through the process of managing research data from the planning stages through the life of a grant project and beyond. It illustrates principles of good practice with use-case examples and illuminates promising data service models through case studies of innovative, successful projects and collaborations.

Summary: Soil and water salinity is a major challenge for the agricultural community and policy makers in terms of meeting the burgeoning populations demand for food and other agricultural commodities. In coastal regions, climate change and sea level rise will aggravate the problem with more and more areas becoming saline due to intrusion of sea water. As such there is a pressing need for modern tools and innovative techniques for the identification of salty soils and poor-quality waters, crop production, soil reclamation and lowering the water table in waterlogged areas. Tackling next-generation problems such as contamination of soil and underground water due to fluoride and arsenic, as well as developing multi-stress tolerant crops is also a high priority. Further, techniques for domesticating halophytes, mangrove-based aquacultures, using seaweed cultures as agricultural crops and integrated farming systems need to be perfected. This book addresses all these aspects in detail, highlighting the diverse solutions to tackle the complex problem of salinity and waterlogging and safer management of poor-quality waters. With chapters written by leading experts, it is a valuable resource for researchers planning future investigations, policy makers, farmers and other stakeholders, and for students wanting insights into vital issues of environment.

    Hugh P. McKenna.
Summary: Research for research sake is no longer tenable or affordable; to be valuable to society, research must have impact! This textbook takes the reader on a journey from how the UK Research Excellence Framework assesses impact to real examples of outstanding research impact case studies. Along the way, Prof. Hugh McKenna describes and explains the case for research impact, the challenges, the link between research impact and evidence informed practice, achieving impact through changing policy and engaging with the public, how researchers can make their research findings more impactful and how research impact is assessment nationally and internationally It is written in an easily accessible and understandable style, with reflective exercises amply distributed throughout its pages and helpful guides helping to engage readers and notably health professionals who are often turned off by the normal heavy research tomes. This book makes the complex simple and the wearisome fascinating. The short chapters are interesting and authoritative and can be read on a 'standalone' basis, allowing readers to 'dip in and out'. From his experience in various countries, the author has a unique insight into what research impact is, how it is assessed and how and where research findings can have the most benefit. The stimulus for this book has been the excellent feedback that the author has received from health professionals, students and fellow researchers. There is always a risk that good knowledge and experience do not transfer well into a good textbook. In Research Impact: Guidance on Advancement, Achievement and Assessment, nothing has been lost in the transition. The book will be of great interest to many health researchers from nursing to midwifery to pharmacy, medicine or any allied health professional, but also to any research manager in all professions who want their research to bring positive change to society, culture, the economy, health and quality of life. It will be of particular interest to those who want to understand the difference between research impacts that are weak and those that are outstanding and how such assessments are made.

    Contents:
Chapter 1. Research Impact: the what, why, when and how
Chapter 2. Research Impact: drafting case studies
Chapter 3. Research Impact: How to Prepare and Submit Case Studies
Chapter 4. Research Impact: How Assessors Prepare and Assess
Chapter 5. Research Impact: The Challenges
Chapter 6. Research Impact: Engaging with the Public and Policymakers
Chapter 7. Research Impact: The Link to Evidence Informed Practice
Chapter 8. Research Impact: An Analysis of Approaches in Health Sciences

Summary: Utilizing a practical, high-yield presentation, this textbook is a comprehensive review of the most common shoulder and elbow diagnoses and management strategies. It allows easy access to pertinent information for residents and fellows while preparing for rounds, the clinic and the operating room and also aides residents studying for their yearly in-training exam (OITE). Each topic is organized in a consistent, bulleted format so that the information flows in a logic manner: history, physical examination, imaging (when and what to order), and the most appropriate treatment algorithm. The most common classification systems are emphasized and illustrated, and treatment algorithms are further organized into non-operative and operative and include surgical approaches as well as the risks and complications of surgical intervention. The shoulder and elbow are covered in their own exclusive sections, with each chapter discussing the unique diagnostic considerations for each anatomic structure and the types of injuries to expect. Topics in the shoulder section include osteoarthritis, rotator cuff arthropathy and tears, instability, stiffness, SLAP tears and biceps tendinitis, and fractures of the clavicle and scapula. Topics in the elbow section include biceps and triceps rupture, lateral and medical epicondylitis, instability and stiffness, and elbow fractures - distal humerus, Monteggia, the terrible triad and more. Case material, key points and takeaways, and question-and-answer elements are included to enhance the text's overall utility. There is currently no textbook on the shoulder and elbow tailored specifically for orthopedic residents, fellows and senior medical students. The Resident's Guide to Shoulder and Elbow Surgery therefore provides a much-needed resource for early-career clinicians and surgeons.

