At Stanford, Information Literacy is defined by the following competencies. We believe that by graduation a student will be able to:

Acknowledge and articulate knowledge gaps

  • Identify knowledge gaps in the course of regular practice
  • Frame answerable clinical questions
  • Communicate patient questions to colleagues, including fellow clinicians and allied health and information professionals

Navigate their information landscape in real-time

  • Access varied information resources, including people, articles, patient information, personal expertise, etc. to gather relevant information
  • Locate information specific to their patient-centered questions in a variety of multidisciplinary information resource
  • Efficiently and ethically procure information not in their current information landscape

Evaluate information and information resources

  • Determine the suitability of study design to the type of question asked
  • Understand sources of bias in clinical research
  • Independently assess the reliability of the outcome measures
  • Determine the importance of the outcomes by translating them into meaningful summary statistics

Apply information to improving the quality of health of individuals and populations

  • Balance patient factors, best evidence and personal experience/knowledge into clinical decision making
  • Express the relative risks and benefits of outcomes and treatments to patients and colleagues
  • Report on successful application of information to improve patient care
  • Provide patients appropriate information

Evolve their information literacy skills over their career

Provides access to the MEDLINE database, which contains coverage of over 5000 journals and more than 16 million citations for biomedical articles, including, but not limited to, clinical trials, systematic reviews, case reports, and clinical practice guidelines. Three specialized PubMed search features geared towards helping clinicians quickly access clinical studies by question type, systematic reviews, and medical genetics information. Provides critical assessments of systematic reviews compiled from a variety of medical journals. Selects from the biomedical literature original studies and systematic reviews that are immediately clinically relevant and then summarizes these articles in an enhanced abstract with expert commentary. Features systematic reviews that summarize the effects of interventions and makes a determination whether the intervention is efficacious or not. Cochrane reviews are created through a strict process of compiling and analyzing data from multiple randomized control trials to ensure comprehensiveness and reliability. Present evidence guidlines that focus on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of frequent medical conditions. Lane provides access to over 5,000 ebooks many of which provide helpfull background material that will prepare you to better tackle primary literature. Features topic reviews that include a synthesis of the biomedical literature and specific patient care recommendations. Provides reviews of treatments for over 250 conditions that summarize the related available evidence from systematic reviews, clinical trials, observational studies and clinical practice guidelines. PIER (Physicians' Information and Education Resource) is a Web-based decision-support tool designed for rapid point-of-care delivery of up-to-date, evidence-based guidance for primary care physicians. Connects users to evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents, with summarized abstracts and full-text links when available.
