EVENTS COMMEMORATING LANE'S 100TH BIRTHDAY

Inaugural Event: Centennial Open House

open house programAs our official inauguration of Lane's centennial celebration, the open house offered glimpses into the library's past, demonstrations of its present, and hints of its future. Brief remarks from Dean Pizzo and other speakers highlighted what has changed and what hasn't in the last 100 years, as well as what's to come in the next 100. Several exhibits (Bugs and Drugs, Lane's Canes, and Lane Celebrates 100 Years) showcased rare books from Lane's historical collections, artifacts from Lane's medical instruments collection, Levi Cooper Lane's original desk, and other memorabilia. The library's Educational Technology department offered demonstrations of its innovative use of teaching technology to support the medical school curriculum, and gave a glimpse of what's to come in the new library facility planned as part of the Learning and Knowledge Management Center. The festivities also included showings of videotaped recollections of SUMC alumni (including current faculty members Larry Mathers, Fernando Mendoza, and Irv Weissman), a chance to record memories and wishes for Lane's next 100 years, and of course, cake and refreshments.