Summary: With an emphasis on set-up and execution and lessons learned from expert practitioners, this concise, practical guide for residents and fellows presents the essentials for both common and complex spine surgery. Proceeding anatomically from the cervical to the sacroiliac, and including chapters on spinal tumors, infection and revision surgery, nearly 40 different procedures are highlighted, from corpectomy, arthroplasty and laminectomy to percutaneous screws, decompression and fusion. Chapters include all the information a resident will need to know: indications and contraindications, imaging and diagnosis, OR set-up and instrumentation selection, the specific operative technique, post-operative protocols, and clinical pearls and pitfalls. Radiographs and full-color intraoperative photographs accompany each procedure. Whether suturing dura or performing a lateral interbody fusion, spinal surgery is a technical pursuit, and having a firm grasp of the details can ultimately determine the procedure's success. Written and edited by veterans in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery, The Resident's Guide to Spine Surgery is just the detailed, user-friendly resource for up-and-coming clinicians looking to develop and expand their surgical expertise. .

Summary: "These days it's hard to count on the world outside. So it's vital to grow strengths inside like grit, gratitude, and compassion--the key to resilience, and to lasting well-being in a changing world. True resilience is much more than enduring terrible conditions. We need resilience every day to raise a family, work at a job, cope with stress, deal with health problems, navigate issues with others, heal from old pain, and simply keep on going. With his trademark blend of neuroscience, mindfulness, and positive psychology, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Rick Hanson shows you how to develop twelve vital inner strengths hardwired into your own nervous system. Then no matter what life throws at you, you'll be able to feel less stressed, pursue opportunities with confidence, and stay calm and centered in the face of adversity. This practical guide is full of concrete suggestions, experiential practices, personal examples, and insights into the brain. It includes effective ways to interact with others and to repair and deepen important relationships. Warm, encouraging, and down-to-earth, Dr. Hanson's step-by-step approach is grounded in the science of positive neuroplasticity. He explains how to overcome the brain's negativity bias, release painful thoughts and feelings, and replace them with self-compassion, self-worth, joy, and inner peace"--Goodreads.com.

Summary: This volume will review different classes of "target" drugs that have been developed, approved, or are under investigation in the field of lymphoma therapy. The discussion will not only be on the understanding of the mechanisms of action or clinical response of those agents, but also help the reader to understand the nature of lymphoma biology in patients who relapse or are refractor after exposure to those drugs. Contributors will discuss what is currently known about mechanisms of tumor-related or host-related resistance, and how to overcome this resistance. This understanding is crucial given the dismal outcomes of patients with relapsed or refractory lymphomas. The book provides a unique opportunity to review and reflect on the recent successes and pitfalls of the modern lymphoma therapy era.

Summary: This book covers interpretation of visual fields by Humphrey and Octopus perimeters and discussion of Humphrey visual fields in a variety of ocular disorders. It examines dilemmas faced by an ophthalmologist while evaluating visual fields which do not match with the clinical picture. Glaucoma, the commonest condition for visual field investigation is discussed in detail. Logical reasoningfor incorporating perimetry in glaucoma management with a clear understanding of the challenges in its interpretation is delved into. The book progresses to advanced glaucoma and glaucoma progression. It discusses a systematic evaluation of various parts of the visual field so that the reader can make a calculated management plan for their patient. Each chapter attempts to clearly enunciate factors that help in the diagnosis and features which may be confused with other conditions. Fields which help diagnosing early, advanced glaucoma and glaucoma progression with images and methods of ensuring reasonable diagnostic accuracy are included. The book incorporates separate chapters on ocular conditions which also mimic visual field defects of glaucoma with detailed modes of correct diagnosis, diagnostic dilemmas arising from retinal, macular, vascular, visual pathway lesions mimicking visual field defects of glaucoma or while coexisting with glaucoma, supported by algorithms to achieve a quick diagnosis in a busy OPD without missing the clinical findings and by using minimal investigative modalities. This book helps clinicians to prevent over diagnosis or under diagnosis of glaucoma and helps diagnose cases with morbidities causing visual field defects.

Summary: The book blends basic and clinical research on respiratory carcinogensis. The contributions tackle a variety of respiratory-related cancers, notably non-small cell lung carcinoma, pleural mesothelioma, mediastinal tumors, or larynx cancer. The focus is on the search for novel molecular markers, derived from easily accessible tissues in clinical settings, such as the serum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, which could help diagnose cancer at an early stage and have a prognostic therapeutic value. The transcriptional mechanisms which endow cells with the capacity for unlimited proliferation are considered, with silencing of tumor suppressor genes is the exemplar. Chapters provide insight into a variety of cancer-related disorders of the respiratory tract, novel ways of differential diagnosis and treatment. The aim is to bring the current clinical procedures into alignment with the latest basic research findings. The book is a text for respiratory researchers, clinicians, and pathologists.

Summary: "Respiratory physiology involves a number of areas, all of which are complex. These areas include the structure and function of the lung, the mechanics of breathing, gas exchange within the lung, oxygen uptake/transport and delivery, control of carbon dioxide and ventilation. Both pathologies of the lung itself as well as other disorders (cardiac disease, neurological disease, haematological disease, musculoskeletal disorders etc) have varying effects on the different aspects of pulmonary physiology. In addition, advanced respiratory treatments such as mechanical ventilation may also have effects on all of these. Respiratory terminology encompasses both anatomical and physiological descriptors, as well as terms used in investigations and respiratory management. For the non-pulmonologist or intensivist, much of this terminology may be confusing. Many of the terms sound similar and may seem to be used interchangeably"-- Provided by publisher.

Summary: The tracheobronchial tree is open to the environment surrounding the body. Respiration has thus the essential bearing on general morbidity, vulnerability to disease and immunity. Further, respiratory function shapes the neuropsychological responses to succumbing to disease, controls the mind-to-body interaction and sets the perception of quality of life. The chapters of this book deal with the preventable drivers of poor respiratory health, the role of health information technology, the improvement in health care delivery and the integration of respiratory health and behavioral health services. Innovative strategies to promote prevention, care coordination and care integration as well as to align disease acceptance and quality of life measures also are tackled. Maintaining respiratory health is of rising research interest as a way of preventing a disease or a non pharmacological therapeutic succor. The book will be of interest to clinicians, family practitioners and medical researchers.

Summary: This book covers the up-to-date advancement of respiratory monitoring in ventilation support as well as detecting the physiological responses to therapeutic interventions to avoid complications. Mechanical ventilation nowadays remains the cornerstone in life saving in critically ill patients with and without respiratory failure. However, conclusive evidences show that mechanical ventilation can also cause lung damage, specifically, in terms of ventilator-induced lung injury. Respiratory monitoring encloses a series of physiological and pathophysiological measurements, from basic gas exchange and ventilator wave forms to more sophisticated diaphragm function and lung volume assessments. The progress of respiratory monitoring has always been accompanied by advances in technology. However, how to properly conduct the procedures and correctly interpret the data requires clear definition. The book introduces respiratory monitoring techniques and data analysis, including gas exchange, respiratory mechanics, thoracic imaging, lung volume measurement, and extra-vascular lung water measurement in the initial part. How to interpret the acquired and derived parameters and to illustrate their clinical applications is presented thoroughly. In the following part, the applications of respiratory monitoring in specific diseases and conditions is introduced, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, obstructive pulmonary diseases, patient-ventilator asynchrony, non-invasive ventilation, brain injury with increased intracranial pressure, ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction, and weaning from mechanical ventilation. This book is intended primarily for ICU physicians and other practitioners including respiratory therapists, ICU nurses and trainees who come into contact with patients under mechanical ventilation. This book also provides guidance for clinical researchers who take part in respiratory and mechanical ventilation researches.

Summary: This book presents pulmonary outcomes of prematurity, from their emergence in infancy through to their consequences in adulthood. With an increasing number of preterm births and more infants surviving, there is now a larger population of adults with lung disease originating in infancy requiring specialized care. Looking at the whole group of preterm infants, not just those with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, this text covers a wide spectrum of pulmonary outcomes, including: pulmonary hypertension, wheezing, and alterations in sleep. The chapter authors focus on critically appraising what is and is not known about each outcome and suggest key questions that still need to be answered. Respiratory Outcomes in Preterm Infants: Sequelae from Infancy through Adulthood is an ideal reference for the multidisciplinary group that cares for these preterm infants and the adults they become, including: neonatologists, pediatric pulmonologists, pediatricians, adult pulmonologists, primary care physicians, nurses, and fellows.

    Tricia Hersey.
Summary: Disrupt and push back against capitalism and white supremacy. In this book, Tricia Hersey, aka The Nap Bishop, encourages us to connect to the liberating power of rest, daydreaming, and naps as a foundation for healing and justice. What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine-level pace -- feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted. Our worth does not reside in how much we produce, especially not for a system that exploits and dehumanizes us. Rest, in its simplest form, becomes an act of resistance and a reclaiming of power because it asserts our most basic humanity. We are enough. The systems cannot have us. Rest Is Resistance is rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, womanism, somatics, and Afrofuturism. With captivating storytelling and practical advice, all delivered in Hersey's lyrical voice and informed by her deep experience in theology, activism, and performance art, Rest Is Resistance is a call to action, a battle cry, a field guide, and a manifesto for all of us who are sleep deprived, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of Grind Culture.

Summary: This book offers a comprehensive set of principles that lead to ideal outcomes following treatment for Head and Neck Cancers, especially in those patients who need major reconstructive procedures. It goes beyond the scope of basic Head and Neck Cancer textbooks, or of reconstructive surgery texts, in that the essential focus is on optimal outcomes beyond fundamental evaluation and management. The book addresses a range of essential aspects: the chapters on Functional and Aesthetic considerations underscore crucial basics that should be understood by all surgeons, while other chapters relevant to all members of the Head and Neck team address Imaging, Robotics, Radiation Morbidities, Prosthetics and Quality of Life. Throughout the book, particular attention is given to high-quality photographs, flow diagrams and tables wherever possible, combined with crisp writing to achieve effective communication. The book is unique in the completeness of its approach: from the time of initial presentation, to the time patients resume their normal lives. Although written primarily for surgeons, its value extends to all members of the multi-disciplinary team managing Head and Neck Cancer patients today.

Summary: Resuscitation is a two-stage process comprising the achievement/maintenance of spontaneous circulation and post-resuscitation management. The approach is complex and multifaceted and entails the integration of new physiological insights, pharmacological options, and technological advances. The purpose of this volume, written by top experts in the field, is to promote, share, and disseminate new advances in resuscitation and post-resuscitation care. The issues addressed are wide ranging and of great topical interest or controversy. They include priorities of intervention, quality of resuscitation, use of mechanical supports, new defibrillation strategies, prevention of organ damage, strategies in cases of sudden cardiac death, new pharmacological treatments, and post-resuscitation care, including temperature management and prediction and improvement of outcome after cardiac arrest. Particular attention is devoted to up-to-date evidence from the most recent experimental and clinical trials on resuscitation science and to gold standard evidence-based resuscitation and post-resuscitation treatments and interventions. In addition, organizational models and integrated care systems for trauma are considered, and critical care education and the process of guideline development are reviewed.

Summary: Reprogenetic technologies, which combine the power of reproductive techniques with the tools of genetic science and technology, promise prospective parents a remarkable degree of control to pick and choose the likely characteristics of their offspring. Not only can they select embryos with or without particular genetically-related diseases and disabilities but also choose embryos with non-disease related traits such as sex. Prominent authors such as Agar, Buchanan, DeGrazia, Green, Harris, Robertson, Savulescu, and Silver have flocked to the banner of reprogenetics. For them, increased reproductive choice and reduced suffering through the elimination of genetic disease and disability are just the first step. They advocate use of these technologies to create beings who enjoy longer and healthier lives, possess greater intellectual capacities, and are capable of more refined emotional experiences. Indeed, Harris and Savulescu in particular take reprogenetic technologies to be so valuable to human beings that they have insisted that their use is not only morally permissible but morally required. Rethinking Reprogenetics challenges this mainstream view with a contextualised, gender-attentive philosophical perspective. De Melo-Martín demonstrates that you do not have to be a Luddite, social conservative, or religious zealot to resist the siren song of reprogenetics. Pointing out the flawed nature of the arguments put forward by the technologies' proponents, Rethinking Reprogenetics reveals the problematic nature of the assumptions underpinning current evaluations of these technologies and offers a framework for a more critical and sceptical assessment. -- Provided by publisher.

    Reprogenetic technologies : an overview
Procreative liberty : the moral permissibility of reprogenetics

Summary: This volume presents a novel logic-based, simplified understanding and approach to the external nose and face for aesthetics, airway, and sleep treatments that have mostly been under-recognized in the past. Key features of the text include an engineers approach to simple rhinoplasty, (Release, Resize, Reposition, Reinforce) instead of the typical step-wise procedure algorithm. It also includes a logical explanation of how facial skeletal anatomy is the true cause of sleep apnea and aesthetic deformity with the physics and evidence of how this works, and a review of conventional rhinoplasty/facial structural treatments, with an analysis of why these are flawed and need improvement. Finally, rhinoplasty surgical strategy is discussed using a Rhinoplasty Compass(TM) diagram. Rethinking Rhinoplasty and Facial Surgery appeals to the surgeon who has grown frustrated with the aesthetic and breathing results of the conventional treatment paradigm. It also appeals to the otolaryngologist, plastic or oral surgeon who avoids working on the external nose and nasal valve because of the perceived complexity of graft-style rhinoplasty or oversimplicity and limitations of basic septoplasty and turbinate reduction. This book provides a hybrid approach to the nose and face that provides more reliable and straightforward outcomes via an understanding of framework.

    Contents:
Part I Toward an understanding of structure/function interaction
Chapter 1 The problem we face: The "compartmentalized" conventional view of facial/nasal anatomy
Chapter 2 The invisible forces in our nasal airway: Air flow and cavity negative pressure
Chapter 3 Nasal function and Sleep Disorders
Chapter 4 The human facial skeleton: influence on the airway and aesthetics?
Part II Rhinoplasty Strategy and Tactics
Chapter 5 A structural model to systematically understand nasal framework: The Rhinoplasty Compass
Chapter 6 Modeling to evaluate conventional procedures
Chapter 7 Rhinoplasty Strategy and Tactics using the Rhinoplasty Compass
Chapter 8 Complementary procedures to the Framework Strategy (The Canopy Layer)
Chapter 9 Strategies for addressing mouth-breathing treatment with an "Adequate" nose
Chapter 10 Breaking the barriers between specialties: Toward a universal understanding of anatomy and function.

Summary: This is a concise how-to of successfully treating previously deemed "untreatable" retinal and optic nerve conditions with stem cell therapies. Based on the results of 11 years of experience treating approximately 600 patients, this text will serve as a template for others to develop similar stem cell based treatments in their specialty. Author, Jeffrey N. Weiss, MD is specifically poised to offer dependable insight on stem cell surgery for both the retina and the optic nerve, having performed the first retinal stem cell surgery in 2010, with Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved studies that are registered with the National Institute of Health (NIH), and listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. Featuring all original work from Dr. Jeffrey Weiss's specialization in stem cell ophthalmology, this book is primarily written for ophthalmologists, but structured so that specialists across disciplines can take the model presented and create their own studies and clinical trials using stem cell therapies.

Summary: "This book will contain the proceedings of the XV International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2012). A majority of those who will speak and present posters at the meeting will contribute to this volume. The blinding diseases of inherited retinal degenerations have no treatments, and age-related macular degeneration has no cures, despite the fact that it is an epidemic among the elderly, with 1 in 3-4 affected by the age of 70. The RD Symposium will focus on the exciting new developments aimed at understanding these diseases and providing therapies for them. Since most major scientists in the field of retinal degenerations attend the biennial RD Symposia, they are known by most as the “best” and “most important” meetings in the field. The volume will present representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy."--Publisher's website.

While advances in these areas of retinal degenerations will be described, there will be many new topics that either were in their infancy or did not exist at the time of the last RD Symposium, RD2014. These include the role of inflammation and immunity, as well as other basic mechanisms, in age-related macular degeneration, several new aspects of gene therapy, and revolutionary new imaging and functional testing that will have a huge impact on the diagnosis and following the course of retinal degenerations, as well as to provide new quantitative endpoints for clinical trials. The retina is an approachable part of the central nervous system (CNS), and there is a major interest in neuroprotective and gene therapy for CNS diseases and neurodegenerations, in general. It should be noted that with successful and exciting initial clinical trials in neuroprotective and gene therapy, including the restoration of sight in blind children, the retinal degeneration therapies are leading the way towards new therapeutic measures for neurodegenerations of the CNS. Many of the successes recently reported in these areas of retinal degeneration sprang from collaborations established at previous RD Symposia, and many of those will be reported at the RD2018 meeting and included in the proposed volume. We anticipate the excitement of those working in the field and those afflicted with retinal degenerations will be reflected in the volume.

Summary: Classically, photo atlases of retinal dystrophies have been divided into sections that describe and depict a particular retinal finding or disease, after which a differential diagnosis of potential diseases or mutated genes is provided. However, given the rapid improvement in molecular diagnostics, and the exponential increase in our understanding of the phenotypes caused by each mutated gene, the paradigm has changed. Physicians are now more interested in the variable expressivity associated with mutations in each individual gene. Therefore, Retinal Dystrophy Gene Atlas catalogs the different phenotypes that have been reported with each mutated gene. Each section describes a gene and its known clinical phenotypes and features of disease, along with retinal photos of affected patients. Written by prominent retinal dystrophy specialists from the largest dystrophy centers worldwide, Retinal Dystrophy Gene Atlas contains more than 80 chapters, each of which describes the clinical and photographic manifestations of a specific gene. The chapters include stunning clinical color photographs of the retina, autofluorescence imaging, electrophysiologic findings, and cross-sectional imaging. Retinal Dystrophy Gene Atlas serves as a resource to aid genetic diagnosis in patients with retinal dystrophies.

Summary: This book offers a comprehensive overview of performing return-on-investment (ROI) analyses for healthcare quality improvement (QI). In the United States, healthcare policy regarding physician and facility payment/reimbursement is steadily trending towards the use of "value-based" systems and away from the traditional "fee-for-service" (FFS) payment mechanisms. Healthcare professionals and organizations who have previously focused on quality metrics are now finding themselves burdened with having to define and assess value metrics, without much guidance or assistance. This volume aims to be a guide and a reference for healthcare professionals tasked with estimating and establishing ROI for QI. Chapters describe the general framework for how to perform QI; establish standard definitions of important terms, concepts, and calculations; and provide specific instructions for how to complete each step of an ROI analysis. These include: selecting a QI initiative and identifying the associated metrics, establishing measurable, monetizable, and attributable costs and benefits, determining the appropriate scope and perspective, calculating ROI and related metrics (payback period, benefit-to-cost ratio, etc.), comparing with established benchmarks or previously published results, and interpreting the results for the intended audience. In addition, chapters offer examples of real studies (or hypothetical studies of real situations), as well as templates for several of the necessary activities that readers can leverage for their own use. Return on Investment for Healthcare Quality Improvement is a must-have resource for healthcare providers, administrators, and other professionals who work in healthcare organizations, hospitals and other healthcare settings, health systems, and residency programs seeking to obtain outside funding, as well as policy makers and administrators of federal programs.

    Contents:
    Chapter 1. Introduction
Chapter 2. Planning an ROI Analysis
    Chapter 3. Initial Steps
    Chapter 4. Costs and Benefits
Chapter 5. Performing Base Case and Sensitivity Analyses
    Chapter 6. Interpretation and Presentation
    Chapter 7. Hypothetical Case Studies
    Chapter 8. Tips and Templates

Summary: Return to training (RTT) and return to play (RTP) decisions making process in football are currently based on expert's opinion. However, there are no consensus guidelines on evidence-based decision-making. This book provides a framework for evidence-based decision-making both in RTT and RTP following lower-limb muscle injuries sustained in football. Based on the Italian Consensus Conference (2019) on return-to-play after lower limb muscle injury in football, it provides a list of RTT and RTP criteria after such injuries compiled by orthopedic surgeons, sports physicians, radiologists, rehabilitation physicians, sport physiologists, general surgeons, family physicians, physiotherapists, physical trainers and psychologists working in elite football in Italy. The book identifies the main criteria for RTT and RTP following injuries involving the most important muscle groups, i.e. quadriceps, hamstring, hip adductor, hip external rotator, iliopsoas and soleus-gastrocnemius. As such it is a valuable reference resource for practitioners making RTT and RTP decisions making process.

    Contents:
1 The return to training general(RTT) principles
2 The return to play (RTP) general principles
3 RTT and RTP after quadriceps injury
4 RTT and RTP after hamstring injury
5 RTT and RTP after adductors injuries
6 RTT and RTP after external hip rotators injury
7 RTT and RTP after soleus-gastrocnemius muscle injuries.

Summary: The wealth of information provided in this unique text will enable orthopedic surgeons, medical practitioners, physical therapists, and trainers to ensure that athletes who suffer anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, or who require major knee operations for other reasons, have the best possible chance of safely resuming sporting activity at their desired level without subsequent problems. Divided into seven thematic sections, the coverage is wide-ranging and encompasses common barriers to return to sport, return to sport decision-based models, and the complete spectrum of optimal treatment for ACL injuries, including preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation. Advanced training concepts are explained in detail, with description of sports-specific programs for soccer, basketball, and tennis. Readers will find detailed guidance on objective testing for muscle strength, neuromuscular function, neurocognitive function, and cardiovascular fitness, as well as validated assessments to identify and manage psychological issues. In addition, return to sport considerations after meniscus surgery, patellofemoral realignment, articular cartilage procedures, and knee arthroplasty are discussed. Generously illustrated and heavily referenced, Return to Sport after ACL Reconstruction and Other Knee Operations is a comprehensive resource for all medical professionals and support staff working with athletes and active patients looking to get back in the game with confidence.

Summary: The book recognizes that throughout the scientific, medical, and economic communities, new tests incorporating biomarkers are needed to improve the diagnosis of patients suffering from metabolic disorders. The early identification of those at risk of developing obesity will help to place these individuals on the best treatment course as early as possible for improved treatment outcomes. This will also help to cut costs incurred by the healthcare services. For all of this to occur, new research efforts are needed to identify novel biomarkers that can be used to predict the disease in the presymptomatic stage, for disease monitoring and for prediction of treatment response. It is also possible that new drug targets can be identified using these approaches which, in turn, can lead to the development of new treatment approaches. This volume also includes a series of reviews on biomarker discovery and usage in the study of diseases marked by perturbations in metabolism. It will describe the pros and cons of the various approaches and cover the successes and failures in this important research field.

Summary: Aging is an inevitable part of life and is becoming a worldwide social, economic and health problem. This is mainly due to the fact that the increasing proportion of individuals in the advanced age category have a higher probability of developing age-related disorders, such as type II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, sarcopenia, and neurodegenerative conditions. New therapeutic approaches are still needed to decrease or slow the effects of such diseases. Advances in -omic technologies, such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, have significantly advanced our understanding of disease in multiple medical areas, as the analysis of multiple molecular networks has simultaneously provided a more integrated view of disease pathways. It is hoped that emerging hits from these analyses might be prioritized for further screening as potential novel drug targets for increasing the human healthspan in line with the lifespan. In turn, this will lead to new therapeutic strategies as well as drug development projects by the pharmaceutical industry. This book presents a series of reviews describing studies that have resulted in identification of new potential drug targets for age-related disorders. Much of this information has come from -omic comparisons of healthy and disease states or from testing the effects of new therapeutic approaches. Authored by experts from around the globe, each chapter is presented in the context of specific chronic diseases or therapeutic strategies. This book is designed for researchers in the areas of aging and chronic disease, as well as clinical scientists, physicians and stakeholders in major drug companies.

Summary: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is one of the most common procedures performed in sports medicine centers. However, these procedures can carry a long-term failure rate as high as 5-15%%, and when these procedures fail, revision is significantly more complex. Considerable factors need to be assessed in patients that are indicated for surgery, as revisions carry a higher failure rate and potentially less optimal outcomes and return to sport and activity. These factors include, but are not limited to, the status of the meniscus, overall alignment, graft options, placement of prior implants or tunnels, collateral ligament quality, and whether or not the revision must be staged into two procedures. This text provides a comprehensive, case-based presentation of the most efficient and practical treatment algorithms for patients in need of revision ACL repair and reconstruction. Opening chapters discuss the initial patient work-up, radiography, surgical indications, graft options, and pre-operative considerations and preparations. The main portion of the book then describes both common factors leading to revision surgery as well as the surgical techniques themselves, illustrated via plentiful operative photos and vivid clinical case material. The management of osteolysis, ligamentous laxity, extra-articular tenodesis, plane correction, and meniscus deficiency, among others, are discussed in detail. Special populations, such as the pediatric patient, the elite athlete and the female athlete, are discussed as well. Shedding light on this challenging surgical repair, Revision Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction is the go-to resource for sports medicine and orthopedic surgeons, knee specialists and residents and fellows in these areas. .

Summary: This book is a practically applicable guide to the use of revision total knee arthroplasty. Demand for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) continues to rise, with some estimates predicting this to be as high as 400% than it currently is, and this will inevitably lead to increased demand for revision surgery. Furthermore, this is a sub-specialist area of arthroplasty that is complex and challenging with high failure rates, meaning that there is a real need to improve the outcomes of these procedures. Within this book, the chapters focus on a particular subject area focusing on how to successfully perform a procedure in a step-by-step manner in a variety of scenarios from condylar revisions to salvage cases. Topics covered include how to use surgical techniques in instances of periprosthetic distal femur fractures and manage infections where bone loss has been significant. Long-term outcome data is also presented to enable the reader to develop a deep understanding of where a particular strategy might be most effective. Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Practical Guide concisely details how to use the techniques covered in all aspects of revision knee surgery, making it an indispensable resource for all those involved in the care of these patients or who use these techniques in their day-to-day clinical practice.

Summary: This book provides an up-to-date overview of shelf acetabuloplasty, a traditional procedure for acetabular dysplasia. Originally, shelf acetabuloplasty was mainly intended for the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children and adolescents. However, secondary osteoarthritis of the hip due to DDH is more common than primary osteoarthritis, and shelf acetabuloplasty was subsequently applied to such cases in adults. Recently, periacetabular pelvic osteotomies, such as the rotational acetabular osteotomy have established themselves and are broadly indicated as joint-preserving operations for secondary hip osteoarthritis. With the increased interest in pelvic osteotomies, the role of shelf acetabuloplasty as a reliable and safe procedure now needs to be redefined. Each chapter was prepared by an expert in his or her field. The authors highlight the essence of the indication, discuss advanced and cutting-edge techniques, and assess the outcomes of shelf acetabuloplasty. Taken together, they provide a valuable contribution to hip surgery.

Summary: With the increasing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) across various cancers, the trends for indication at earlier stages, and the use of combination immunotherapy, the frequency of ICI-induced immune-related adverse events (irAE) is expected to grow substantially. Management of these irAE is challenging as it requires not only consideration of the toxicity but also risk-benefit ratios with respect to the primary cancer. Several rheumatic irAE have been reported with ICI therapy including arthritis, myositis, polymyalgia-like syndromes, sicca/Sjogren-like manifestations, and several other less common systemic autoimmune features commonly associated with connective tissue disease. This handbook provides clinicians with a comprehensive overview of the management of rheumatic irAE that develop from cancer immunotherapy. It focuses on the irAE seen with ICI, the most frequently used agents in treating cancer. It provides an overview of cancer immunology, immunotoxicity, and immunotherapies such as ICI, cytokine-based therapy, and CART. It examines the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment of a variety of rheumatic immune-related adverse events arising from these therapies. Chapters also cover cancer immunotherapy in patients with preexisting rheumatic diseases such as inflammatory arthritis and other connective tissue disorders. The book helps clinicians to distinguish the current types of cancer immunotherapy and general toxicity patterns, recognize and diagnose rheumatic clinical syndromes, understand the pathogenesis of irAE, and consider risk-benefit ratios when managing patients with rheumatic irAE. Rheumatic Diseases and Syndromes Induced by Cancer Immunotherapy is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals, residents, fellows, graduate students and nurses alike in rheumatology, clinical immunology, oncology, and internal medicine.
